For thousands of generations, buffalo (species bison bison) have evolved alongside Indigenous people who relied on them for food and shelter, and, in exchange for killing them, revered the animal. The stories of Native people anchor the series, including the Kiowa, Comanche, and Cheyenne of the Southern Plains; the Lakota, Salish, Kootenai, Mandan-Hidatsa, and Blackfeet from the Northern Plains; and others.
Numbering an estimated 30 million in the early 1800s, the herds began declining for a variety of reasons, including the lucrative buffalo robe trade, the steady westward settlement of an expanding United States, diseases introduced by domestic cattle, and drought. But the arrival of the railroads in the early 1870s, and a new demand for buffalo hides to be used in the belts driving industrial machines back East, brought thousands of hide hunters to the Great Plains. In just over a decade the number of bison collapsed from 12-15 million to fewer than a thousand, representing one of the most dramatic examples of our ability to destroy the natural world. By 1900, the American buffalo teetered on the brink of disappearing forever, and Native people of the Plains entered one of the most traumatic moments of their existence.

Anything by Ken Burns and PBS is exceptional. I read Steve Rinella’s excellent book about bison a couple years ago - glad to see he is part of this production, too.

Ken Burns = extraordinary storytelling
Years ago, the family went to Yellowstone, and we had Pow Wow music playing on the CD player (Awesome Drumming and singing) The Buffalo were on the side of the road and we slowed down to a crawl, and they began to whistle and sing to the music! It was magical. I will never forget that experience. We were in a mobile home at the time. It was Lacota music.

They are magnificent animals! Pound for pound, Bison is the strongest animal on earth. Some would say an Elephant is stronger, but if you increased the size of a bison to that of an Elephant - there's no contest. A cow will stand in 4 inches of snow and starve to death. A Bison in 4 feet of snow will swing its enormous head side to side down to the ground and feed. Take a step forward and repeat.

I drive through every couple of weeks. I love it when they are right at the side of the road.
Though the terms are often used interchangeably, buffalo and bison are distinct animals. Old World “true” buffalo (Cape buffalo and water buffalo) are native to Africa and Asia. Bison are found in North America and Europe. Both bison and buffalo are in the Bovidae family, but the two are not closely related.
Excellent series! It makes me sad to see the parallels between the 1870s and 1880s wholesale destruction of the American Bison and today's use of oil and gas and oir consumption of plastics. We don't seem to have learned that resources are finite and that the scale of human consumption is incredibly destructive to all life. Every day I buy some product that comes in plastic, containers that could be re-used many, many times, yet they all go into landfills. Recycling is a scam until someone figures out how to process plastics back into oil. Let's all do better.

It's a bison, not a buffalo.
Perhaps the National Mammal and National Bison Day, 4 Nov. 2023 should be renamed by replacing Bison with Buffalo. And the Canadian Bison is a mythical creature. The word Buffalo is used for marketing purposes. Buffalo Bill Cody was a great salesman

Your text is the first mention of Canada in the video or comments. As a Canadian it’s always fun to watch Ken Burns , his films always stop at the 49 parallel. Of course our history is quite different than the Merican history.
What a great program do you think Desantis will show this in florida.... I can understand the embarrassment what these people did across in the united states...
The destruction of the American Buffalo is the saddest legacy of America. So sad that the slaughter of the Buffalo happened.
The BISON are beautiful! No such thing as “Buffalo” in North America.

You can say there are no such thing as "Indians" in North America either, but you're just arguing semantics and disputing folk language. Words are misused all the time, like when people say "I love you" or governments say "the truth is."

Wrong. Buffalo is a "common name" for this animal in the united states and you can find many such examples all over the world, where animals have a scientific name as well as a common name that is used by certain groups of people. In this case the word Buffalo was the animal's common name long before the word Bison, and it also has a huge historical significance in the American West, as is evident by names such as Buffalo Soldiers, Buffalo Bill, Buffalo Nickels, etc. There are hundreds of places across the country that include the name Buffalo in their name, and the first official national river in the US is also the Buffalo National River. So definitely not wrong to call this animal a Buffalo.

They are Bison, why do Americans call them Buffalos. Buffalos are a different thing and look different.

Because 5he European colonizers came looking for a route to Asia. Are there "Indians" on the American continents??? Nope, but there are "American Indians" and "American Buffalo" in the mind of the white man.
You must mean bison. No Buffalo in North America except in zoos.

They're not bison either. Buffalo and Bison are words, symbolic representations that humans use to describe and categorize. What they are is beyond words.
