I think whats most impressive about Bo is that he wasn't a showboater. He had humility and respect for sports. He instead invested his energy in his game and not self congratulatory bs. Thats what I respect most about the man. It speaks volumes of his character.

His stats in both pro sports before injury were not among the league's best. He was a great athlete and a spectacular performer, but there's no reason think he'd have won batting or rushing titles. Jim Brown, Wilt Chamberlain, Michael Jordan- they did what they did, maximum output, from the start. They carried their teams. Bo didn't.

I dont care what anyone has to say, if you never saw Bo do what he could do then you dont know Bo. He was, simply put, a Freak of Nature. Never lifted a weight in his life and still looked like that. If he wouldnt have broken that blood vessel in his leg, he would be a 2 sport Hall of Famer. Perfect Genetics and Talent = Greatest Pure Athlete Ever.

I think the safest and most responsible way to say what you said is to simply state that Bo never TESTED positive for any PEDs. It's not as if he played in an era where steroids was unknown to athletes.

jerry goldfarb You're wrong on that one. Remember East Germany and the famous doping campaign that began in the 1936 Olympics? Yeah, East Germany as it was called back then ran one of the most successful doping programs that lasted over 2 decades, Allowing them to dominate the Olympics over that time period, from 1936 to 1968. East Germany or just Germany is also considered to be the inventors of PEDs, mostly anabolic steroids. I am not saying Jim Brown was dirty, but they definitely had PEDs back then. Granted, the PEDs we have today are much more powerful and undetectable because of the advancements in modern medicine or science but the use of PEDs have been around for almost a century.

People need to respect the past and understand this. Jim Brown was BEFORE Bo Jack's time! He was ONE of the FIRST athletes to play 2 SPORTS. Brown is in the Lacrosse Hall of Fame considered to be one of the best to ever play it in the sport, All American in High School football, lacrosse, basketball I mean the guy was the REAL DEAL also a pivotal force in civil rights for African Americans plus the short lived movie career but he was yet again one of the FIRST brothers to sleep with a white woman on screen the guy just never stops scoring HA look at the stats Jim Brown: 118 games out of 118 games played (0 games missed), 2359 rush attempts, 12312 rushing yards,126 touchdowns, 5.2 yds. per carry, 104.3 rushing yds. per game (highest ever) 3 MVP's 9 Pro Bowl's, led the league in rushing 8 out of 9 years (record) 1 NFL Championship LAST in Cleveland Sports History (I live in Cleveland feel my pain) Golden Standard RB period. Bo Jackson Football Career: 38 games played, 23 games starting, 515 Rush attempts, 2782 rushing yards, 16 touchdowns, 5.4 yds. per carry, 73.2 rushing yds. per game 1 Pro Bowl Just 1 I got my stats from Pro Football Reference.. All I am trying to say is Bo Jackson is a legendary athlete that was current somewhat compared to Brown in the 50's and 60's Television and all that was in Bo's time period, Jim Brown you had to listen to the radio so a lot of people really missed out on how TRULY GREAT Jim Brown was this whole debate is fun and all but NUMBERS DON'T LIE!

Interesting that you mentioned Jim Thorpe. When sports pundits were asked in about 1950 to pick the greatest athletes of the last 50 years, Thorpe was at the top of the list ahead of people like Babe Ruth, Jesse Owens and Joe Louis. 50 years later, ESPN did their Sportscentury list of the greatest 100 North American athletes of the last 100 years. On that list, Owens and Ruth were now ahead of Thorpe. The list is as follows: Jordan Ali Ruth Jim Brown Gretzky Jesse Owens Jim Thorpe Jack Nicklaus Babe Didrikson-Zaharias I can understand Ali being ahead of Thorpe. Same with Jim Brown. Not sure I understand Jordan and Gretzky being rated that high. Probably because Jordan was still so fresh in our minds.

may want to re-think that. Jim brown was the greatest lacrosse athlete in college history and did it without Bo Jacksons more modern equipment in all of browns sports. not to mention, Jim Brown started as a full back and was moved to the running back position after preforming non-human-like performances witch were, at his time, legend-like runs while breaking tackles with 5 guys on him and turning no gain plays into touchdowns and he is ranked at the top of the running back list, full back list, and college lacrosse list of all time. not to mention he hold the best yards per carry avg. 5.2, yard per game avg. 104.2 had 126 touchdowns in 9 years. do the math, if brown would have played as long as Emmit Smith did, he would have 254 rushing touchdowns and be at the top of the list. also, he through 3 passing touchdowns and participated in 5+ pro bowls and won at least 2 championships. so I think Jim Brown deserves being known for being the greatest athlete of all time.

You can find footage of Dion catching up to Bo in college and Bo stiff armed him to the ground. But the biggest difference between the two is that Dion played defense and everyone knew he wasn't physical he would tackle ankles. Bo played offense and ran over defensive linemen. Bo had way more power at the plate as well. As far as speed? Bo ran a 4.12 40 at the NFL combine. Bo was bigger, faster and stronger than Dion. Bo's injury aside. Bo was better.

