How to Teach English to Beginners: Teaching Vocabulary Tips
Teaching beginners is a lot of fun that every ESL teacher should experience. In this video, we cover how to teach and present vocabulary (lexis) to the beginner level.
Welcome back to my series on teaching English to beginners. This is the second video in the series. If you missed video #1, do check that out here
Part 1: Fundamentals - • How to Teach Beginners...
Part 3: Planning a lesson - • How to Teach English t...
Part 4: Teaching grammar • Teaching Grammar to Be...
Teaching vocab to beginners is actually quite easy (and fun) if you know what you are doing. We start the video with some general tips:
1. Decide what language you want to teach and make sure this language gets used throughout the lesson
2. Teach your language in clumps based on parts of speech
3. Color code all of your words
4. Write/board your language for them correctly
5. Find a logical order to teach the vocabulary
6. Remember to elicit everything and stick with visual elicits: props, realia, pictures, drawing, and miming
After that, we cover the actual steps needed to teach vocabulary effectively. You're going to want to elicit your word, board your word, drill your word (8x), and then CCQ your word. At the very end of your presentation, do a rapid-fire check of all of your words before moving on.
The biggest piece of advice is to keep your TTT low - don't speak. You're also going to want to drill a lot, and finally, move slowly through the entire presentation.

Hello Chris! Thank you so much for your videos, they have helped me a lot I really like your content. Chris is it possible to make some videos about how to teach Intermediate and Advanced(some tips), please? Also more about making videos demo having students in the classroom like some of your previous videos longtime ago, I will really appreciate that. Thank you.

Hi Chris - it would be so great if you could make a video about "How to teach beginners with less material" --> I'm teaching at a class in Madagascar and we have almost zero material. We have a blackboard and chalk and every student has two notebooks (not laptops, I mean the ones out of paper:-)) and pens. No grammar book, no work book, no "new" media, no dictionary etc. I'm teaching children age 12-14.

I'm going to start teaching a beginner tomorrow she doesn't speak English. I was nervous but after watching your videos, i believe I can do it. Thanks very much Chris
I really want to teach ESL adults online, but even after many years of teaching English in the US, I lacked confidence because I knew that teaching ESL's was going to be different. You are showing me what it looks like and how to do it, and my confidence grows every time I watch one of your videos. Thank you!

Great video! I come often for the tips, but also for encouragement. When the classes don't run smoothly, I come back and rewatch the videos to strengthen my skill set, and also for the energy and joy you show.
Once again. This is helping me tremendously. Glad I found part 2. Keep them coming. You are saving me!!!!
Such a relief to hear this! your experience and energy has helped me to overcome a breakdown I had after last week classes, I just got stuck with lesson planning that week after almost a year of teaching. Thank you so much, this was so refreshing to go over the basics again! Your channel is a must for tutors ❤

Quality content! Good job!
This is definitely the best way for learning how to actually teach effectively and in a fun way this universal language! I will certainly be taking the course in Prague maybe in 1 year or in 1 and a half! Also, I was wondering if there was a possibility to take it online and besides learning a lot, getting the certification considering the fact I can't travel for now? I'd like more information like in a videocall about it)
This was a really useful video. I gained a lot of valuable insights from it. Thank you so much!
Thank you sir! Seriously!
Your videos are so helpful! Thank you. Can you cover how to determine their appropriate class level and if it's okay to enroll students to an existing class that you've been teaching for awhile

Great video, as always. You speak on a 98% native level, and you are a notch better than the native teachers in that you know how learning English is as a SECOND language (from students' point of view) while they (native teachers) don't.
Groovy, Chris. Groovy.
thank you Chris
You are correct...very few of us walk into a class of true beginners. Esp with students who do not know English alohabet😮
Thanks 😌😍👍
Identifying what part of speech on the white board is EPIC! Thanks you so much great videos.

dear chris, I believe you have mentioned in one of your videos that for the beginner students we can not use variety of vocabulary at once, in order not to get confused, for instance, the vocabulary ( BUY) should be used till the end of class (no get, not purchase ) but in this video as of example you have tried to teach the verb ( wear, and get dressed) which are the same literally, therefore dont you think that you have kindly ignored the rule? by the way your an amazing English teacher. Thank you
🎉thank you

I'm from Brazil and I live in Japan, and I would like to teach English here.
This is really helpful! I'm learning a lot. But I'm having trouble thinking lessons for beginners. Can you help me with it? I am an Elementary teacher.
Can you make a video that how we should teach writing????
Do you address doing 'eliciting' and 'trailing out' for students who are unable to read and write in their L1? Many of my adult students did not have much or rigourous schooling prior to immigrating to the US. Question. How important is it for the students to have the same colors and switch writing in all the colors? Or are the colors for instruction and maybe posters for students to see during class time?
This sounds elementary but sometimes I will use feelings and our tones. I might say- whisper "a jacket", shout "a jacket", question "a jacket?", etc. This helps with their listening.
I love this video. it's getting closer to my teaching in China 😊😊😊

I want to teach French online, do you have videos on how to be confident in keeping students interested? Thank you
Hi, Chris! I have a question. Is drilling the pronunciation still appropriate to teach adults who are true beginners? I'm afraid they will be bored or even feel that I underestimate their competency as adults. Are there any other fun ways to drill the words for adults? Thanks in advance!
