Ernie Ball Music Man Tim Commerford Artist Series Bass (Short-scale Passive Version)

Today we bomb tracks, parade the bulls and know our enemies. The Tim Commerford Artist Series Basses from Ernie Ball sport upgrades and bespoke touches all over the place and have more than one surprise up their collective sleeve.
The full line includes four basses, long and short in scale, active and passive in operation. This video covers the short-scale passive version, perhaps the most surprising of the iterations. We put it through the paces! We make bass faces!

    It's so exciting to see EB recognise Tim Commerford as a stingray player. The only thing I wish they made was a natural long scale ray with a normal maple neck, like the one he played back in the day. But I get that the one they made is a blend of his current bass choices and his old bass. This demo is also fantastic as always! I think your fingers are what makes these basses sound so good.

    Tim Commerford is my Cousin and He was 6 foot at 12 Years old. He was very loud back then. One time We almost got killed by a Train because We got stranded on the Railroad Track and He was yelling at me so loud I didn't hear the Train coming. Luckily some men push the car I was driving us in off the Track.

    @@AmosHeller For me, it's entirely a plus. I don't like active systems a whole lot, and the passive stingray just sounds tasty. I really hope they come out with more main line (read: less expensive) passive Stingrays.

    Great review. I dig the features but am not sure about short scale. Is there a point where a short scale is a good practical choice over a full scale? Loved the tones you got with it and I really dig the adjustable mutes. I can see a few handy applications for that.

  • @AmosHeller

    @AmosHeller

    Thanks! As far as short vs. standard scale, it comes down to a feel thing. For this one, it actually didn’t feel like a tremendous advantage, and for basses voiced like this I typically prefer standard scale. It did make me approach the bass a little differently and I always value an aspect that’s a little unexpected.

    Now that Sterling has a version of this, I could see myself getting one and replacing the passive boost with a volume/tone bypass. I never considered adding that feature to a bass until I discovered that a bass I bought had this, and now it's something I would put on all my passive basses. I would probably also try to find something to do other than series mode, because I really just don't quite like it... I also wonder if the Sterling would convert easily to long scale.

    Well, let's see... you can go to the forest and chop down a tree with a stone axe, mine your own iron ore, carve that tree with sharp rocks to a bass body, build a blast furnace or kilns (after you make your charcoal) in your back yard and get some steel going for the hardware, grind and shape all that with stone tools, and put all of your fabricated parts together without any tools to make one hell of a bass, I'm sure. Or you can be a "capitalist" and pay a company to do all that for you. Or did you just want that bass for free?
