ERA R4D with Mac Hulbert

Mac Hulbert owned, and raced, ERA R4D from 2001-15.
He was at Prescott Historique, alongside the famous racecar, and discussed with Chris Drewett what the car was like to drive.
Prescott Historique is an event at the Bugatti Owners' Club venue, just outside Cheltenham, celebrating historic cars from the early 1900s right up to the end of the century.
See www.prescotthi... for the latest information on events at Prescott, including the next edition of Prescott Historique.

I knew that the car now use a 2 litre engine instead of the 1.5L ones it used in period, and it also produces way more power now than it had in period, but 162mph, thats a serious amount of speed. It also gives a good idea on how fast these cars were back in the day. Louis Chiron, driving a 2.9L, 255BHP Alfa Romeo P3 at a race in 1934, was once timed doing 169 mph! Anyway, back to the R4D. Im pretty sure I read an article somewhere of the car being tested by the late Tony Merrick at Donington after repairing it in the 1990s. He confounded some British Formula 3 drivers (or Formula 2, I can't remember) who were also testing their cars there, as the drivers cant find a way past R4D. They would gain under braking and in the corners, but the ERA would just leave them standing under acceleration!

I saw Mac & R4D many times at many venues over the years. It's good to see that both are still going well. 😎

Great car! I remember when Peter Brewer had the car and it was painted blue and white. I don't think Ray would have been too impressed!

Just look at what chaps did at Brooklands. Race car speeds haven't changed drastically in 90 years
