The RCT1 Spinning Coaster in REAL LIFE (Plus other RollerCoaster Tycoon 1 Coaster Oddities)

Ойын-сауық

In this follow-up to my “Every RCT Classic Coaster Type in Real Life" Video, we examine the bizarre origins of three coaster types from the original RollerCoaster Tycoon, taking a deep look at what may have inspired them, and even hearing from game designer and programmer Chris Sawyer himself on the story behind the most mysterious coaster type in the history of the series.

    It's absurdly unlikely Sawyer sees this, but learning the history there wasn't a disappointment at all. The tricks and quirks used to make RCT not just possible but perform well on the computers kids were likely to be using at the time are themselves interesting, and changing a design to fit them makes total sense.

    I have a theory as to what happened with the inverted coaster train (I have no actual proof of this, it's just a feeling that I have): Notice how in the base RCT1, there are no coasters with 4-across trains. The reverse freefall coaster has three-across rows, and the vertical drop coaster have six-across, but it's only in the expansions where cars with 4-across seating became available. The flat and water rides are the same: the lauched freefall only has two seats on each side, the pirate ship seats two people per row, the rapids boats are also two passengers per side, etc. The splash boats, like the 4-across inverted trains, weren't introduced until the expansions. It's possible that the lack of a 4-across inverted coaster train in the base game was due to either graphical or programming limiations that weren't overcome until the expansions were in development, and the 2-across train was included as a compromise rather than Sawyer and Foster taking inspiration from Anaconda. It would also explain why the 2-across train is replaced by the 4-across train once you install Loopy Landscapes. What complicates this is the aforementioned vertical drop coaster, as it raises the question as to how they managed to get a six-across car working in the base game, but not four-across. I think the answer to this could relate to a theory I have regarding Megaworld Park, and how it was originally designed for the base game (you receive a blank version of it when you complete all scenarios in the base game, the scenario that was eventually made only has the base game rides available at the start, and many of the ride icons in the base game match up with rides that appear in the scenario even though said scenario wasn't added until Loopy Landscapes) - they *did* manage to get wider trains working eventually, but the vertical drop coaster was prioritized due to time constraints. Megaworld Park was, similarly, held back perhaps due to a lack of time needed to playtest the scenario. Or it was originally just a testing ground and wasn't meant to be a scenario until the developers changed their minds while working on Loopy Landscapes. I could be way off with all of this, and some of this could be confirmation bias, but it would all seem to line up given how strangely the inverted coaster was implemented.

  • @JNattyBoi

    @JNattyBoi

    Жыл бұрын

    Hey sorry I never got the chance to reply to this earlier, but I think this theory is excellent! The vertical drop coaster does complicate it a bit, but i think your argument around priorities and potential time constraints is sound. Thanks for taking the time to write all of this up!

    What’s even weirder with the 2 across trains is that it was exclusive to Vanilla RCT1. If you had the expansion packs the existing Inverted coasters in the original scenarios would still have the 2 across seating, but if you built a new one it would give you the 4 across.

    I always thought the spinning cars were a somewhat based on the Intamin Half-Pipe model's trains but apparently that also premiered in 2003. The same goes for the 2-across inverts, I thought that was based on the Intamin inverts (both coincidentally named Tornado) but that's also from 2001, despite the track being much different the trains look similar Impressive research, appreciate that deep dive!

And when there were two types of wooden coaster (RCT1 was my jam more than 2 back in the day). I wonder if the awesome OpenRCT2 devs intend to bring back those spinning cars! I have a whole new respect for them knowing they're a result of function over form.

    Yes I did use the spinning cars on the steel mini coasters. Many forget that in the original RCT1 there were no banked turns for the steel mini coasters. They were added with added attractions only. I used the spinning cars in Sprightly Park when my gaol was to repay the loan within those 3 years but without repeating any ride twice. I didn't know about the strats nowadays used by many like Marcel Vos.

    I remember using those cars when I first played as a kid... Nausea rating shot up and there was sick all over my paths. Needless to say I didn't use it much after that and sadly since the cars are unavailable in RCT2 (in the same way as the 2 seater giovanoli isn't) you can no longer build it. Though I can't say I'd ever find its use. Awesome video and thanks to Chris Sawyer and JNattyBoi for solving an age old question we all wanted to know the answer to. My original predictions were for the maurer sohn spinning cars but as you know it didn't suit the multiple car trains.

    I know I'm late, but another thing to note is that, in RCT1, the Articulated Trains are, indeed, likely based on the Bobs Trains. However, in RCT2, Classic, and OpenRCT2, the trains are definitely based on the GCI Millennium Flyer trains.

    Some notes (that I'm sure you encountered in your research, but I still think are interesting) 2:51 Shockwave was built in 1994, *after* B&M had already built several coasters under their own firm. B&M still worked on Z-Force (the first ride to feature box track to my knowledge, from 1985) and SFMM's Shockwave (Intamin's first stand-up, from 1986), but I've always wondered if they assisted Intamin in building Stand-Up at Skara Sommarland or Drayton Manor's Shockwave 3:21 Giovanola is long rumored to have also been responsible for Tower of Terror at Gold Reef City, though they denied involvement with that troubled coaster 4:33 Arrow was the only *modern* manufacturer of single-rail steeplechases (not counting S&S's recent prototype set up next to their factory). Steeplechases were a popular attraction in the early 1900's (usually with up to 6 tracks!) but documentation of that history is poor. Coney Island's Steeplechase Park is probably the most famous. 10:04 RCT1's default trains for the Mini Suspended Coaster type are *also* a mystery to me - Sawyer and Foster included the more realistic hanging box-style cars seen on Batflyer at Lightwater Valley in RCT2, and I imagine the RCT1 version was easier to animate/implement along the same lines as the RCT1 spinning cars Really cool that we finally have an answer from the man himself on the RCT1 spinning cars. Great followup vid on the original!

    Honestly the steel mini spinning cars aren’t very good. They increase any track layout’s intensity and nausea rating. They can’t be used with banked turns or helixes. Just use any of the other train types. They’re far more practical and cool looking .
