Thank you. Glad it might prove useful! I know some folk are a bit unsure and that keeps some good folk away from the bothies so hoping to help a bit. Happy new year to you!

Very good to see an actual toilet. I think even the remote bothies could have one - most likely an old style pit toilet where you have a "little house" with a seat and a hole, where you cover what's done with earth or even ash from the fire, since they almost all have fireplaces! They worked for a long time where there wasn't modern plumbing, and they still work. Add a water butt or two like they have here and you've got good enough water for hand washing, or boiling to drink. After all there's plenty of winter days where the ground is too hard to dig a hole, even if that appeals!

I think there could be an argument to be made for expanding their presence, certainly. In the short term it may offset human impact on the wider environment by narrowing, and deepening, the area of human footprint. I reckon the trade-off in terms of workload for basic maintenance, risks associated with disrepair, and so on could be an interesting conversation to have. When I was at Guirdil Bothy there were times when digging a hole in freezing ground at night was not the challenge I was after at that secific moment. The toilet at Craig felt like a wonderful luxury after that.

Popped up on my feed for whatever reason or algorithm which is known to me........but thankfully it did. I visited the Bothy with friends in days well past when it was a Youth hostel......one of my most fondest of memories of the area that will never fade and continue to bring a smile! Looking forward to your next trip out, is Camasunary on the list?

Ah, thank you! Glad it prompted some fond memories. I'm hoping to tick off a fair few this year and spend a bit of time in and around them. I shall add it to the list, certainly! The ones on Jura are a real draw and I might end up in Sourlies as I'm heading to knoydart soon. Oh, and a Happy New Year!

I would love to camp in some bothys but I can't travel and I live in the US. We don't have bothys here which is a shame. So, I'm doing it through you. Thanks for sharing...

Thank you for living vicariously, I guess. They're a lovely wee subculture over here and pretty special for those who love lonely and wild places.

Hi, thanks for the superb film. I tend to camp outside the bothies (for my peace and for others!), so it would be helpful if you could mention if there are flat camping spots near the building. All the best with your films.

Hullo! Thanks for the feedback - I've had the odd question about camping spaces recently so will definitely be including it in videos moving forwards (and kind of touch on it in my next one). Thanks again!
