THE KINDNESS OF STRANGERS (behind the scenes of the Sailing Family Farmers at 16:30) kzread.info/dash/bejne/m3WimNKAqrvfgdY.html To Paul and Sheryl, we were strangers, but these kind people invited us onto their boat, grabbed a camera, and asked, "So what's your story?" Throughout our travels, we've relied on the kindness of strangers like Paul and Sheryl, and in this video (linked above) we share the stories of good people who are kind enough to invite us into their lives and share a bit of life together. Thank you, Distant Shores, for being kind strangers All our best- Sierrah/Morgan

When we saw you docking at Exuma Yacht Club, we couldn’t help but dinghy over and share how much you have meant to us over the years. Who’d a thought farmers from Ohio could make sailing a part of our life? You two were a huge part of inspiring us to make it happen. Thank you for sharing our story - Sierrah and Morgan put a ton of effort into their channel and we’re THRILLED that you include it in this episode. All our best - Dustin/Erin

Hi. I noticed that you had an SV Delos shirt on. Cool! When Paul and Sheryl interviewed Brian and Karin on YT (and visa versa), that's when I found Distant Shores! Also, last October I was able to attend the US Sailboat Show including the presentation made about 59 North. It was booked solid but Brian, personally, found me an open table. And who was sitting at the table one tier higher next to mine, but Paul and Sheryl! I think I'm a very lucky guy! My sailboat is only 20 feet long and not really blue water capable (except in perfect conditions). So I can only dream about off shore sailing. But maybe one day, . . . . Be well, and fair winds to you all! Scott W

S C Yz haha - yeah. My birthday is in November and it was a few weeks before we took off from the farm for The Bahamas. My girls got me the shirt for my birthday. The folks at Delos remind me a lot of Paul and Sheryl - Very approachable and easy to connect with. What’s funny even mire is that Brian and Karin named their daughter Sierra. Our 18yr old daughter is Sierrah! Anyway - Paul and Sheryl have helped us so much through their videos over the years. It was great to spend a moment with them. It’s so nice to know they inspired you as well. This recent video is so full of useful information. I remember talking with Paul and Sheryl about an entry to a tiny spot called Joe’s Sound in Long Island Bahamas... their info on this video is certainly useful for such delicate situations😉 - Dustin

I've mentioned this before, but I have a Paceship P2-20 (made in Nova Scotia, Canada) which I mainly sail on two of the Finger Lakes here in central New York State. The P2-20 has a retractable keel and is easy to trailer to one boat launch or another. As a 20 footer my boat isn't really blue water capable but I still love watching and listening to your videos. It could be that one day I will find a bigger boat and have to re-watch your vids so I can learn about how to sail in the Caribbean! Scott W

Hey, we are the family at the end of the video. We ended up sailing the Bahamas using less money than the average family's week-long vacation to Disneyland.

Would a camera on the mast looking down help read the water better than the low angle of a cockpit?

Greetings from the UK. Come and Sail the Solent one day? Qu. @13mins. How did you navigate through WP2-3-4 ; did use use a fix via a back or front bearing to know when to make turns or just the electronic chart position ? There didn’t seem to be any useful markers to take bearings on? Thx in advance.

Hey- a question- is it possible to mount a camera on the top of the mast for shallow water piloting?

  • @scoobiedoo2009

Absolutely - check out the options from Raymarine/Flir which can be mast-mounted and provide a visual feed directly to your multi-function display - I installed a similar system to a friend's yacht last year and it's great for helm information when your crew is picking up a mooring buoy!

In those waters a camera at the keel would do the trick.

Nice anchor, but the snubber, does it work ?

  • @DistantShoresTV

Thanks for your question. We have used snubbers on our anchor for all the years we've been sailing and it does prevent the chain from jerking and straining the anchor.

This segment should be called "Passage plan". 4 minutes out of 21 some family talking about how excited they are to grow food (like anyone asked them to make excuses for their occupation)does not count as "Sail Away on a Budget". They make money 8 months and spend 4 months on a boat - show me your excel spread sheet with accounting of your trip. Than I'll tell you if it's on the budget, cause everyone's budget is different.
