Essential Roller Coaster History, Episode 3: The Dark Ages (1929 - 1971)

Ойын-сауық

In episode three of Essential Roller Coaster History, we look at the often forgotten decades between the Roaring 1920's and the Coaster Renaissance of the 1970's. We'll examine how the Great Depression, World War II, and the amusement park's declining image all contributed to the eventual closure of local parks nationwide and the unfortunate destruction of many classic coasters. We'll also look at Disneyland, Arrow Development, and the rise of the steel coaster, events that set the foundation for the coaster comeback of the 1970's.

    Thanks! I loved seeing the old coasters. Today, in Houston we have NOTHING!... no big amusement park, no big coaster. Why?...no money. Sad, for the kids' sake. I'm glad that I grew up when we had two large amusement parks, during two different time periods.

    Riverview Park is the loss that hurts the most for me, for how iconic it was, and for the fact that the owners just randomly decided they didn't want to run it anymore.

    @@JNattyBoi Definitely. I'm really curious as to if they would have stayed an independent park or not, if it'd have the same fate as Willow Grove eventually, or if it'd go on to make its own chain of amusement parks.

    In the 1960's some traditional amusement parks started to emulate the success of Disney Land by adding more modern rides and themed sections such as Cedar Point and Geauga Lake.

    A piece of the dark ages but from one amusement park (Waldameer in Erie PA) in 1938 the park lost their only "Intense" Coaster (Ravine Flyer 1) due to the park's only death and didn't get another one until 2004 with the Mauer coaster called "Steel Dragon" and a few years later "Ravine Flyer 2" Opened up with pretty much the original layout (Station was moved and the Bridge is an airtime hill instead of a dip) Also, Conneaut Lake Park is still around and has a few new rides for the season (Eyerly Octopus, Larson Dizzy Dragon, and a Slide) but Blue Streak is SBNO for 2021 but will most likely reopen in 2022 due to COVID hitting the park badly after a Financial Battle in the 2010s but did lose the Tumble Bug

  • @JNattyBoi

    @JNattyBoi

    2 жыл бұрын

    According to RCDB they've been building steel coasters since the late 1800's (rcdb.com/r.htm?order=-8&ty=1&ot=2), most are scenic railway-type rides (like Montaña Suiza, which is an amazing looking ride by the way) or tiny kiddie coasters. Many consider Roller Coaster at Hanayashiki to be the first modern, full size steel roller coaster, but it's certainly up for debate

    I have just found your channel today, 20 May, 2021, and I am thrilled to see your videos. I have been to Riverview in Chicago as a young child and still have vivid memories of that experience almost 70 years ago. Have you ever written about Willow Grove park outside of Philadelphia? There was a Thunderbolt there and it was amazing. This was the park where my grade school had its annual end of year picnic. In 7th grade we were able to get the nuns to ride the Thunderbolt with us. Again, thank you for the great memories!, Ray Moderski.

Wonder how many parks and coasters we will lose to COVID, 2020 was such a bad year for amusement parks and while things are looking up in the US Europe and Asia are still disasters
