I find myself nostalgic for the days of Euro NCAP's old 40mph off set crash test. There was an undeniable precision in evaluating a vehicle's structural integrity that seems to be missing from the current approach. Let me illustrate this with the example of a 2.5 tonne van colliding with their moving 1.4 tonne barrier. In this scenario, the van appears robust, handling the impact admirably and retaining its aesthetic appeal. Now, contrast that with the older test, where the same van would face a solid structure. Suddenly, the entire 2.5 tonnes of the van would be subjected to intense stress, offering a more comprehensive examination of its true structural capabilities. While I acknowledge the shift to a moving barrier has its merits, I can't help but wonder if the old testing methodology could have been enhanced. One consideration is integrating more sensors into the solid barrier, allowing for a nuanced analysis of compatibility between different vehicle types. This approach might provide valuable insights into how vehicles interact in real world scenarios, capturing a broader spectrum of safety considerations. I do recognise that for lighter vehicles, the current crash testing methodology holds its own advantages. The emphasis on testing the weakest points is a logical approach, particularly when the disparity in mass between the tested car and the moving barrier highlights potential vulnerabilities. It's all about striking the right balance between realism and precision in safety assessments.

What I really, REALLY miss is more focus of EuroNCAP on compatibility. Why do heavy cars get crash-tested at the same speed as lighter vehicles?
