Landslide leaves California mansions teetering on cliff’s edge

Officials said they're closely monitoring the situation, as some fear more rain this week could send them into the ocean.

Not necessarily. It’s the soil that’s the problem. In my country you have this type of soil and nobody builds houses there. However, if it solid rock where you have to blast and get hammers to dig foundation, is perfectly safe. Building on a cliff side with clay and sand soil, now that is crazy.

No, it isn't. Eventually, it will turn into sandstone and limestone...if it hasn't all washed away first. It's sand with some pebbles and a small amount of dirt...sand dunes. The other week, I watched a video about another place they built on top of sand dunes. But they messed up big time, and the ocean washed most of it away, and the town they built went away. Lost two hundred feet of height before it was over. Also the west coast, but it was either Washington or Oregon. Washington, I think.

The homes are nice, but that's extremely too close for my comfort being that the home is near a cliff/hillside, and it's already known history and (high) possibilities of more landslides. But they knew the risks. That's why the property/home insurance companies wouldn't risk providing coverage(s). So why should anyone else have optimism for the homes/property? Again, they took the risks for isolation, exclusivity, and for the oceanview scenery - on and near a cliff.

We've known for decades that hills near the ocean are unstable. Yet we still see them building on them. San Clemente Beach has had signs telling people not to stand on the edge of cliffs because the sandstone is not stable - these signs have been there for decades. We've had these problems up and down the coast for years. And I'm getting tired of hearing this is climate change. It's not. Southern California has her wet years that slowly become dry years and then again return to wet years. When I was growing up, we saw Malibu flooding badly for a set of 5 or so years, and each year, the residents acted like that each year was a surprise. What the problem really is? Poor planning. You don't build on historically unstable hills and in flood zones. You fix what's been eroding, and you build for the wet years and fires. And as erosion happens, you build new ditches to divert the water better and shore up the hills that are falling. You don't wait until the areas have eroded and flood more often due to geological changes and then blame climate change because you decided it wasn't worth fixing.

So those who purchased homes on the cliff with the beautiful view, knew going in that it is a temporary home. In fact, these homes should be non-insurable. Owners should be forced to pay cash for the home or show proof of self-insurance. It's a temporary, beautiful view, then it's gone! Get over it...
