Eurostars passing Stratford Int'l at Speed!
5 clips of Eurostar trains passing Stratford International at many different times during the day on the 19th February 2011.
It was wet & miserable all day, so there is some pretty good pantograph spray action on some of them!

I love that WooWooWoo sound Eurostar makes when it passes at high speed. I literally play that sound in my head when I run in a race. lol
Just for fun I thought I'd try and work out what speed one of them was traveling at! :) 1.It took about 6 seconds for the whole train to go past the camera point (1:41-1:47) 2.A Eurostar train is 395 metres long. 3.There are 1609 metres in a mile, which is 4 Eurostar train lengths long 4.The train needs to travel four times it's own length to cover a mile, taking 24 seconds. 5.There are 3600 seconds in an hour, and 24 into 3600 is 150. 6.Which means the train was traveling at roughly 150mph.

i used more accurate measurements 1. the train is 394 meters long 2. this means there are 4.08463360837 Eurostars in a mile 3. using my stopwatch the time it took between the front of the train touching the right of the video and the rear of the train leaving the Left of the video was 7.34 Seconds 4. 7.34 x 4.08463360837 = 29.9812106854 5. 3600/29.9812106854 = 120mph

woah you people have some knowledge
Love the way it comes up over the hill before the station!👌
Love the sparks from the pantograph!
I love that sound, when train passes you on full speed
Love the gradient in and out of the station!!! :)
A lot of classic "woo-woo"ing there from the Eurostars. They should name one after Deepak Chopra
It's actually quite difficult to get real idea of just how fast these trains are going by eye alone. For example there is a great deal of camera foreshortening. The Eurostar trains are very long by passenger train standards, the gradients, also appear more extreme than in reality. Both of these factors fool the eye into making the train appear slower than it's really going. In fact, the speeds on the West Coast Mainline while limited to 125 mph (for now) often appear as fast or faster. But this is an illusion. The WCML is an older railway, upgraded, While this is a custom built new line, with a much larger "loading gauge" (built for larger trains) with greater spacing between the tracks (not rails). And far less familiar line-side features that our eyes (and brains)rely on to judge speed, size and distance.

When you go from Carlisle to Edinburgh on the WCMLyou'd be lucky to get 125mph, the top speed of the Transpenine Express Desiro 350/1 are 110mph though it feels a lot faster! Sorry about my tone I am quite envious.

using simple equations such as v = d/t you can easily work out the speed.
Haha. I thought that the pantographs were smoking where the trains are using so much power to go at that speed. :D I never knew that they would 'steam' like that when wet..... they must get hot! I was once waiting at Stratford Int'l aboard a Hitachi Javelin (HS1) and a eurostar whizzed past. Even inside the trains with the doors closed, you could hear the approaching train through the overhead wires and then.... _WHOOOOOOOSH!!!!_ It zipped past! Once we departed from Stratford int'l and onto Ebbsfleet Int'l the driver accellerated the train a bit more faster than it was going from St. Pancras Int'l to Stratford, and before we arrived at Ebbsfleet, another eurostar zipped right past us in the opposite direction. The whole eurostar train..... _SHOOOOOMPH!_ in what appeared to be less than two seconds zipped past us in the opposite direction back to St. Pancras Int'l. Quite shocking, as I wasn't expecting it, and I was looking out of _that_ side of the train as it shot past! :-O A rather memorable day. :D Electric Choo-Choos for the win. LMAO! :D Thanx for showing, -BoomBoxDeluxe. _20th May 2015, 00.25_
I LOVED IT THIS BEST EVER! I don't like a new one against anymore. This one is best, god bless for this Eurostar train.
At least Eurostars will always live forever... on youtube! Bless them.
Awesome, i love the noise they make as they pass, very distinctive :)
Nice vid, like the sparky pantographs on the dark shots, liked!
Excellent video. A great locoation this!
The speed is limited to 230 km/h on the HS1 section closest to London - the same section that opened in 2007. On the other part of HS1, closest to the tunnel, the Eurostars can reach 300 km/h. The 230 km/h limit means that the Javelins (Class 395) are not slowing things down, since they can operate at 225 km/h.
@Cloudrak

You know the Javelins operate at the section after Ebbsfleet that is 300km/h right?
@gfgfgf466
5 жыл бұрын
The 230km/h limit between St Pancras and Ebbsfleet is more to do with volume of trains on that section and also as most of it is in tunnels that weren't designed for 300km/h running.
Rode it first class two years ago... loved it!
Epic video, im in loving for this train Fantastic !!
@rachaelmatt ahh ok, lol, we we're about 3 or 4 coaches from the front. :) Great vdieo by the way, love the noise it makes, with the wind, when it is going high speed.
Great video! It's great to travel them too, I did 2 weeks ago
Quite a spray off the 'pantographs'.

