OMG, OMG! "I just want to say 'was.'" How much simpler can the question be. The "useful trick" summary was what I needed most. If I can remember nothing more than this, I'm sure I'll get it right most of the time. Thanks for such a great explanation.
i’ve been watching videos for hours to pass my exam, and this is the one that really helped

DIOS MIO!!!! MUCHISIMA GRACIAS!!!! I have been living in Mexico for 2 months, and I have been struggling with grasping this concept! I think I finally I understand, and after a little more practice, I will master it! It was bothering me so much that Ir also conjugates to Fui/fue/fuimos...etc. and now I understand the significance!!!
This is awesome! 392 on Duolingo and had no idea about how to differentiate these. Great explanation. Gracias Maestra 👩🏫
Esto fue muy util. Muchas gracias!
This channel just seems like jackpot to me sort story was incredibly awesome. It immediately clarified the difference. Simply wow
You have a knack for bringing understanding to people. Very well done and well stated!

Saludos.
Very helpful lesson. Thank you.
Crystal clear explanation. Kudos for that! Many thanks!

Maria, I am so happy to have found you. You do such a great job at explaining Spanish. Primero, you speak English so well, and even without an accent. I only wish I could ever speak Spanish as well as you speak English.You are so easy to understand. Segundo, you explain the topic very well. Tercera, you provide so many examples and even a story to make your point. Cuarta, you are also so easy to look at and that makes learning fun. lol Yo tambien era profesor, pero de quimica, y ahora soy un hombre viego, de 74 anos, tratando aprender a hablar espanol. Gracias por su ayuda. Jack

Mi papa me ayudaba a hacer mis tareas escolares. Mi papa era alta y siempre llevaba un somrero negro o maron.
Glad that I now know which one to use to describe a barbecue party...
By the fourth time I watched the short story, I was able to totally understand why each instance of fue or era was used!

I've just came back from Menorca, in the Balearics, in Ciutdella they use fue, and the other side of the island they seem to use era, I think the difference is the Castillian and Spanish languages spoken there.

Thank you, I appreciate it! I have a video about Estaba vs Estuvo :)
What Spanish do you speak? From where?
Quick question... how come you conjugate era sometimes and just leave it as it is other times. Same with fue?
This is still tricky for me. I've watched both this video and your Estaba or Estuvo video. In that video you give this example: "El festival de música no estuvo tan bueno como pensé." But then in this video you give the example: "El concierto fue una decepción." Aren't those basically the same thing?
I get really confused - if someone has died, do you refer to them using fue or era? For example, or
@LingoMasterySpanish
You can use both!
Thank you. Wondering why we would say "Estoy feliz" but then say "Era feliz" instead of Estaba Feliz? Why would we switch from Estar to Ser for the past tense?
@LingoMasterySpanish
Hey Lancelot! You can say "Estaba feliz" if you're talking about "feliz" as a temporary emotion. "Estaba feliz pero pasó algo que cambió mi ánimo." - I was happy but something happened that changed my mood. You can say "Era feliz" if you're talking about the deeper concept of "felicidad". Like being happy and satisfied with your life. Hope this is not the case :D
Great lesson unfortunately I can’t find any new ones
Great video, your use of many examples is very useful. Just one question if you happen to ready this comment: "most of the time we use era to describe people in the past" But when do we use fue, for people? For example, "El mesero fue muy agradable con nosotros" is a sentence that i saw somewhere. My Spanish speaking friend said 'fue' sounds better than 'era' in this sentence (but she can't explain why)
@LingoMasterySpanish
Because you're talking about an event that had a start and ending in the past. If you say "El mesero era muy amable con nosotros" sounds like a "but" is coming and you're about to say he's not nice anymore...

@@LingoMasterySpanish Thank you!
The preterite of ser is exactly the same as the preterite of ir. You have to know the context to understand which is meant.
Maybe 'era' is what 'was' in a former 'era" (english word for a general segment of time) and fue is a specific segment of time. I noticed 'ademas' as 'also' instead of tambien. Then realized mas is more so it must mean 'furthermore ' a more formal way of saying it.

Is Spanish still spoken in parts of the Philippines? I haven't encountered it at all there during my several visits, mostly to Luzon. But I know that there are some loan words from Spanish in Tagalog, like 'talon' and 'isla'.

@@LingoMasterySpanish I encountered a waiter who was learning Spanish during my last visit to Angeles (Luzon), who tried to practice it on me, but his Spanish was much weaker than mine. It's not surprising that Spanish has died out in The Philippines. English is much more useful when communicating with neighbouring countries like Malaysia, and even Viet Nam.

Basically, fue is measurable by time and era is not.
I know that in Latin America they only use preterito indefinido! this is true?😮

Maria, I love your videos, the format is so easy to follow, but… lugar and pueblo are listed under objects?? The video would have been perfect if you had included examples of fue for actions and things that happened during a specific period of time, but as it is there are only examples of events. I nearly never discovered you because when I was scrolling down the list of videos and I saw the blond wig, I thought the quality of the content would be equally as tacky.
