Ernie Ball MusicMan DarkRay Full Demo

The Ernie Ball Music Man Darkray is an unprecedented collaboration between Ernie Ball and Darkglass Electronics that puts the tone and character of two Darkglass drive circuits in the onboard electronics of the mighty Stingray Special.
The DarkRay has all the appointments of the Stingray Special and adds a preamp custom designed by the brains behind some of the most layered and iconic sounds of modern bass. This would be newsworthy on its own, but the Darkray goes a step further by adding two selectable drive circuits to the onboard preamp.
People. There are. Two drive pedals. In this bass.
The unmistakable American punch of the Stingray pairs outstandingly with a drive circuit, so the good folks over at Darkglass Electronics lifted the Alpha and Omega drives from their standout Alpha Omega series and dropped them into the sleek physique of the Stingray.
Stop reading this and listen to this thing.
Strings: D'addario NYXL
Preamp: Noble Bass Pre

    I would play the heck out of that, in fact that would be a dream bass for me if only they didn't leave out a mid knob. and honestly, on a bass, I would take a mid knob over the other two, as mids are extremely important for being heard in a mix. I wonder if they intended for the distortion to be what helps you cut through. I would really like to hear this in a live setting.

    I heard Geddy Lee tried Stingrays according to one of his bass techs Russ Ryan (joined Rush in the later years of touring) which he said they're good but wasn't enough to impress him, probably because of personal preference and it reminded him of his Wal I guess, might have sounded thin to him since he was still looking for his own tone, he's more into the Rickenbacker neck sound he was after switching to his 1972 Fender Jazz bass and his Tech21 gear helped him to emulate that. Imagine someone gave him this instead, especially with that distortion setting! The setting to my ears is kinda close to his Tech21 gear particularly the YYZ pedal with those distortion settings!

    The problem with putting onboard drive is that it puts it first in your effects chain which isn't usually where you want fuzz and overdrive. It's fun, but I don't see this catching on.

  • @AmosHeller

    It’s not for everyone, and there are situations where a pedal is a better solution. As I said in the video, if you rock a dirty tone all night and don’t need a clean line this could stand in for a pedalboard altogether. I found it to be a lot of fun, and it made me realize how much of a chore reaching down to tweak pedal settings can be.

  • @AmosHeller

    @AmosHeller

    3 жыл бұрын

    Good question. It depends! As I said in the vid, if you get a gritty sound and use it all night, this might let you skip the pedalboard. OR have on-hand drive options to fill out a variety of sounds. The sculpting ability is limited-drive and blend aren’t a TON of control over a drive sound, and there is no mid control. Like anything, I guess it depends how you want to use it.

    The concept is interesting and you got some sweet tones out of it but how easy to activate / deactivate the tone? I have a Stingray 5 special and love it. And yea, the tuners are great and being lighter there's no neck dive really. The downside I see on this one though... With an onboard pedal, I can't disgust my guitar player with another pedal on my board that he calls "an abomination" lol. I add pedals to it just to stress him out haha. Btw... I really dig your reviews. Good usable info and tasty licks to go with it. I picked up the Alpha Omega Ultra and Microtubes X pedals based on your reviews. It was good to hear them in other styles other than driving rock or metal. They deliver today. Can't wait to add them to the "Abomination" haha.

    It’s honesty harder to do quick switches than having a pedal (for obvious reasons). But the switch is easy to grab and has solid movement. But yeah, you can’t horrify guitar players with it as easily. Big downside. :) Glad you like the reviews And thanks for stopping by!
