Hi no vnm. Don't worry, we get asked this question a lot. The major differences are in the functionality. A dynamic EQ will have more functions per band compared to a standard multiband compressor. Another difference is the scenarios where you should use a dynamic EQ over a multiband compressor and vice versa, so we wrote this article to help you judge when to use one: *How and When to Use Dynamic EQ* www.waves.com/how-and-when-to-use-dynamic-eq

Greetings, Thank you graciously for the tips. I'm a 70's guy and about a year and a half ago, I entered into computer based recording. Far from the two reel to reel decks we used when I was in my teens, even different than the porta studios. I liked your video. I have a lot of plug ins and vi's, and each one has a manual 30 pages long. Sometimes I get a little lost in all the information, so tutorials like yours are priceless to me. I already had the F6 but had no idea what it could do until I watched your tutorial. I tried and was successful at getting the F6 to dampen the instruments and make a little more room for the vocals, but I had to find a different way because I can't find the VOX trigger you used. I looked it up and know that it's a voice operated switch, but can't find one like the one you dropped into the F6 to cause the instrument(s) dampening to happen when the girl on the tracks sang. I thought for sure it was a plug in but I"m finding nothing. Where would I get a VOX trigger like the one you used on the F6? Thanks a bunch.

Normally you do this with sidechaining. Sending the vocal to a bus. 0db Pre Fader. Then in F6 selection the sidechain option to "External". In Pro Tools ypu also have to choose in the sidechain menu (top left of the plugin screen) to which bus it's sidechained to. I don't have F6 but that's how you can do it. Even with plugins like Fab Filter MB you can chose only 1 band to be external sidechained and all the other band not to be.

When Global Release is set to ARC, the ARC engine will calculate the shortest possible release time based on the signal’l envelope. Hello Dave. I just cannot speak more highly of your videos. Thank you so very much for the fine quality "how to's" you produce. From the instant they begin, you get right to business with no 20 second ear deafening graphic intro to prove to us how "cool you are". So many of us appreciate your no-nonsense professional approach. That said, let me get to my question. I have been experimenting with the "Waves f6 floating-band dynamic EQ" you are demonstrating in your video. Functionally, I have no problem with it. Visually, however, I have a big beef with it. I can't see the dammed (oops, I mean "darned") thing. To begin, Waves uses dark gray lettering against a black background, then they make the fonts so small, my (more than) 50 year old eyes cannot see them. Even when I use a large external monitor, I just can't see the text. Unfortunately (as far as I can see) there is no way to grab the edge of the EQ window and stretch it larger. There also (as far as I can tell) is no way to custom set the foreground and background colors for something more "visually friendly". Something as simple as changing the font color to white would be unbelievably helpful. The visibility of the plug-in really awful and more than just a little frustrating. It's so frustrating, in fact, that I'll most likely need to go to another EQ product simply because of the horrible "un-eye-friendly" size/color of the interface and its fonts. So my question to you is this? Am I missing something? Can a user increase the size of the window and/or fonts... and also set the color scheme? (I notice you too are "mature"... Do you have trouble seeing what's being displayed on the interface?) Keep up the great work, sir.

Hi again Dave. Since I made the original post (above) I did hear back from Waves support. They were quick to point out the F6 Dynamic EQ has not been approved for use with Studio One 5 ... The analyst's "solution" was for me to go back to Studio One 4 and test the F6 EQ there.... He added (and I quote) "I don't hold any ETA on a fix" (regarding compatibility with Studio One 5). That's simply not going to happen. I'm not going to roll back my DAW to a previous version (especially since Studio One 5 has so many great new features now that I would not want to live without.) So just a heads up to others out there... If you are having problems using Waves F6 EQ with Studio One 5, you will be told by waves that you are simply out of luck. It's time to shop around for another EQ plugin, I think. 😡

Important note: at 1:05 he says “the we’ll set the Threshold...” but notice that he also sets the Range (to -4.6). Range tells the F6 HOW MUCH you want it to attenuate the frequency. It also works to boost if needed. Talks a bit about it at 2:34, and again at 5:44 This drove me nuts until I figured out the Range setting, because otherwise it won’t do anything !! Tadaaaaaaaaa

And writing the question, another one just popped out: What about a lowering band that can make an upward compression? The white line remains flat. The only trick I've found is to actually use one of the presets, and customize it to taste. Surely there's something I'm not doing right.

Anyone know how the hell you set up the sidechaining on Ableton? I can't find any proper tutorials on how to route the incoming sidechain signal properly..

hey! in case you are still wondering. had the same problem and came up with a solution. lets say you want the f6 on your bassline and side chained by the kick: insert the f6 on the bassline track, dublicate the kick track and change the output from 'master' (or where ever you had it to) to the bassline. another little box underneath the output (still on the dublicated kick track) should appear with the option to send it to the f6 on the bassline. Also make sure that you your dublicated kick isnt sending to any send/returns... took me a day to realize the kick sound wasnt coming out of the bassline track...
