The story is better than the actual game. Not that it's bad, but very repetitive. VERY. I beat it once twenty years ago, and then just now. I've no idea which playthrough back then, so I'm going to watch the cut scenes. There's no way I could make it through 3 times.

One of the greatest achievements in the history of gaming.

I regret entirely this moment to have sold this game in Gamestop in 2005 for the Xbox console....i was once a fool...

It's interesting how Mantorak was winning in part by deceptively appearing to be losing the whole time. He had control of the "board" in ways that the other gods couldn't understand or counter.

I dont think it needed a sequel, but it is criminal it was never remastered or at least re-released, the Wii, the Wii U, and the Switch can all run Gamecube games, all Nintendo has to do is put it on the e-shop.

It's not just a survival horror game. It's a survival horror and maintain your sanity game

Superb voice acting for it's time. This game is what made me start appreciate voice acting and is one of my favorite qualities of it.

One of the best aspects of the game is that it has such professional voice acting and movie scripts. Many of the movies are actually engine-drawn animations, but just take a look at, for example, the part starting from 56:31, such high quality voice acting and animation, without a modern engine! A master piece indeed.

Silicon Knights, I miss you guys. Made the legacy of kain series, made this...if only you were here. :

Silicon Knights also had a great intro to another of their games. A small game called Legacy Of Kain. ;)

the character of pious augustus is set up great - his dialogue even before he became corrupted fits even though its just a few lines super memorable also that its one of the few games where you play as the villain first

Gentlemen, This needs a remake. Or the sequel (that was in for a pledge at Kickstarter) should be made. It is a piece of art.

sadly the company behind this masterpiece went bankrupt its a real shame too, they had a real solid game here, they just couldnt market it well enough ;-;

Such an underrated game. Ow man, when it was like 1:00A.M and the screen flashed "blue screen of death" I was like O.O.

Lovecraft inspired this great game! The best in Game Cube.

Best game ever published by Nintendo. I am surprised they had the balls to publish this game.

The Gamecube might be the best console they ever made, it was the first time they had to "fight back" after the PS1 destroyed the N64...sadly, all these gems (Eternal Darkness, Resident Evil REmake and 4, Twin Snakes, Viewtiful Joe, etc) sold like crap, because Nintendo fans only buy Mario and Pokemon, so after the failure of the Gamecube, they just said "fuck it", and focused on the casual market since then.

A shame that 12 years later, I still know every line in this game

I wonder if Chandra really did love Karim. Because though she cheated on him in life, she is still by Karim's side when Roberto meets them in 1460 AD

If we can't have a remake or a sequel, can we at least get an HD remaster port of this game on the Switch? It would sell like hot cakes.

It wouldnt, it sold poorly when it came out (less than 500.000 copies). But just putting this up on the e-shop would cost Nintendo no money, while they would still make some money back.

Game was made in 2001, so it was more than likely on purpose.

I never noticed this before but... At the beginning, when Alex wakes up after seeing her grandfather's spirit, the clock reads "3:33."

Check the DNA and assume its him til you get the results. Don't call her at 3am to get her on a plane so she can see the remnants of her loved one.

I loved that game back on the old Gamecube. I heard that a sequel, called Sanity's Redemption, was planned but never got started. They alluded to it at the end, to leave it open for a sequel. It would be great to see one made with modern graphics & game mechanics, yet all the suspense, madness, hallucinations, & twists of this first one.

I never noticed that Pious uses Mantorok Magick to bind him and the random guard uses it too to repair Ellia's sword Those guys were Mantorok worshippers

love the fact that the Roman Legionaries look to be ethnically diverse like IRL then just as white guys like in most games.

Loved the final ending. Had hoped we'd see the next one with the purple and yellow ancients. It would be amazing to play a sequel.

Anyone else who thinks that Alex Roivas is hot? :3

I've been trying to remember the name of this game for years and only went on flashes for memory and it was the glowing spell letters, the vision of the characters transitioning like water and then the sculpture heads turning that confirmed this was the game I was looking for

One of the best GameCube games hands down.

