Ernie Ball MusicMan DarkRay Full Demo
The Ernie Ball Music Man Darkray is an unprecedented collaboration between Ernie Ball and Darkglass Electronics that puts the tone and character of two Darkglass drive circuits in the onboard electronics of the mighty Stingray Special.
The DarkRay has all the appointments of the Stingray Special and adds a preamp custom designed by the brains behind some of the most layered and iconic sounds of modern bass. This would be newsworthy on its own, but the Darkray goes a step further by adding two selectable drive circuits to the onboard preamp.
People. There are. Two drive pedals. In this bass.
The unmistakable American punch of the Stingray pairs outstandingly with a drive circuit, so the good folks over at Darkglass Electronics lifted the Alpha and Omega drives from their standout Alpha Omega series and dropped them into the sleek physique of the Stingray.
Stop reading this and listen to this thing.

Omg!!!Ben stiller on bass!!!!!
You can hear the Flea Tone in there. It's also nice that you can hear that big bass tone under the effects.

Best demo so far for this badass DarkRay, impressive.
Your playing was outstanding. Video and sound quality top shelf. Subbed. EB & Darkglass together makes for a cool bass. Without seeming like a gimmick.
Thanks, i love your musical style, good overview, not long winded, not too short, again like your style, many thanks!

Aye! Lovely
Tim Commerford tone right there.
I would play the heck out of that, in fact that would be a dream bass for me if only they didn't leave out a mid knob. and honestly, on a bass, I would take a mid knob over the other two, as mids are extremely important for being heard in a mix. I wonder if they intended for the distortion to be what helps you cut through. I would really like to hear this in a live setting.
Este es el mejor demo de esa colaboración entre Ernie Ball y Darkglass... Lastima que no le colocaste opción de subtítulos

I’ll try to address that in the future! Thank you for mentioning it.
This is one of the reasons I need to stay away from Amos Heller's demo vids, he's so good at them and makes everything sound so great, that I'm all like "I need to take a serious look at this thing", even though I have zero desire for another StingRay-esque bass. This thing sounds pretty good, and the on-screen graphics were awesome! Unfortunately, I gotta keep watching his demos, they're just so good. DARN YOU, AMOS HELLER, AND YOUR EXCELLENT DEMO VIDS!! ;-)

What's the Meguiars product on the amp at about 2:10? Y'all using that to get fingerprints off for the b-roll?
As soon as I started watching this I was thinking to myself "Has Tim Comerford felt a disturbance in the force?". Later in the video, the planets seemed to align themselves 😆 guess what one of the main reasons for me playing a Stingray is? Great video, let's hope I can find enough pennies down the back of the sofa to purchase one of these mentalist noise generators. Thanks my friend, new subscriber incoming 👍

Great video as always, Amos. If the bass sounded like my B7K, I would dig it. To me, Stingrays need a jazz neck pickup. Lows are in the wrong sonic spot for me.
Hi! Do u think the dark ray is a good bass in order to play new wave style of Music? Joy Division or Interpol genre?
Only wish they would have kept a the 3 band could have had a stack knob it’s so cool they worked with musicman, “ my favorite bass company “ they could have easily went with the Dingwall again, there’s nothing like a stingray special! I’ve owned 4 and still have two can’t have enough of them!! GET ONE! Lol
Joe Dart needs one for more versatility. Love your videos Amos

@AmosHeller
3 жыл бұрын
Ha! I know what you mean. We’re way beyond “need” out here...
Very cool option for people who hate pedalboards :) The only thing that is lacking is an option to blend fuzz and distortion like on alpha-omicron pedal for example
@AmosHeller
3 жыл бұрын
Yeah-it’s one or the other here. I like them both but when I use AO drives I tend to like them in the middle.
I heard Geddy Lee tried Stingrays according to one of his bass techs Russ Ryan (joined Rush in the later years of touring) which he said they're good but wasn't enough to impress him, probably because of personal preference and it reminded him of his Wal I guess, might have sounded thin to him since he was still looking for his own tone, he's more into the Rickenbacker neck sound he was after switching to his 1972 Fender Jazz bass and his Tech21 gear helped him to emulate that. Imagine someone gave him this instead, especially with that distortion setting! The setting to my ears is kinda close to his Tech21 gear particularly the YYZ pedal with those distortion settings!
game changer
The problem with putting onboard drive is that it puts it first in your effects chain which isn't usually where you want fuzz and overdrive. It's fun, but I don't see this catching on.
@AmosHeller
3 жыл бұрын
It’s not for everyone, and there are situations where a pedal is a better solution. As I said in the video, if you rock a dirty tone all night and don’t need a clean line this could stand in for a pedalboard altogether. I found it to be a lot of fun, and it made me realize how much of a chore reaching down to tweak pedal settings can be.
After this intro i bought a bass

Are the active eq’s still available when the Darkglass circuits are bypassed? Great demo, thanks.
@AmosHeller
3 жыл бұрын
Yes. The “first” position of the selector switch (light off) is clean but with the EQ still active.
Great video, I really like the tone with subtle grit added. I’m wondering though, is there much of a reason to buy this bass over a regular ray with a 3 band and a dark glass pedal?
@AmosHeller
3 жыл бұрын
Good question. It depends! As I said in the vid, if you get a gritty sound and use it all night, this might let you skip the pedalboard. OR have on-hand drive options to fill out a variety of sounds. The sculpting ability is limited-drive and blend aren’t a TON of control over a drive sound, and there is no mid control. Like anything, I guess it depends how you want to use it.
@notoriouszeb3337

Good point, especially because a lot of people (me included) like to put a compressor in front of distortion/overdrive pedals, especially in recording scenarios . I really dig the DarkRay, but I’ll stick to my classic sting

Amos, what would you think about someone getting this as their first Stingray? I love distortion/fuzz on bass, but I worry I'd miss that good ol' mid knob. I mean, I know that a Stringray Special is a different beast than the "classic" Stingray, anyway, but I'm guessing the Special gets one closer to that Stingray sound than the DarkRay...? Thanks for such an amazing video and review!

The concept is interesting and you got some sweet tones out of it but how easy to activate / deactivate the tone? I have a Stingray 5 special and love it. And yea, the tuners are great and being lighter there's no neck dive really. The downside I see on this one though... With an onboard pedal, I can't disgust my guitar player with another pedal on my board that he calls "an abomination" lol. I add pedals to it just to stress him out haha. Btw... I really dig your reviews. Good usable info and tasty licks to go with it. I picked up the Alpha Omega Ultra and Microtubes X pedals based on your reviews. It was good to hear them in other styles other than driving rock or metal. They deliver today. Can't wait to add them to the "Abomination" haha.

It’s honesty harder to do quick switches than having a pedal (for obvious reasons). But the switch is easy to grab and has solid movement. But yeah, you can’t horrify guitar players with it as easily. Big downside. :) Glad you like the reviews And thanks for stopping by!
