Essan Bothy - Bothy Overnighter at the Essan Bothy and Trangia Stove Cooking
Bothy overnighter at the Essan Mountain Bothy.
"There has recently been a significant change in the course of the Allt Easain flowing past Essan Bothy. The burn now flows close to the bothy (see pictures below) and directly north down towards the railway line, rather than follow it’s old course towards the railway bridge. As a consequence, access to the bothy may be difficult or impossible when the burn is in spate, if approaching by land from the east, or if using a boat across Loch Eilt to moor up at the normal landing position under the railway bridge. The area to the north of the bothy may also be difficult to cross. Be aware that the burn can rise very quickly overnight. The only safe access in wet conditions is overland from the west (Lochailort) via Creagan an t-Sagairt."

That cooking sketch in the bothy, with the candles going, almost made it look like an attractive thing to do... without doubt the best bothy advert ive seen yet... Almost wanted to dust off my Trangia set as well... Thank you for sharing.

I live in the wilds of west Wales, we get river levels changing quite dramatically like this also. This was a brilliant vid Stripey, the views again are spectacular especially with the mist in the morning. The stew looked mouthwatering by the way. Thanks for your hard work, it must take a lot of time making these vids. Keep smiling 👍

Thanks a lot! Yeah a little more rain and I would have needed to head back via the west hills and a long slog around Loch Eilt. I think as well that it was worth it to carry all the extra bits for dinner, actually considering to carry it more often during the shorter days - gives me something to do in the tent/bothy and I do quite enjoy cooking at home and with a trangia it is nearly as good 👍 Thanks a lot! Lovely Highland walk, and a decent bothy at the end point. The beef stew looked fantastic!! Not sure I have made a better looking one at home. I might guess that it needed a little paper sachet each of salt and pepper - but it looked masterful. I did note the yellow warning sign that you were entering a flood plane, so perhaps the torrents were not so much of a surprise. I really look forward to your next Highland adventure. My thanks for sharing your World - really wonderful.
@StripeyHatGuy
8 ай бұрын
Oh I didn't show it but I brought some salt, no pepper so. I was aware of the flash flood area but I didn't think that the little rain we had would be enough to increase the water levels by this amount...but again it shows you just how quick it can go and that the signs aren't up for no reason 😉. If the water levels would have been a bit higher I would have walked out via the west and back on the street - not nice but a safe alternative to the east approach to the Essan bothy. Thanks a lot for watching! ATB Stripey
Hi Stripey wow mate, that stew looked very good, you certainly ate like a king on this adventure. That river crossing was something else in the morning, just goes to show what a difference just a few hours of rain makes. All the best Dave

Thanks a lot! no it didn’t take too long. I cooked the whole meal with one trangia filling (is like 35-40min. I believe).
I love cooking on my trangia with a little imagine it’s amazing what can be made with simple ingredients..you could use packet rice instead of mash…your fire makes really cosy too.

Yeah definitely, a trangia is just a proper outdoor kitchen - usually I carry just my UL setup but for winter (longer time in the tent) or shorter trips I think that the trangia is a solid option. Thanks a lot, Stripey

@@StripeyHatGuy it use a. Brew pot using similar to your ultra set up, it works great on my cycle trips out, fits well into a small corner but the comfort a fresh brew makes to the soul is immeasurably. @@keithchambers-oq6nb thanks a lot for your tips/experiences mate! I usually do just the stuff I have done before at home as well so I am super happy about new ideas 🙌👍. I really think that every setup has its place, for comfort food or even just to boil some water in a kettle the trangia is my favourite one at the moment. I do also own a msr multifuel (1st gen.) but it is noisy as hell and I still have some diesel in it from pre KZread time 😂. Probably time to use that nasty stuff as well at some point in winter
So did your feet got wet during the hike and the river crossing ? 😇 What a surprise to see you cook a nice dish with the Trangia instead of the classic pasta bolognaise . Was it the Trangia 27 kit ? You where lucky to be alone in the bothy , imagine cooking this meal with full of people around the table . Did you at least kept a little bit of beer to drink ? Hi Sylvain 👋, I use the Trangia 27 HA, don't think to much of the non-stick version in the long term due to heat spots with an alcohol stove. Yeah I left some beer in the can but I also brought a little whisky 😉. Regarding the pasta bolognaise...no worries I still prefer not to carry a kitchen sink when I go out 😂 Cheers Stripey
