People supporting the Soviet Union in Estonia should be banished
@GreatRetro

Well, no! Usually they are old people and you can understand them! Soviet Union was their youth and that is exactly what they are nostalgic about! Young people supporting modern day Putinistan is a totally different question! They think that Estonia is a wonderful place but there are too many Estonians... So the struggle will continue.

In countries that allows multi party system, not USA, that generations diferences are directed to vote in different parties. In USA you dont see that common pattern, because if you dont vote in the same 2 main parties, the vote will be wasted, because its a "the winner takes all seats" system.

@Ann-Go To My ChanneI! L!VE NOW Yeah most people don't value the time spent under Soviet rule. Very much so because of how far Estonia has come after the fall of the union, in only 30 years, we have managed to catch up with the digital age and even be on the forefront in some cases. Pretty sure that wouldn't have happened if we hadn't have gone independent.

Sillamäe has a lot going for it. Being 2,5 hour drive from Tallinn and 2,5 hours from Saint-Petersburg. Port, fuel terminal, 14 track Rail station, massive truck stop, warehouseing. This video makes it look like its in a horrible way. Atleast there was jobs in the soviet time, ok.
Although Sillamäe was a closed town, some people still took a risk to go there because the shops had a better choice of goods in such closed towns. The trick was not to get caught. One just needed to act normally. Although it was a closed town, it did not mean that it was surrounded by a fence or there was some gate. My mom did it several times. My aunt told me it was also possible to go there with a local resident. She also said that when she was young, she had a friend who told her about this town and she did not believe her because it was not shown on any of the maps. Crazy thing is that my aunt grew up maybe 60-70km from Sillamäe.
I've been and I really like this town. It's sad that it's a bit run down and it would be good to give it some new life. Part of the problem is that the east of Estonia has an image problem, which is obviously associated with the past. Ethnic Estonians have often told me that there is nothing interesting in places like Narva, Sillamäe etc. but I found it to be fascinating, and when I tell Russian Estonians i've been they are excited to know what I thought and have recommended places to visit next time I go to Ida-Virumaa. It's obviously a tricky subject due to the past, but regardless I think the sooner this divisive mentality is shaken away on both sides, the better.
I needed to see the bridge to realise they were saying Sillamäe🤦♀️🤦♀️
"What would that have meant for the fate of the soviet union?" Well, it couldn't have made it any worse. And I bet Estonia doesn't value its time spent under Russia

@kurmakayev

What communists did to ethnic Russians is 10x worse than what they did to Estonians. It is estimated that between 10 and 30 million Russians died because of communist crimes (this doesn't include WW2 victims). There were plenty of Estonian communists, including nearly all of the government officials of the Estonian Soviet Republic. Each of the 20 to 30 thousand Estonians who died because of communist occupation is a tragedy. But there's sadly no exclusivity to any single ethnic group. It depend on the country rules. In Soviet Union the environment and public health was not considered a priority, like in USA as well. In France nuclear plants are less profitable than in USA... In France nuclear are safe, in USA it creates more troubles to the health of american down 90% citizens, because in USA the profit goal are culturally above public safety. And because in USA the problem are the culture itself of blind profit no matter what, it becomes more safe to the americans citizens to ban nuclear power plants than to ask more safety rules over their industries.

Most Estonian youth are not fleeing. Many spend some years abroad but more often than not end up coming back to Estonia, just because of how much common sense there is here. The population might decrease a bit by 2040, but that is a common high income country problem with reduced birth rates. What you call russophobia I'll call a severe lack of respect towards the native people of Estonia. The local Russians could achieve a lot of success if they would learn the Estonian language. There are free government lessons, but most local Russians don't want to learn. Those who learn have achieved greatness, like the long reigning mayor of Tallinn.