Thank you for this. Never had the time to actually complete the game.

I remember being so impressed by the graphics and how the lip-movements matched the dialog back in the day. Hard to believe this came out 16 years ago. I've gotta dig my copy out of storage and replay it one of these days.

"To think that once I could not see beyond the veil of reality, to see those who dwell behind. I was once a fool." Such a great ending line. Ominous yet almost comforting that Alex now has the realization there is much more out there. Also I've always felt that her finals lines relate to the person playing the game as well.

If you beat game several times, ending line changes along other things.

In the beginning, am I the only one that noticed alex somehow caught her first flight to the crime scene like instantly? How did she catch a flight and they were still there working on the crime scene? She must have had a fast plane!

rich925cal1 the inspector legrass character is Pious Agustus, he wanted to show Alex the gruesome scene in hopes it would deter her from ever setting foot in the mansion instead it just sparked her motivation when the crime went unsolved.

@@RJAnime The wiki for the game states, "It was intended that Legrasse would actually be a Bonethief, and that Alex Roivas would fight him in a boss fight, although the boss fight ended up cut."

Classic. Silicon Knights made some seriously deep games in those days. Pious is one of the greatest antagonists in gaming history.

This is one of those games I've never played but have vague memories about since I watched my brother play it.

What’s crazy about Edward’s body being found is that the next of kin doesn’t even live close enough to drive to the crime scene. Yet they just leave the body where they found it instead of taking it to the morgue, lol.

This game was the one time Nintendo slammed the table and say "we can make mature games for adult audiences", you can see it in the high production values, excellent script, smart combat system, complex game mechanics, and professional voice acting...sadly, this game sold poorly, and Nintendo would only focus on the casual market, and appeal to Mario and Pokemon fans after the failure of the Gamecube. Still, besides this being one of the best games ever made, its also a piece of history, showing Nintendo once tried to be more than just...well, "Nintendo". Probably the reason why they refuse to at least port it to newer consoles.

I like how in the opening the main character gets a phone call saying that there has been an accident with her grandfather, she has to FLY there, and when she gets there no time has passed since the phone call. The ambulance is still there etc.

They need to remake this fucking game.

I remember as a kid I was waiting for this game when it was in production for the N64. It got delayed so long that it was released to the gamecube. But boy it did not disappoint. This was one of my favorite games ever as a kid.

If there is one game that should be remastered, NOT redone, it is this one.

Not a problem. Its always easy to play through great games like this one.

Everything about this game was well developed and written. The dialogue, the atmosphere, the creature designs, and soundtrack are great. It's a shame Nintendo doesn't plan on releasing a sequel to this masterpiece or least a proper remake like Resident Evil received in 2002.

Nintendo owns the rights to the title and recently applied for an extension on the trademark, which I don't think they would bother to do unless they were at least considering doing something with it. The extension was granted, but they will lose it after 36 months if they don't actually use it. So we could quite likely be seeing it on Virtual Console, as a remake or even a sequel (my guess is VC or remake first, as they would want to reintroduce the title to gamers before a sequel might be made).

I happened upon this game on chance. I was terrible at it but the whole thing felt like a movie. Sure, NOW it seems a little choppy but at the time I felt chills from the first cutscene. This game deserves to be noticed. Such a shame it fell under the radar of many of a gamer. A masterpiece of a game. The voice acting was great. The story was great. What grabbed me was the dialogue between Alex and the detective and how good the voice acting was. Then meeting Mantarok for the first time. Pius was a badass.

Make a mini series based on this. Ratings 90% positive.

This is a game I'd buy a VR system for. I want to see those insanity effects in first person.

Yeah, problem is, that could mean literally anything, Nintendo could just be releasing ED on Virtual Console. So while I would really like to believe that they are working on a sequel, there's no way of telling until they announce it.

