Gussow's classic blues harmonica videos

Gussow's classic blues harmonica videos

Here you'll find a fresh and engaging series of blues harmonica instructional videos designed to answer both basic beginner questions and more advanced concerns. Your host is KZread pioneer Adam Gussow--one of the best-known and most widely respected blues harp teachers and players in the world.

This channel also features exceptional performances by blues harmonica masters like Nat Riddles and Jason Ricci, along with curated HD versions of selected instructional videos from Gussow's other KZread channel, founded in February 2007.

Gussow is half of the world-famous Harlem blues duo, Satan & Adam, along with the Mississippi-born legend Sterling "Mr. Satan" Magee. More recently, Gussow and his Blues Doctors duo has joined forces with Magee's nephew, singer/dancer/front-man Rod Patterson, to form Sir Rod & The Blues Doctors. Gussow is also the creator of Modern Blues Harmonica, one of the world's leading blues harp instructional websites.

Have you played a Hohner 590BX Big river? If so, your opinion? Just ordered one in the key of Eb. Love your videos, btw. You helped me decide which key was the best fit for my taste and my vocal range. Big thanks, Amanda from Memphis, Tennessee

At 80 this weekend, I'm old enough for the infamous monkey gland. But no need! A beginning harp, plus this amazing musician's encouragement in just two tasters and I'm feeling reborn. Big thanks to you Maestro Gusson.

So excited!!! Absolute beginner here, grateful for this brilliant introduction to a wonderfully expressive little instrument. Gives back everything you give to it, and more.

I have played quietly few times, at hotels, at the doctor’s office, car wash, repair shop, etc. It can be very satisfying and I often come up with a new riff :)

Was recording harmonica on a song today and came across this video. Thank you for making me aware of how to manipulate the frequencies of a harmonica. Lots of gold for me to reference here. Shoutout the hohner C blues harmonica, I got the same one!

As retired professional classical (bas)clarinet player (belgium) and teacher I want to play an other instrument with a more auditive way of playing without a visual input of a score... Hard for me , because I played my whole live with a score. Difficult! The way you explains the harp gives me the courage to go further... thanks A question : many times I want to relearn some lessons, but can not find them. Is there a sequence, structure in your lessons so I can bild up and learn? Thanks

What 3 keys? I think that depends on either your singing or the singers you play with the most. For me: Learning: C, Playing the blues on my guitar in E or open E so A. And the singers I jam with seem to sing in A the most so D. So for me it was (C,A,D) After that the singers want keys of Bb or C so Eb or F.

I hope your renditions of Whammer Jammer turn people on to the J. Geils band's many albums BEFORE Freeze Frame. "The Bad Boys of Boson,"-- What a band! I have all their albums up to Love Stinks, the one which I would happily give away. Saw them right after Peter Wolf shaved his iconic beard and I didnt recognize him at all until the music started. 🤣

Hi sir Gussow, I am already 38 years old and I started learning to play harmonica just at this age. Actually In the Philippines we are not used to hearing blues music, we are more in pop, rnb, classics, rock but not blues. My question is can I be just a single note player if I was not able to master other techniques like bending, tongue blocking, puckering and etc? I only know the wah wah effect and the train.

My keyboard makes wonderful harmonica sounds. If you have a harmonica player in your band, all songs get harmonica whether they need it or not as these guys think it improves ANY song LOL.

The only way I would tongue block is to get those fancy slapped notes, and I would immediately switch to lip pursing if I don't need the slap anymore. Other than that, lip pursing feels more natural to me
