What's with Germany's fear of speed limits? | Focus on Europe

German car enthusiasts are keen to continue driving at high velocity. But many people, especially in cities, support imposing speed limits to help mitigate climate change.

This documentary makes it look a lot like people who like going fast are tuners - maybe even people that like to do drifts and stuff. I wouldnt say thats the normal case and gives the impression that the people who like to go fast engage in these dangerous activities. Most people that go fast on the Autobahn are owners of middle/upper class cars. If the car, road and the traffic allow for it I don't see any point in a speed limit. I have the feel that many people that rarely use the Autobahn or dont even have a car (many young people in bigger cities) are especially in favor of a general speed limit. Easy for them. A speed limit will never solve the climate issues carbon emissions cause - there would still be emissions just a little less: A speed limit is not a solution for the climate crisis and every sane person would see that this is a hypocrite claim. I think its about something different. Voters especially from the left parties and the greens rather oppose a certain life style that includes going fast on the Autobahn. There is a big risk right now that with the shift of majorities in parliament rights of the people are sacrificed in the name of the environment.

In Berlin they reduced the speed limit from 50 to 30 on main streets which run many Kilometers across the city. You have to have very calm nerves to drive 30 on these streets. You mostly see drivers accelerating and doing maneuvers to get to the other side, i don't see how this decision is safer or more climate friendly. But as many things in Germany, it doesn't have to make sense, you just do it because some 5th level official decided you should.

I have nothing against speed on motorways... Motorways are designed for it, made to withstand it. But town area is completely different. You have people living in it. Not many are interested in your noisy engine, at least those over 30. While I understand that some areas are good to have greater speed, I do believe we should leave this decision for experts. Many roads are so heavy with traffic that some of them don't feel like it is a human space!

Plus, if they want to solve the environmental issue, they should care more about the bulk of it, which involves terrible industrial practices all over the world, unnecessary multiple across the world crossing of materials and manufactured goods, companies requiring people to work "in person" instead of remotely. You save much more if you allow everybody (that can) to work from home, even if they were to take public transportation. Oh, and funny enough, when we complained about full buses and trains, they said they didn't have more capacity. Now that there's less people moving around, they want to reduce frequency and force people to commute again to stay profitable. They always change the narrative according to "their" interest, not the population's. Then they brainwash people into believing whatever they want and, sadly, it seems to work in part of the population. If they wanted cars to be safer they could force the industry to install AI solutions in cars and roads to prevent accidents (you know, fixing steering, stopping cars, etc). But that does not serve the interest of the ones that fund media and politicians in power. Therefore, they just tax us more and limit our freedom even further. They say people don't want real estate to go down in price because many families would have their houses as their main assets. But, if it's a family's asset, they're usually living there already and it does not matter if their house is worth 100 or a million, as they're not selling it. Why don't they put what's important into vote? As the people if they want more affordable housing (and forbid investors from buying them by having strict rules that require you to actually live in the house more than 250 days/year and only have one affordable property per family unit). But no, now they say they won't build more housing also to reduce our carbon footprint. 😂

Just to put things in perspective, if you have got in an airliner, and flown somewhere else on the planet, then you have done more harm to the environment than the guy with a hopped-up BMW can do in a lifetime. Airliners turn huge quantities of fuel into tunnels of burnt-carbon through the air. You cannot claim the moral high ground, and then get on an airliner. :) Higher (or no) speed limits in Germany have an insignificant effect on climate. If you really want to reduce carbon emissions in Germany, then replace fossil-fuels burnt for electricity with nuclear, solar, and wind.

you failed to address a big part of the issue in this video. driving in cities isn't so much a matter of CO2 emissions and climate protection as it is about smog affecting the health of the city's residents. cars are not a huge part of CO2 emissions globally or for the people living here (although of course all alternative travel methods in a city emmit less CO2), but smog primarily from cars has been shown to still cause half a million deaths per year in europe alone. that is the main difference between those who drive in cities and those who use other means of transportation.

People like him shouldn't be allowed to drive at all. Otherwise, I do understand the pain of going 30 on a broad main street in Berlin especially when you are in a rush. My main reason for taking a car in a city is to get faster to a destination than by train or bike. 30 limits make cars kinda pointless. When people are educated and trained in the art and science of driving, as the Germans are speed limits are pointless and an unnecessary encumbrance. Here in the US the rates of accidents and fatalities is greater than in Germany due to the lack of proper training and, more importantly, the lack of an attitude of the serious nature of driving. It saddens me to know that most people drive as if it were a passive experience like watching television. The problem is further exasurbated by the attitude here in the US of entitlement. Most people view getting their driver's license as a right rather than the privilege it actually is. Privileges need to be earned. Every motorcycle rider out there knows what I'm talking about.

I think a 30kph limit in cities and towns is just a big F you to drivers. I'm seeing it pop up in small towns in the south of BW too, where a main road goes through the town or village. Cars are the most efficient at the lowest possible speed, where the highest available gear can still be used. That's usually around 80kph. So switching from 50 to 30 should actually reduce efficiency. (Of course there's also the stop and go, which can change the equation...) At any rate, I think the only good solution is to allow cars to get as close to city centers as it is reasonable at decent speeds, give them good parking options and make the down-towns car free. It's no fun for drivers either to be stuck in the tiny streets, looking for parking. Where cars shouldn't be or where there's no through traffic, like a residential neighborhood, sure put up the 30 limit. But have an option available to go around it faster! I am of course one of those crazies, who drives at 200+ speeds on the autobahn, wherever possible. Though with the ever increasing traffic, it's starting to be possible less and less, except for the middle of the night. So the actual speed limit doesn't necessarily matter anymore.

And if you consider the fact that throwing your old car away, to get a new one is even more damaging to the climate and environment. It's better to instead just use your old diesel for a decade longer. And Tesla's are way to wasteful cars in general, even if they are electric. They are just way to big and inefficient, to be promoted as a good thing for the planet. Just use public transport, if you have the chance.
