I think Sartael was meant to be humorous right near the end, after he threatens the peasants with eternal damnation if they tried to stop him... only to *immediately* hit the bear trap again, and they descend on him to beat him with their farm implements.

So actually as a basque myself, I was totally unaware of this folktale, which could simply be down to the fact that I'm from the french side of the basque country which is far less steeped in traditional culture than the Spanish side. In terms of cool facts, Basque is one of the worlds oldest languages but because it was only recently unified and codified (in 1968) every small town and valley had its own version. In this film, with the help of a famous basque linguist, they actually spoke in an old dialect that would have been used in that specific part of the Basque Country during that time period but that has essentially disappeared. So yeah, I'd say watching a dubbed version is definitely removing something from the film. I havent seen this yet, but as for basque cinema in general, I'd say it's heavily influenced by spirituality and the mix between christianity and traditional paganisme. Basques were converted quite late (16th century) so much like you'll find in South America, Catholicism in the Basque Country is this weird hybrid of traditional Christianity with strange folklore and superstition. A lot of Basque cinema taps into that internal conflict between the church (which generally symbolizes spanish patriarchy and thus the 'colonization' of the basque country by the spanish) and pagan tradition (with more matriarcal undertones of nature and witchcraft). Anyways, since you guys enjoyed this, I'd recommend you check out some of Alex de la Iglesia's films (who's a producer on this) and are in a similar vein and tone, particularly "Dia de la Bestia", "La balada trista" and "las brujas de zugarramurdi" (beautifully titled "Witching and Bitching" in the US). I'd also HEAVILY recommend watching "The Spirit of the Beehive" by Victor Erice, not specifically related to the Basque Country but by a Basque filmmaker. You guys mentioned Del Toro and "Pan's Labyrinth", I think after watching it it'll be pretty clear that GDelT has a major hard on for that film. Anyways, as always great review guys !

Do you know some historical films in basque language or films about basque culture in general? Greetings from Russia. I find basque language really fascinating, it's like a mix of hungarian and georgian.

@@ilya_rusin In historical movies Akelarre (or Coven) came out in 2020 if you haven't seen it, and the same director as Errementari came out with a short film "Dar dar", not really historical but still very cool ! Its kind of hard to find historical things other than documentaries about basque culture, which is too bad, because our story is rich and our language is growing :) Im hopeful for more basque films in the future :))

The chick pea thing is similar to the mustard(?) seed thing with vampires. The most recent depiction of this is in Dracula 2000 with Gerard Butler (though he is the all powerful Dracula and overcomes the challenge almost instantaneously). I don’t completely understand it myself, but I got made that connection while watching Errementari last night. Folklore is fun!

Thank you for this very interesting critique of a film I absolutely loved, and loved seeing my language and my culture and history on screen :) The chickpea thing is something I've heard in a couple of old basque tales, but like, these are told, never written...so yeah I guess it is something typically from here? Milesker !

Totally agree on dubs. I hate some of the weird voice they attach to a character that will sound nothing like that. Give my subtitles and emotion that connects to the actor.

This movie is a comedy, right? I mean, I liked it, but there's no way the Rambo Blacksmith and Sartael were to be taken seriously. I don't think the Blacksmith is at all a good person. No good person does the terrible things he does, rage or no rage. He tries to burn a child alive, and if anything, that would point out to how inhuman he was. Christianity is also (rightfully so) portrayed as inhuman and evil. It's interesting to see that both Sartael and the priest say the same thing about the Usue's mother and that there's no getting out of Hell. Usue was being horribly bullied and she did nothing bad to the boys and the girls, certainly much less than they deserved for how they treated her. And are you a Christian? And making a pact with the devil in that situation is not at all indication that the girl is evil. She is just a little girl who wants to be reunited with her mother. Saying she's evil because of that is typical of Christian inhumanity.

I think the counting of the chickpeas were based off the fairies or pixies that have to count beans that are thrown onto the ground before them. Maybe even from Supernatural because that’s where the counting came from that I know of

It's from folklore. Several evil beings are compelled to count grain. It's one of the many funny anti-monster resources people came up with to protect themselves against them.