another great video by rachaelmatt :)
Zooming the view out on approach and in after it passes kills the sensation of speed that you want to highlight. Very few amateur or professional video operators understand this.
They're a good bit faster than your 43 passes. Nice vids. Cheers!
MAN Those were heck of fast
Well done on the camera movement
Nice video
That track is so steep leading up to and after the station!
Spectaculaire et impressionant !!
awesome ;P
The line speed here is 230 kph or 143 mph. It goes up to the full 300 kph at Southfleet Junction past Ebbsfleet. The Javelin trains are permitted 225 kph maximum not 230.
It comes out at dagenham the nearest station is dagenham dock on the c2c line
I am making a video where I make a mix of 'Eurostar, Europop' would it be OK if I use your video for B-roll?

funnily enough in australia we actually do have the "HST" as it was known, or the Intercity 125. Its the XPT trains that run up and down the east coast. The HST's were bought and had some things such as air conditioners added but are basically the same train. However our tracks are terrible so theyre more realistically Intercity 80's or lower lol. Distances that a proper HST could cover in 2-3 hours in the UK take 6 or more in australia. Also i guess stopping at every minor town along the way slows it a bit too, as does sharing the line with freight
Oh my the euro star at speed is amazing

hey! nice vid there! how come Stratford int'l doesn't let you use tripods for filming?
Done on purpose to help trains slow down and speed up more quickly when stopping at the station.

Probably, the best way to visit Stratford.
These used to run as GNER for the east coast mainline In 2004
Is it only the line that heads towards the other countries that has a 140mph limit, because on the Railworks Train Simulator, the line heading towards St Pancras International only has a line speed of 50mph (I think).

venn it's nowhere near like that in reality. I use the sation once/twice a week and there is a rise and dip in/out of the station as most of the line is in a tunnel in central london but the camera does exaggerate the gradient a lot.

it looks kind of cool the way it dips down into the tunnel though.
i probably was on one of them :) what where the times? can you remember. I got the 10:25 from St pancras to Paris
My guess is that's not at top speed (300kph) but more like 200kph in dense areas. They wait until they're out in the countryside to go max speed.
I have travelled to Germany a few times on these wonderful trains, and although I look out of the window, I have never seen Stratford International Station. How far in time distance is it from St. Pancras? Would like to know so I can see the station as we pass it at speed. Absolutely great U-tube clip!!!

one way only?
Not sure how many are at the continental depots. I've heard 80'ish before though.
Based on my standard rule for standard length coaches, Train speed = (coaches passing per second) x 100 km/h The train seems to already be at its full speed of 300km/h less than 10 minutes out of St Pancras.

Did he really stay at the station till night time just to record this?.... O_o
They passed pretty quick,afraid to let the passengers of incase they got mugged.
The maximum permitted speed between St Pancras and Ebbsfleet is 225kph or 140mph.
Play this on 2x
They don't stop at this station, too many bloody wankers hanging around.
about 143 mph/230 km/h is the speed, I've calculated it.
once the train leaves st pancras is it one long tunnel until stratford? and once it leaves stratford when does it next come out the tunnel?
@juliuss2056

From St Pancreas to Stratford is one tunnel and then there is another tunnel from stratford to East London and then there is another shorter tunnel under the Thames to Ebbsfleet station.

See comments above.
eurostar's e300 from 2018.
According to my rule however, the 3rd train is rather slow (only about 250 km/h). Does anybody know how far in the tunnel between St Pancras and Stratford does the eurostar reach full 300 km/h under normal conditions?
@petert2909
9 жыл бұрын
The trains usually would be at full line speed by the time they are at this point on the line, however the trains are provided with in train signalling that sets a safe speed for them to drive at according to where other trains are ahead of them on the line, so the third train may have been following slightly closer to a preceding train than the others so was running at a slightly slower speed in order to maintain the safe distance.
@daveb0789

Webeo The maximum speed as far as Southfleet Junction (thats after Ebbsfleet International) is 230 kph (143 mph) which the trains easily reach before Stratford. It is only after Southfleet Junction they can accelerate to 300 kph and thats reached on the descent through the North Downs tunnel in Kent.

I find the zooming technique for approaching and departing trains eliminates the sense of speed that these trains are actually doing. I have noticed this in other videos by other photographers.
ugh, the zooming is annoying... just shot from a normal angle of view (50mm on FF).

I live in Australia. It’s a national disgrace that we haven’t high speed rail between the 3 biggest cities . It comes up every few years & is binned . Meanwhile Melbourne & Sydney & to a lesser extent Brisbane become unliveable. The current Parliament is full of career politicians who have no imagination & only look at the next election . Victoria currently has a government that at last is doing something about public transport, but the money comes from the Federal Government who just aren’t interested in progress. We have stood still as a country since 1996 .
Pantograph spark
That's the problem with the USA; it needs to modernise and become more green as opposed to relying on flying to go long distance. The problem is the attitude towards state funded operations which the US hates so much, except for its arms industry.
