European bison (Bison bonasus) yesterday and today

We currently have over 2,000 European bisons (Bison bonasus) in six free populations all over Poland. After the First World War, not a single wild European bison remained in the country. So how have these beautiful and majestic animals returned to us, and in such numbers? It is a long and very interesting story.

I had no idea bison even existed in Europe until fairly recently. I thought bison were a species exclusively endemic to here in America. I remember hearing stories passed down from my ancestors (Polish & German) about storks, cuckoos, bears, wolves, elk and even “blue” frogs but none about bison. I suppose it’s because they were already scarce when my great grandparents immigrated to America in the early-to-mid 1800s. Populations then already limited to one northern primeval forest and the Caucasus Mountains in the south. Fascinating & well done documentary!

I know they do breed bison with cattle here in America for their large meat yield. Those animals are called “beefalo.” Bison meat is supposedly healthier as it has much less fat than regular beef although I have personally never tried it.

Scary that the European Bison very nearly suffered the same fate as their American cousins, extinction due to overhunting and mismanagement. Other countries need to take note of the European model and create programs devoted to increasing populations of their declining and nearly extinct animal species.

What an excellent documentary, with multiple perspectives. Historically humans saw these magnificent creatures as only good for sport (a mental sickness in my humble opinion). But also fascinating to note that the Russians and Germans were willing to protect the precious bison population in WWII, in spite of being on opposing sides. The European bison seems to be an emblem of the best of human attempts to live in harmony with and encourage nature. It was so interesting to understand all that is involved in conservation and protection of this species (including having to cull them sometimes). Also significant are the preventative efforts like keeping a gene or sperm bank in case of natural catastrophe. I again congratulate all those people in Poland who support and share their skills and knowledge in a whole range of disciplines, in order to safeguard the bison and in doing so strive for a balance between natural and human needs that is to the benefit of all.

The largest number of European bison is found in the Białowieża Forest, close to the border with Belarus, and a large herd is also found in the Bieszczady Mountains, near the border with Ukraine. European bison do not migrate long distances in Poland, because there are usually vast built-up areas outside of forests. Animals stick to large and dense forest areas.

But there's a lot of other smaller population of few dozen bison in other countries. Some were reintroduced in western Europe, the latest one is a small group in UK, less than 10 individuals for now.

What the European bison needs to survive is good back breeding program with the use of American bison genetics like from Yellowstone and elk island national park now despite what was said in the early ear part of this documentary about the differences between the European and American bison populations they are essentially the same species when they have been crossed two together both male and female offspring are fertile and therefore this is something they should do on very small selective scale to prevent genetic erosion and to strengthen immunity against diseases that could cause species demise and believe it or not there was a program by the heck brothers to do just that although yes they were nazis and they promoting a horrible cause but there efforts to save the species was on the right track and after the war the polish government even admitted that destroying the program that the heck brothers put together was a big mistake on their part and set back preservation of the species for decades that is why we need to re implement this program right away to ensure and prevent the extinction of this beautiful and majestic animal

Well I have counter comment if both European bison and American bison can breed together and have offspring that are 100% fertile and I mean both bulls and cows then they are same species despite their 13k years of genetic drift and if one little infection can wipe out in entire herd because of lack immunity due to lack of genetic diversity because of inbreeding and let’s face it the hole population of European bison that we have today only came from 12 individuals then that means they lack the genetic diversity needed to survive as a species and yes the back breeding program that Hans and lutz heck put together would have prevented so many of the diseases due to the lack of genetic diversity they have and to also note Hans and lutz heck proved that after only 5 generations of back breeding the were physically European bison and this has been documented in black and white and matter fact many people I have talked to from Poland say that if eu was not in the way they would buy a bunch American bison from Yellowstone and elk island and just let run free and breed with the local European bison population to salve the inbreeding problem

We are already in the state that you can meet them even in cities, every week in the spring a human attacked by the bear. Conservationists dont want to hear about controled population, so we will probably have to wait until people take responsibility. It seems that society cant act reasonable, we need to find every extrem.
