Essential Coaster History, Episode 5: The Coaster Wars Begin (1989-1997)
Ойын-сауық
In Episode 5 of Essential Roller Coaster History, we cover the beginnings of the Coaster Wars, a period of time where ride manufacturers and theme park chains competed to build the biggest, baddest, and most record-breaking roller coaster. We’ll examine the birth of the hypercoaster, the re-invention of the modern looping coaster, the mid 90’s scramble for wood coaster supremacy, and the impact of electromagnetic propulsion technology in coaster construction.

Finally a new masterpiece from you! This channel is criminally underrated!
Please release another episode of this! 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Absolutely fantastic. This is about as good as coaster content on KZread gets. Incredibly well-researched as well. Exceptional work, my friend. Can't wait for part 6!

Fun Fact and a bit of Waldameer Park lore - The Ravine Flyer 2 was supposed to be a CCI that was supposed to be built in 1998 but lawsuits from the township and state pushed it back past CCI's closure and it was finally built by The Gravity Group and opened in 2008

Very cool! I knew it had quite the troubled past but didnt know that CCI was on board at one point, makes sense given the types of parks they were working with in this era. Thanks for the comment!
Probably the most underrated amusement park/coaster channel out there - wish you would post more often. Content is top-quality stuff!

Thank you so much! Keeping the videos high quality unfortunately means that they take a long time to put together. I should have a new video out this weekend though so stay tuned!
Just binge watched every episode. Truly QUALITY CONTENT. My boyfriend and I are dying for the next part!
before I begin watching, I'd just like to say: *LET'S FUCKING **_GOOOOOOOOO_*
I found the first video in this set yesterday, and I watched all 5. Very good work. I found my self taking notes on coaster names, and writing down the ones I have ridden. It turns out, I have ridden 15 coasters that you mention by name. Harrisburg Pa is close to a lot of parks, you have to give credit to the North East....we love our parks. I will only bother to mention one just now, The Comet at Hershey Park. I am 64 and I visited Hershey park dozens of times when it was a free park with picnic groves. I am sure I have ridden more than 50 times in my life. It is still my Number 1 coaster, with the Phoenix at Knoebles Grove (having moved from texas) would be my second. Again, well over 50 rides. Thanks for the videos. Job well done!!!! Chetty from Harrisburg, Pa.

That's awesome! And a really cool exercise, I'm not sure how many of these rides I've actually ridden. I do know that I'm also a huge Comet fan - I originally got into coasters after a visit to Hershey when I was younger, so the Comet played a big (if indirect) role in the creation of these videos. Thanks for the comment!
I didn't think there would be more videos in this series, but im very glad there is. Great video :)

I was looking for a good, thorough history on roller coasters and you definitely went above and beyond. I watched all of your coaster history videos, and looking forward to the next one. Very informative and entertaining! Your videos rival the best history videos I've seen.. including Weird History and the like.

This is a fantastic series!!!!!!!!!! I hope you release part six someday soon -- this is so well researched and fascinating. Thank you!

Ermergerd! Wuz not expecting this! 😮😮😮 Can't wait to watch it!
Great series!
adventureland is my home park! i've been going there for 15 years and had no idea how significant outlaw was. that curved drop is insane and although it's certainly a rough coaster, it looks great---especially from the water park. also, it's pretty crazy that adventureland got the first gerstlauer infinity coaster in this hemisphere.
Holy cow it’s been so long. Genuinely excited to see another installment. Thank you so much!

Make another one plz! 1997-2005, then 2005-present!
1:59 this was brilliantly subtly-delivered 😅
I can personally attest that you were required to remove earrings on Steel Phantom. First time I rode it I had just got my ears pierced and had to take my studs out. Worth it!
3:30 Rest in peace Cliff :(

We are watching this series in our 6th grade class!!!

Amazing to think that two engineers from a Swiss manufacturing company could, in only a few years, dethrone a juggernaut in the coaster industry like Arrow Dynamics.
Great video man!! I love videos formatted like this
Dick Kinzel and the Magnum made Cedar Point what it is today. The CP of the '90s was a magical place. #Hypercoaster
I'm just wondering when a new coaster war will start, and culminate with coasters that break Mach 2 speed and the 2,000-foot height marks.
Great content

yay
This video makes me feel yucky for not having a single Batman credit, knowing they are EVERYWHERE. This, to me, kinda seems like a second golden era for coasters. Arrow's still here, the new kids are popping up. It's all working out. On Arrow, though, it's good to learn why they're so rough. I had never really considered it. At a park I used to work at, we had a GCI wooden coaster. Ran flawlessly, it broke maybe once a year. Great to have backstory for them, too. Can't wait for Gerstlauer to pop up, I'm sure that'll be soon. Of course, I'm also sure that RMC will be soon, and, to that, I look less forward... As always, an excellent video! Thank you!

Hey thanks man! Definitely a really interesting era, I personally think Batman and Drachen Fire are two of the most important coasters in modern history, signaled a passing of the torch if you will. And yes I was very happy to talk about GCI, love them and their coasters. Thanks for the comment as always!
Me still waiting for the next episode
What if the Dinn corporation was named after both founders, and then later merged with Bolliger & Mabillard? Makes one think...
Hell yeah a new jnatty vid ❤❤
Excellent summary. I'd only take issue with the strict definition of hypers (excluding Titan and Steel Eel as hypers) since hyper/giga/strata are all marketing terms invented at Cedar Point and don't hold a lot of useful value in coaster comparisons. But that's more a fun pedantic argument than real criticism - like arguing about what counts as a credit.
@JNattyBoi
Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Definitely a fair argument to bring up, I personally view the terms (hyper/giga/strata) as a reflection of the coaster model/coaster type - Steel Eel is clearly a Morgan hyper model, even though it doesn't hit the 200 foot threshold where many would consider it a hyper. There's definitely an interesting debate to be had here though, I'll try to approach Millennium and the gigas with some more nuance in the next video haha

It's great to see another installment of this series and you did a great job, but I will admit hitting the play button on this video and hearing undertale music playing fucking sent me.

Ah The Big One, I won £5 for my drawing of it at my local horticultural show (I grew up 10 miles from Blackpool) and £5 was a lot to 7 year old me. I am also scared that it’s 30 next year.
How do you make a whole video on the history of coasters and you don’t mention Alton Towers once? First ever vertic drop coaster, first ever hydraulic launch coaster, so many missed opportunities.
I love your videos, but it's a bit too fast for me. 0.75x speed seems a better fit for me 😅

Good to know! I’ll try to slow down the next one, I didn’t want it to drag on for too long but it still ended up being a 25 minute video haha
Six flags ga gets no love. The president of the park got b and m to design there first then he had the idea for Batman down to the name and asked them to suspend it. He really should be applauded as well because he is why we have b and m.
as much as I'd like to keep the vid at 69 likes, this really deserves a like!
That story about drachen fire never happened that way. The decision to go with Arrow on the DF project was made long before B&M even existed.
