Now imagine a century. Or at least the time past since Dr. Mohandas Gandhi made his speech at the Montessori Training College, London. Making "Scientific Pedagogy" a political issue, for European Resiliency. In my perspective, at least since "Antropologia Pedagogica" (1904-1911). kzread.info/dash/bejne/iX6MuMOfk5C9mto.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/nW2crbprmNLeZps.html

Nationalism is the love of ones country and the desire to serve it (methods very based on ones personal values) what he is describing is in fact Jingoism, the hate of others for the betterment of your own.

+Da Techpriest but isn't there an inherent and neccesary Other in this idea of Nation? Were nations not forged by war and subjugation? Was nationalism not spurred on by forced conscription? Shall we not understand Nationalism in this historical context? - can we deny the darker aspect of this concept?

While I would accept that nationalism requires that one put the interests of ones own people ahead of those of other nations domestically I would hesitate to extend that beyond the nations boarders. Nationalism is like any other ideological movement. Harnessed properly and restrained it can lead a nations people to do great things and accomplish things they would otherwise be incapable of. Unhinged and brought to the extreme it breads Jingoism and ultra collectivist attitudes that can be used to justify any number of injustices. The same can be said of other political ideologies such as progressivism and socialism or even populism of that matter.

+facetubemyassplug There will always be an 'other', academically. In the real world there are your people, friends, allies, foreigners and enemies. It will always be so.

***** Anything "harnessed properly and restrained" can accomplished "great things", so with nationalism: of course. But I don't think we should ignore the abstractness of the concept of a Nation; I don't think those qualities you describe are inherently to (or strictly belonging to) nationalism, just in the same way as I believe that all progress (wealth generation and technological advancement) that occurs in a capitalist system is inherent to this system. Instead I see a warlike entity in the Nation state. Do you know how much terrorism and general violence is justified in some sort of nationalism? I think we should re-examine this idea, this concept, and explore and acknowledge the darker aspects of nationalism, unless we delude ourselves in thinking it is a given, unalterable thing.

9:10 Barroso's argument is cowardly. It comes from fear of other countries and lack of belief in European nations own ability. We have all traded with the big USA superpower and had influence so what does he think stops us from having a similar relationship with China or India and the rest?

With Merkel allowing approximately 1m extra people in, it will change the face of Europe forever. If we don't get out this time, we may never get another chance. It worries me that we will be forced to have the Euro and further integration. Then there is the question of our monarchy. I think with further integration, we will lose our monarchy and that's something I don't want to happen.

I'm 6 months late, but: 1. there are 7 monarchies in the EU, the loss of your monarchy is a concern you might have (and rightfully so) but not in any way based on actual facts. 2. How exactly is "1m extra people" going to "change the face of Europe forever"? Europe has 500/750 million inhabitants.

He spends the first half talking about how UK participation in the EU benefits the EU. That's exactly the problem. Our participation benefits the EU but not the UK. It benefits the smaller countries which receive money from the richer countries like us
