Ercoupe Back Country Flying

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

A flight in a 1948 Ercoupe, from Nevada County Airport to Dead Cow Dry Lake bed. After flying over the Sierra Nevada mountain range, this lake bed in Nevada was my first off-airport landing.

My uncle has an Ercoupe, it hasn't had an annual in 15+ years, so now it's like a "barn find" airplane. I've only seen it once about 20 years ago.

I had Ercoupe N 87101 415 C that I flew for ten years back in the late 70's and 80's. Kids came along so I sold it and before you know it your kids are grown and gone and you find you can no longer pass the FAA physical due to minor heart attack fixed with stints but have high blood pressure. Enjoy flying while you can because some day you'll find you will have to let it go.

I live close to where the Ercoupe factory used to be. Maryland pride baby! Great video, much respect from a fellow pilot of a vintage aircraft (1947 Luscombe 8E). Love these classic planes.

Hello again, James. Continuing to enjoy your videos. A question if I may? After our previous discussion. I purchased a couple of GoPro Hero 3+ Black cameras for use in my Grumman Lynx. However, the video quality is a million miles from you manage to achieve here. The videos are washed out with poor contrast and color and quite "noisy". Would you be so generous as to let me know the precise settings you use for your camera in order that I can try and duplicate? I appreciate your help. Many thanks and best regards.

Hello again James, I like this video because I want to attend next years High Sierra Fly In at Dead Cow Dry Lake. How did you find it? I've been looking on WingX but can't see it. May I ask what engine and carburetor you have in your Ercoupe? There's still time for more good fall weather flying so I hope you make more videos soon, CHEERS, Mate, Kenny

Thanks, Kenny. I hope to attend it next year too. I didn't go this year, the weather wasn't quite to my liking over the mountains on Saturday. On the charts, the lake bed is a small white dotted area between Herlong and Pyramid Lake. I have an O-200, and a Marvel Schebler MA3-SPA carb.

OK, that splanes it. I saw you have a Vernier Mixture control, so I was sure it was not a Stromberg. I have a Don's Dream Machine 85hp and I just added Marvel Schebler same as yours but modified and STCd to fit on my engine. Next I want to also add a Vernier control like yours but I think I need to find some paper work from one that has already been field approved. I'm sure it won't be too hard. I'm hoping that the new carburetor will help with my performance especially with climb and altitude by being able to lean it much better. My Coupe is LSA, so on O-200 won't work. Your performance in the mountains looks great I hope I can get close. Thanks again Buddy for your generous answers. CHEERS, Kenny

A Vernier control works great on the Schebler... Got one on my C-140 with an 85. I beat everyone on our trip to Oshkosh with the West Coast 120-140 club way back in 1982 at every gas stop, getting at least 1 gph better than the closest member of the flight... almost everyone had their Scheblers wired full rich !!!! Not a good prospect for crossing the rockies at 9000 ft minimum altitude. Some were dragging their tails at that altitude...lol. Install that Vernier and fly lean of peak... listen to Mike Busch and save money and engine... All the Best !

Hi James, Let me start by saying that I like your videos, and I love flying just like you which brings me to not a comment, but a question that I hope you can answer it. I am interesting on buying an ercoupe but I am not sure about the cost per year to maintain it and fly it. If you do not mind sharing that information, I will really appreciate it. Thanks

  • @JamesGood

Ooo, that's a very difficult question to properly answer. For me, on a good year, I might get away with a $1000 annual inspection, oil changes, plugs etc. On a bad year, that could be $2-5000. And you will have bad years.... Flying about 100 hours a year, is going to cost $3500 in fuel and oil. Insurance for me, is about $500 a year. And then there's hangarage, which is totally dependent on where you are. Or just leave it outside, and accept the risks of damage or corrosion. And any engine over 1000 hours, you're going to have to start thinking about engine overhaul, which could be $20-30K. If you're lucky, you might also get another 1000 hours out of it. Most of the value of these machines is in the engine, as weird as that is. By far the most expensive part.

James, Great job on your videos. I am also an Ercoupe owner in SoCal 415-C. I think your coupe is beautiful. Mine was but it needs attention now. Do you attend any of the Ercoupe fly ins? I'm looking forward to getting back in the air and want to find people to fly places with. I have family in Auburn so I do plan to fly to that area. I have many questions about your plane but I'll save them for a later time. CHEERS, Mate and please keep up the videos.... Kenny .

Thanks for the nice comments. I plan to attend some Ercoupe fly-in's. The two I was going to this year were cancelled due to fires. :( Be good to meet your coupe, let me know if you make it to Auburn, that's 12 minutes away by Ercoupe!
