Erosion of Californian cliffs is causing homes to crumble away

Thousands of people residing on the cliff edges in southern California have been told leave their homes as the ground underneath is giving way, but some say they want to stay. James Vasina has the latest from Pacifica.

That's what they get for hogging all of the waterfront areas! If you simply walk or drive by their houses they would scream "Private properties, get out!" Well, don't ask for my tax dollars to bail you mofos out in dealing with your own "private properties!"

Same on the beach in some other states even where the citizens own the beach. Old deeds still show some owners have beach rights to high tide or to low tide but at low low tide they still yell. Some beach goers are native indian and can go on those properties at the beach.

@@alexgibbs356 that's been my experience too. I lived near many beaches and nobody ever drove by and was yelled at. I have seen people get yelled at walking on a private beach however. If you live around the beach you can literally find what each individual property line goes to and then find the laws and match them up and then find where the tide lines are and you'll be fine. The problem is sometimes people leave trash or disturb the wildlife and that's why hey get mad or something wrong in the head. So of someone is yelling they might be right but they could be wrong too. Depends on many factors.

People build homes in all sorts of places. Look at Florida where in many cases people can't even have a basement to their house because if they dig too deep they'll hit water. Still people build homes. Or people bnuilding homes in what is called Tornado Alley. I'm thinking You must be nuts to live there but people do. Or, the people living in close proximity to vulcanoes as we just saw this week in the Phillippines. People see a volcano and think: yes, let's build here ... Humans never cease to amaze me.

Not just California. It's a global occurrence some coastal regions it's happening faster than others depending on the makeup of the coast. Skip back 30-50 years it was just storm surges that caused erosion but the sand would wash back and be deposited on the beaches after a few months or maybe a year. In the last 10 years it has been just a constant scouring of beaches and fore dunes and not just be storm surges it's now happening with every king tide event. Some local beachs in Australia have seen dry sand beaches that were 60-100 between fore dune and high water mark gone to the point that fore and back dunes disappear over the last 10 years and last year 2020, this as accelerated 80-120 meters gone. none of this lost sand has washed up on any neighboring beaches. The sands have washed out well beyond the surf zones where sand bars normally formed. near shore zones frequently now just have deep gutters that seem to facilitate the flushing away of eroded beach and dune sand.

The entire city of Pacifica is built on sand deposits that were once sea bottom. The area, which is not far from where the San Andreas Fault runs under the sea across the Golden Gate, was uplifted by earthquake action and now the Pacific Ocean is taking it back. The people who live on the sand should know by now that they don't have a chance of stopping the ocean, but some of them are the epitome of hubris. The person who wrote the caption should have looked at a map. Pacifica is just south of San Francisco. It is no where near to Southern California.

Mountains all over the planet are decaying as well. Climate change, plus melting icebergs means worldwide sea levels will keep rising. All this is causing changed weather patterns, bringing stronger storms to beat against what we thought was solid ground. Has humanity sped up this process? I believe so. Will humanity go extinct? Only if they keep being stupid. Even the caveman survived the ice age. The difference between now and then is that humankind depends on computers to make a living. We need to start refining our knowledge of working the land, growing crops, etc. In my opinion, it is the humble migrant worker who has the best chance of feeding themselves and surviving. Mr. Richie Rich will not get nourishment from money, fine art or shiny baubles. His pretty golden coins won’t be enough to buy labor when money means nothing. Who will trade their last leg of lamb for a piece of gold? The humble humans with dirt under their nails will continue. And the cycle will start all over again. I did not expect to see the cycle change occurring in my lifetime, nor the lifetimes of the children I love. Just like the Greeks, Romans, Chinese Dynasties, Egyptian Dynasties, etc. the great nations of today will crumble/are crumbling. We’ve been warned about pride and building our lives on sandy foundations. Yet, we have learned nothing.

The solution is simple enough, but property owners want someone else to foot the bill... Spray gunnite on the cliff, and the erosion will be halted. This erosion has nothing to do with climate change. This is just what water does.

@@JCrow-kz4nw I am not certain of that. Sea level is temperature related, and the water temperature in Pacifica is low. Gunnite is the premium material for making swimming pools. Those areas of Pacifica where homeowners paid for this kind of intervention, are not experiencing erosion, and are probably good for 30-50 years. The erosion problem is nothing new here. It happens every winter.

@@richdelgado3405 The evidence is clear. Yes, gunnite works in this application. We are not losing coastline in net. Sand moves in a storm. Gunnite constrains that movement. It's not magic. It's engineering, and applied physics.

The odd question about land management and erosion is an age old never ending battle for the Americans. Completely different from how the Japanese and other Asian industrial countries have taken over shoring up the shorelines to prevent it. In the case of land erosion due to high surf and the earth sediment that account for the cliffs to slowly reach this point. A concrete barrier made up of of those triangulation mounded forms firmly placed between the existing land and shoreline , the barrier should have been erected then built up by a land fill which would reach the eroding cliffs then pilons driven deep into the land to support it from continuing erosion, then layered like a trench like stair steps up to the leveled ground above: terra-forming. But, like most there, government oversight plays heavily into conservation efforts. So, nothing ever happens. Nothing changes what exists already and the land and property like places in Russia or elsewhere simply disappear with the gradual loss of land to the oceans. Land conservation takes funding which, nobody is willing to pay any amount regardless of the eventual end results. Just property.

I can't feel sorry for any person that this happened to. Common sense tells you that every time storms and waves hits a hillside and mountain it erodes. If the idiots want to waste their funds that's them. That is not something the any government body should spend money on knowing this from get go. Earth science 101. Elementary school teaches you this.