Samus Aran So if you believe Kotaku and its anonymous advisor, can you please explain why a game that he was apparently hemorrhaging money for would not have been good? I mean if he spent all of his time and money for other games on this one, don't you think the ART DIRECTOR would have done a good job? Oh whats that? Yes, he specifically stated he is just the Art Director and, as someone who is in the Game Art business myself, knows that an Art Director has no say over the money given towards the game or anything outside how the game looks. He was basically a supervisor that made sure people did their jobs or something looked good. Honestly, I wish I was on their team just so I could tell them to lie that they fired Denis so people would actually have supported them instead of being like the people who gave a guy 10k when all he asked for was $10 for potato salad. (Not saying you did that, just stating people will spend money on something stupid when something that could have been amazing was given up on). Why lie? Cause I'd rather the people who made the original game make its successor. Oh and just so you know, Nintendo was going to let them make the game. Why do you think the first console they said it was going to be released on other than pc was Wii U? Anyway, rant over.... Yeah, I hope Nintendo does something with it. I just hope if the remake it themselves the new team they hire to do it does something good. After all, sequels made by new teams are notorious for being horrible (looking at you Silent Hill)

Link Rocks Almost zero chance of a sequel being outright horrible as long as Nintendo is overseeing the production. They get very 'hands on' if they don't like what they see, just ask the makers of Metroid Prime (itself an excellent sequel to a game made by another team, as was Retro's similarly excellent Donkey Kong Returns). Capcom made them three great handheld Zelda games as well. That said, if they could involve some of the talent behind the original that would be very welcome.

+Alfonso Alfaro Nintendo owns the rights to the IP and Silicon Knights made a bunch of bone-headed business decisions that bankrupted them. Unfortunately, the likelihood of a follow up or spiritual successor is next to nada.

Basically what hall9111said. Also, the game didn't sell all that well. It sold well enough to be part of the GameCube's Player's Choice lineup but not well enough to justify a sequel or to spawn a franchise.

+iampanax i have played the game and i don't see how any path is easier or better than the other ones. sure, you get the runes in a different order thus making it a bit difficult with Xel cuz you can't heal early in the game, but the combat is really easy to be fair and you get by just fine even without heals. technically you should have shown all three paths in such a video. especially the dialogues between Pious and the Great Ones are interesting.

+s0me1up actually the easiest is chatturgha, because its guardians just cost you energy when they hit you, and some sanity. Xel'lotath cuts more sanity just by seeing and also if you get hit you lose energy. Ulyaoth is the hardest, because its guardians can explode costing you energy, also whey they hit you you also lose magick. so really ulyaoath wasn't the easiet route!! i could say it;s the hardest! xel follows because of the sanity and her paranoid personality or her black guardian and of course what you just said, about the runes. But to me the best is Xel also. she has the best lines and the best twisted paranoid and crazy personality!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pauuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuul. brother luououuououououther hahahahahahaha SHE IS THE BEST!

charmedTheFightConti because Ulyaoth zombies explode they are so easy. you hit one of them once and they explode in a chain-reaction. Xel'lotath mummies can be onehit killed by fire. Chatturgah zombies on the other hand are much tougher and can regenerate limbs. But as i said i played all three routes and i didn't find any of them particularly difficult. they are well balanced.

Oh a proper remake of this game. For as awesome as the story, magick, lore and characters where. The combat was really lacking, not that, that took away any enjoyment back in the days, but looking back... Of course, they where limited at the time. But final boss fight? Use magic weapon to attack from afar, run straight past big scary boss man as his hits are super slow, hit the artefact, repeat until win. Not to mention the spell he casts is sooo bad. "Hah! You missed me because I stepped to the side." Still, a awesome game, the combat took nothing away from it. It just didn't add anything either.

anyone know the best emulator to play this on? im using Dolphin 4.0.2 but the cut scenes are very choppy and some of the gameplay is a bit laggy (especially in the cathedral levels) although the rest of the game plays perfectly
