ESL Beginner Demo Lesson w/ Tips (A1) - Seasons
Teaching language learners at the beginner level is fun! Many people don't believe it's really possible to teach A1 students without using L1. To get A1 ESL students to be able to communicate takes a special use of techniques, patience and understanding of the methodology. It's all doable and beginners are easily one of the most rewarding levels to teach.
Chris Westergaard from The Language House TEFL in Prague demonstrates the 5 Points to Teaching Beginners methodology. This is a great lesson structure and series of guidelines for all your A1/Beginner EFL and ESL students.
A few things to look at are his TTT, eliciting, drilling, error correction, and building a conversation from the basic elements.

The 5 Points (basics)

Point 3: Practice questions and statements individually
Point 4: Controlled practice of all q/s
Point 5: Free practice (no notes + extra language)

What a great ESL teacher: he keeps the pace lively and brisk, which keeps everyone awake and engaged. He stays on task, and he uses enthusiasm and praises the students. Thank you for this demonstration.
I love this one! You should upload more videos with absolute beginners.

I'll try! I really don't teach much and I only get to do these when I do a demo for a TEFL class.

You're such a Great role model for every potential teacher! Thanks a bunch Chris
How about a lesson on how to plan a lesson plan in stages. A1 to Expert level? Not a lot of them on the net. And could be of great help to students studying TEFL TESL (EFL ESL). To be used as guidelines when they have to do lesson plans.
I did love this lesson. it's amazingly recursive and practical!
Awesome! Learned a lot from this demo lesson! Thank you so much
Very good Demo. Thank you! Very much helpful. Like it very much. :-) It is strange but one can rarely find good demo lessons in the internet & I don't know a reason why these types of lessons are absent in the net. I know the languege & would like to be a good teacher. :-)
🎉 I enjoyed your way of teaching . It's not boring at all.All the students are engaged. They practisd the language.❤❤
This can be perfectly applied for small groups, not easy for large group of people though. Elicitation always works best.

For larger groups, put students into pairs or groups of 3-4 and have them go from there! The teacher doesn't always need to be in the centre of everything!
Best video ever! helped me rejuggle my skills of when i use to teach.
Cool! So much enthusiasm!
Hey Chris you're such an inspiration
Hey Chris thank you so much for having this channel and information. All of your videos have been extremely helpful...but thats no wine glass @ 2:40
I love your classes please upload more demo classes :)

wow this was amazing and so so helpful, thank you
Great demo🎉 Learnt a lot
You are doing really well!
a really hard work . really appreciated.. 🥺🥺🥺
Simple, great lesson
technically good, effective, nice learning method and friendly style. Spot on, sometimes effective learning sessions are boring to watch, but what's more important of course is that learners are learning. good job Chris Westergaard. Are you a native English speaker?

Hello from Kurdistan ❤️. Thank you so much, I really got benefit from this video. Keep going 😊❤️
Great video! My only question is: how did the students know the words for 'seasons' and making questions like 'do you like...'? Did they learn this before the lesson either through homework or a previous lesson? thanks!

Question, would this method be considered tpr or audio lingual ?
Your enthusiasm!
excelent video, thanks
Well done
I like your teaching, as for me, repetition seems boring but really effective. However, I'm having problems with classrom atmosphere and student motivation.

You’re welcome!
I also like to have students do the cherades and Pictionary than elicit the answer a great way for engaging and involvement
how can you elicit with complete beginners? Or even elementary? We were always told to elicit but with low levels they just won`t know. Won`t they feel that they are incompetent while we want them to feel successful?

As you can see in the video, there are times when nobody in the class knows what I’m trying to teach. The elicit helps with 1. The concept 2. Trying to pull the word out if they by chance have seen it before. If they haven’t, I give it to them, drill it and then ccq. However, since my elicit was good, they should know exactly what concept I’m trying to teach them.
Hi Chris, is this considered A-level for teens & adults? I realize A, B, C levels are used in UK education school systems, much like in Asian countries. I'm just trying to see the American equivalent. Some jobs are asking me if I have A-level experience. All these acronyms are like alphabet soup.
What should I do if students don't even know any vocabulary. How can they give me words to guess the action I do in front of the class?

They might not be able to give you the word, but if your elicit is good, they’ll know the concept you are trying to teach. At this point, you will write the word you’re teaching on the board, drill it and then ccq it.
I would love to know what was written on those papersheets which you gave to your students in the first practice!

Awesome
How long are your classes? (time-wise)

These are 45 min, but they can obviously be expanded for 60 min or 90 min classes
What kind of method are you applying?

great
Yes you seem like a good teacher I know nothing about teaching. However it seems to me that when you're teaching the word ski aren't you confusing them by saying to ski? And keep putting the word to in front of the object? Like the winter instead of just winter?
I like it too
what country are they from?
❤😊
Naočkoval bych denně hodinu Duolingo a dvoujjazyčnou knihu. Kdo nemá vůli, potřebuje hl. motivátora, a až poté native speakera. Do urovně B je imitace native učitelů, kdy AJ má několik native stylů ... (I actually sail in winter, too ) overkillem.
quick question: is it a good idea for students to compare their work before checking the exercise with the whole class?
@TheLanguageHouseTEFL
Жыл бұрын
Having peers check their work is not a bad idea. I usually have students work in pairs/groups anyway during the majority of written tasks.
I wonder why he writes a word on the board before he drills it?
👍
\o/ The fall ! \o/
Good! = I give up! Say it however you wanna say it.
Why didn't he teach the seasons the correct order. Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter.
@TheLanguageHouseTEFL
Жыл бұрын
In retrospect, it would have been better to order them in their correct order, but I wanted to first teach the language that I thought would be the easiest for them. Most beginners have an understanding of Winter and Summer, so I wanted to hit those first before moving into language that would be more difficult.
I like to ride a bike?
You can never drill too much= okay, let's spend 60 minutes drilling a pronunciation of a certain word.
I’m already annoyed and it’s been 1 minute
This class is very confusing ..

A lot of it is the editing + sound + camera I’ll try to make some better demo videos in the future
is he trying to teach the words they already know?? Is this a joke?
You insist the person should come up with a good pronunciation but the person comes up with the shittiest pronunciation ever and yet you say "good!!! perfect!!!!" What the hell?!?!?
