There was also a MATTEL version in the UK before Nintendo revoked the rights and redistributed it themselves.

In the 80s, Nintendo didn't have an office in Europe, so they relied on local companies to release their games and hardware. NES was released on September 1 1986 in Scandinavia (Sweden, Norway and Denmark) and some other European countries. Then it was released in 1987 in the other "half of Europe, distributed by different companies. This is probably why there are so many different European versions of it. NoE was established in 1990, so they were around when the SNES came out.

Sweden still has its own company, Bergsala, who exclusively manages distribution of Nintendo's products in the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland Norway and Sweden). The rest of Europe is handled by NoE. Also, while Sweden was among the first to receive the NES on September 1 1986 (since Bergsala has always been based in Sweden), the other Nordic countries didn't get it until the year after.

Great video. Mine is a Japanese Family Computer NTSC version and don't have a composite AV out. The only way to connect it to TV is via RF channel 95. The game cartridge is also smaller than the NES.

Yes, from what I've read the RGB output on the French NES has to do with them using SECAM rather than PAL. Apparently similar adaptations has been done to other video game consoles there.

You got the NES Hong Kong version, it actually says Hong Kong on the front lid. The machine looks the same, but the black areas on the machine are grey and the cartridges are light grey, they have exact same shape as the us/europe version. A UK seller on ebay actually has two of those machines in stock. You also got the Mattel version of the NES, it says Mattel on the front lid.

Tio tienes la misma consola que mi La NES version española. Lol so I moved to America and I got the European charger for the nes the 220volts or something like that and it doesn't fit in the American plug so I bought an adaptor. But the thing is I think because in America the output for your wall charger is 110volts? Idk but I know it's less. My nes won't turn on. Do you have a fix for this other than buying a complete other new adaptor?

Never knew about the NES-004E or sneaky two versions of PAL, interesting stuff! ...also I deservedly feel like an idiot for completely forgetting about the AV plugs (in my defence I've never used them on the NES!); would've probably saved me some headache hooking it up to my HDTV the other day via RF. Took a while to get the channels sorted and screen to stop shaking but whatever, got it working fine in the end haha.

I wasn't either sure first time a saw the french nes if it used the same multi out cable as snes and N64, but sadly it doesn't. I have an SCN nes, so since it has same power plug size as the NA nes will the scn power cable work on an NA nes?

I have a boxed French NES (Duck Hunt set) I bought off eBay a while ago. I have not used it much as I only have the Duck Hunt/SMB1 double cart for it. I would imagine the special AV cable is quite difficult to find by itself; as far as I know the output is exclusive to the French model. I need to disable the lockout chip on it to be able to play my UK carts on it. I also have a UK ("Mattel") NES with the standard RF out, unfortunately there is a fault with it which makes playing difficult!

***** I remember reading recently that it wasn't RGB, just a composite signal via a SCART cable. Seems I got it rather wrong in the above comment. I rather hate Nintendo, admittedly the NES being composite only was a step above its predecessors, but Sega went all out on each of their consoles.

+johneygd French TVs don't lack a composite input but they use the SECAM colour system, so instead of creating an entire new board revision with complex circuitry to output a SECAM system they simply replaced the RF modulator with a PAL to RGB separator, since virtually all European TVs have a Scart RGB input that was the easiest solution for Nintendo.
