essential beginner harmonica lesson - how to hold your hand and arms

Музыка

Every beginning harmonica needs guidance on this crucial issue. How should the fingers of your harp-holding hand actually clasp the harmonica, and how should your arms be angled? With Adam Gussow of Modern Blues Harmonica.

Gussow, a KZread leader in blues harmonica instruction since 2007, is currently appearing in "Satan & Adam," a Netflix film about his longtime partnership with Mississippi native Sterling "Mr. Satan" Magee, a blues legend.

Just realized the other day … self taught mistake of a lifetime. I hold the harp in my right hand … I’m trying to relearn now to hold it in my left hand. It’s awkward right now but I’m going to keep on with it. I can hear the wha wha tonal improvement and I seem to still be able to find the right notes intuitively as that didn’t change. I’m right handed btw just started out wrong I guess depending on who you ask. I wouldn’t change if I didn’t think it is a difference maker. I wish I would have paid attention to this 20 years ago. Forcing myself to relearn a 20 year mistake. Have not tried a mic in left hand yet. Playing harp upside down I don’t think I can relearn the notes phrasing now playing left low to right high all these years. I have 10 1/8 inch hands so I have a gift for the air chamber I can make. I was a little devastated when watching Ronnie Shellist on this topic a couple of nights ago. If you think I’m making too much of a big deal let me know but I don’t think I am. I think it is that important … unfortunately.

I'm loving your channel man, It is making me realise I have been taking my guitar playing for granted 😔. I now am reminded of the excitement and indeed existentialist joy of learning not just a new song but a new song on a new instrument, and it has reminded me how special that really is in this crazy and short life of ours. I would honestly say picking up my old harp recently and actually attempting learning it properly this time has been a God given intervention. I've been out of work a while and have become very low, very dark and depressed. I can honestly say I haven't felt depressed much at all the last week or so, and I've watched at least a 100 of your vids man. Music is so special. Seriously. Thankyou 😊 P.s. I've also just bought 'A hero with a 1000 faces' after hearing you talk about it.

👍 👌 🎶 ✌️ 🤘.. For Rhythm Diatonic and for composition that require full octave... Chromatic I assume...My most favourite Chromatic player is Franz Chmel.. But you know what? I'm enjoying the impeccable resonance of Low Tuned Rocket 🚀 and also Thunderbird.. Crossover is cool 😎 as well and Steve Baker 365 Pear wood.. Mr Gussow is very spontaneous, versatile and unconventional player.. I like Winslow Yerxa too.. I'm also playing Rick Epping XB40 .. It's such a sheer joy with it to do. I'm a hobby player since 1977.. Here I attempt to imitate Adam, Musselwhite, Butterfield, Magic Dick and you're already aware Sonnyboy, Carey Bell, Hugo Diaz and etc.. Many other legend's particularly African American 🇺🇸 who are 6 feet under the ground now.. My 61 year's old Puerto Rican wife from South Bronx NY 🗽 says that I'm cuckoo.. 🤣 I become cuckoo's when I listen to Blackfoot number.. Train, Train 🚉 and of course Jimi Hendrix dude's.. Walter Trout is arriving soon in Hamburg.. Now he's good.. B.B King 👑 concert was also awesome beside The Who & etc.. You guy's in America, Ireland and also in England are musically much incredible.. I mean without Scott Joplin, Robert Johnson and Django Reinhardt.. I wouldn't have understood what's down to Earth 🌍 music is all about minus lousy Waltz.. I also got influenced by Puerto Rican music 🎶 it's multicultural unlike typical approach.. Here in Hamburg Germany 🇩🇪 they don't have any Harmonica and Blue's enthusiasts.. Konstantin Reinfeld is exception.. While Steve Baker also reside here in collaboration with Hohner.. I play various brand's from Hohner, Seydel, Hering, Suzuki and also Tombo.. But at the very moment I'm sitting in confinement due to Chinese Checkers 😂 Well! So long no vaccine is available all one can do is minimise interaction in public... I wonder after Mr Adam Gussow goes through my written monologue.. He might also assume that I'm in all course of social normalcy.. 🤣

Adam so I have some pretty good news that I think you might think is cool. I’ve been playing harmonica for about a year now and since then I’ve started an Instagram page where I just basically post videos of me playing. Anyways, recently a guy asked me to play on his next album, which is pretty cool considering, as I said, I’ve been playing for a year! Now I’m not playing on every song, I’m only playing on a cover of You Was Born to Die by Blind Willie McTell, but even still it’s pretty crazy to me. Anyways I just figured I may as well share it considering over the past year you’re one of the people who’s taught me a lot of what I know. So, thanks!

My hands are really small and the harp extends past my index. Is it ok if I move the harp up on to the web of my fingers so that I can cup the harp? It also gives me a little bit more room to work with on the harmonica, instead of having the whole thing covered by my finger.

Hello Adam. Is there any reason to pinch the harp with your left hand? I'm right-handed (well, maybe a bit both-handed), but my harp lies definitely more comfortably while pinched by the right hand, when the left hand is free to make any effects. But I'm a very-very beginner, so maybe there's some reason I'm not seeing yet.

  • @gussowsclassicbluesharmoni2726

We hold it in the left hand because the low notes are on the left and because if you want to get wah-wah hand effects, you need to cup and close down the low notes. When you hold it with the right hand, you lose the ability to make wah wah sounds in that way--unless you turn the harp over, so the numbers are on the bottom and the low notes are on the right.

Almost all harmonica players hold it primarily with their left hand, regardless of whether they're righty or lefty. Occasionally you find somebody who holds it with their right hand, but most who do that turn the harp upside down.