I lean towards Bo, I think he would of been comparable to Brown if he decided to just focus on football but loved the fact that we got a year around dose of Bo. I agree the big snub was Jim Thorpe and glad to see so many still remember how gifted of an athlete he was. I also think Wilt should of been higher. he was both a basketball and track star and even later dabbled in volleyball.

Bo was an amazing athlete, and with Earl Campbell is one of two runners I would compare to Brown. One factor I didn't hear about though was durability, which in the long run is perhaps the most important factor of all, and in that regard nobody can touch Brown. In 9 years he never missed a game despite having every defense keying on him at all times. The running game was much more important in Brown's era, as the rules hadn't been changed yet to open up the passing game.

  • @richardplantan4375

You have to be kidding me. Bo only played in 38 games for the raiders before injury shortcircuted him but in the 3 years prior to getting hurt he didn't come close to a thousand yards in a season. Also, his career batting average in baseball was .250 . Your going to pick him over Jim Brown who is considered by many to be not only the greatest football player ever but the greatest La Crosse player ever.

  • @vestibulate

+Lalo Calderon Secretariat ran in precisely measured competitions organized by humans with full human participation- training sessions, jockeys, medical assistance, etc. His success depended upon a willingness to exert extreme effort for no demonstrable gain- purely for the chance to outrun others. All of which sounds a lot like sport to me. If you can get gorillas or cheetahs to take part in organized events which utilize their particular capacities in formal competition, your point might have some validity. In my view, thoroughbred horses are athletes, just not human athletes. And in the case of Secretariat, a shockingly great example.

Yeah but a 5-10 155lb qb aint gonna last long in college so maybe that was why. I mean lebron would have been a first round pick in the nfl at 22 had he wanted to be. Hell he still bigger than most Tight ends.

^ That's true to some extent. Lebron lost weight this year but at his biggest he's about 250-260. Now height adds a lot of weight. Kevin Durant is 230. While Adrain Peterson is 215. So you could say Durant weighs more then AP but when you look at them Ap is clearly much stronger. So yeah lebron is up there in weight but the tight ends that are the same size as him such as ,Gronk, Vernon Davis, Tony Gonzalez, Jimmy Graham(to a slight lesser extent) have more muscular build that helps better with contact. I personally think lebron would have a weird fit in the NFL

Jim Thorpe was an outstanding athlete for his era, but it was not an era of the professionalism this days. In my personal opinion is more difficult to be in an all-star game of 2 of the most played games in US in this days (millions of players) than back days were the amount of people playing and making the sport his life was not the same. I'm not saying that Jim Thorpe was not outstanding, I'm saying that for me is most valuable what Bo had made.

It is truly unfortunate that one of the greatest, Bo Jackson, had his career destroyed by injuring his hip on a apparently normal tackle-I will not go into Brown's lacrosse achievements, in which sport he was so unstoppable that the rules regarding how one can cradle the ball were changed-that being said, one cannot ignore durability-Brown missed 1/2 of 1 game in 9 years (concussion) and had the Browns not been leading big I have no doubt he would have played-in 1962, the only year he did not win the rushing title he played almost the entire season with a severely sprained (or broken) right wrist-due to this, in lieu of carrying ball in lt. arm and using rt. as devastating stiff arm, he carried ball in his injured rt. arm and used his left as a stiff arm which was far inferior to his rt. arm-he did not however miss a game, or part of one

It's Brown's fault that his favorite sport, Lacrosse, didn't have a professional league. According to this site. He was also offered $10K by a promoter to be a pro boxer but turned it down. Averaged over 100 yds/game for his entire career. He played twice as long as Jackson and retired at his prime. And the metric all Michael Jordan fanboys say is the only one that matters, Brown was an NFL champion. Jackson was not.

  • @PwoodrowI

    @PwoodrowI

It's absolute because it is true. How many gold medals does Brown have to his name? That's right, zero. Thorpe has quite a few if i remember correctly, and Bo could have easily won a few. The definition of athleticism is the ability to perform as many sports as possible. The Olympics is the benchmark standard for athleticism. End of story. Athleticism is ability, not seasons, stats, etc. Both of these guys could literally pick up a sport and be elite at it within 15 minutes, which is absolutely unreal. Bo and Thorpe had more ability than anyone ever.

I love discussing this, and I say that sure maybe Bo jackson was the best all around athlete... In the last century. What I find extremely interesting is that there was probably someone better. I mean just think about it, humans have been around for tens and hundreds of thousands of years in our present state. Statistically speaking, there was most definitely a complete freak of nature who spent his whole life in his tribe hunting and gathering. But who knows maybe he could run a 4.1 40, wrestle anyone to submission, and throw a rock at 108 mph. pretty cool to think about
