What is the difference between a dynamic eq and a multiband compressor ? Sorry if this is a stupid question

no vnm a dynamic eq is a mix between a eq and multiband compressor so you can eq something while compressing at the same time

Hi no vnm. Don't worry, we get asked this question a lot. The major differences are in the functionality. A dynamic EQ will have more functions per band compared to a standard multiband compressor. Another difference is the scenarios where you should use a dynamic EQ over a multiband compressor and vice versa, so we wrote this article to help you judge when to use one: *How and When to Use Dynamic EQ* www.waves.com/how-and-when-to-use-dynamic-eq

How could anyone dislike a video like this? The presentation, is clear, concise, and super informative, and the engineer is laid back. He's sharing some of his knowledge for free, what's not to like?!
Absolutely brilliant tutorial by genius Dave. The examples are perfect. F6 is an amazing plugin.
Best nine minutes of my life, and best 30 bucks I ever spent !!!!! Thank you so much for your tips and knowledge.
I had bought this plugin a month ago, it's a fantastic tool, the explanation is clear and will help many producers make the tracks sound better
I always love hear from the masters. Right on the point, clear and precise! Amazing plugin.
Dave is a natural-born engineer and brilliant teacher. A real treasure.
Great job of clearly explaining and showing examples of how the F6 plug in works. Thanks Dave!
thanks waves...mind blowing as usual. the frequency sidechaining of the voice to the beat is a new approach to me, wow.
This was pure genius. I been waiting on something like this. You are life savers .
Dave! Awesome! This is exactly how I was hoping to use it, and you explained it perfectly! You rock and thank you!
I love this tutorial...I tried learning multiband EQ and compression 2 years ago and mentally just wasn’t ready yet but now I totally understand the importance of it
this is actually a great example of how to use dynamic eq in a subtle but very helpful way
Thanks Dave! Such a great plug-in, Waves. One of my favorites. :)

Awesome. I was wondering how this plugin worked and this video immediately gives a great explaination.
Loved this tutorial, thanks so much. I'd been using F6 as a standard EQ for years, but this tutorial cleared up a lot about the dynamic options :)
3:10 first time in my life I have seen a dynamic shelf. great idea!
Excellent, this video is very helpful, I really needed to know this. Thank you 👍🏽
Great video I could learn from this guy for hours & hours
Greetings, Thank you graciously for the tips. I'm a 70's guy and about a year and a half ago, I entered into computer based recording. Far from the two reel to reel decks we used when I was in my teens, even different than the porta studios. I liked your video. I have a lot of plug ins and vi's, and each one has a manual 30 pages long. Sometimes I get a little lost in all the information, so tutorials like yours are priceless to me. I already had the F6 but had no idea what it could do until I watched your tutorial. I tried and was successful at getting the F6 to dampen the instruments and make a little more room for the vocals, but I had to find a different way because I can't find the VOX trigger you used. I looked it up and know that it's a voice operated switch, but can't find one like the one you dropped into the F6 to cause the instrument(s) dampening to happen when the girl on the tracks sang. I thought for sure it was a plug in but I"m finding nothing. Where would I get a VOX trigger like the one you used on the F6? Thanks a bunch.

Normally you do this with sidechaining. Sending the vocal to a bus. 0db Pre Fader. Then in F6 selection the sidechain option to "External". In Pro Tools ypu also have to choose in the sidechain menu (top left of the plugin screen) to which bus it's sidechained to. I don't have F6 but that's how you can do it. Even with plugins like Fab Filter MB you can chose only 1 band to be external sidechained and all the other band not to be.
Started using this vst today, i can tell it’s going to be used all the time now. So amazing 👍🏻
Dave, you are awesome. Thanks so much for the cogent tutorial!
Brilliant! Thank you so much, Dave!
That's a great demonstration. Right on spot! Big thank you!!!! :-D
Really awesome!! Gave me a bunch of ideas, thanks allot :)
This guy is my mixing hero... loved all the stuff he did with Louie Vega and Kenny Dope on the nuyorican soul album and their individual projects
What a master! Thank you for sharing your knowledge
Really useful, I didn't know about taming a frequency range to make space for the lead vocal, I'm used to turn down other stuff.
Clear and nice video! Thank You!!
F6 should have came out years ago.. It's an amazing plugin.
This EQ is part of my template on Reason. Awsome EQ
Great tip for using the dynamic shelf in band 6.
I have many Waves plugins but just bought this one. The most useful plugin I've ever bought. Did wonders to the mixes I'm working on. Its the poor mans Q Fabfilter and does the same stuff for $29. Essential.
3:22 ARC is Automatic Release Control, MNL is Manual. A quote from the Waves guide: “ Sets the type of release for dynamics processing. When Global Release is set to ARC, the ARC engine will calculate the shortest possible release time based on the signal’l envelope. This value will always be shorter than the Release setting for the band.
Nice presentation. Thanks!
fantastic man!
waves plugins are superb !
Neat. Thank you Dave. I'm looking to give this a try on problematic dialogue. Most of it is studio ADR and this might be a little more economical than the great TDR Nova which is a parallel architecture. Plus I really like the range parameter to keep the action in check.
Very helpful thanks!
Very great F6 plug ins . Is a great dinamic eq in style EQ3 ma fantastico
i love this dude's vernacular.
This is a future plug in, it’s great.
Just thanking Dave for his go, go instructional explanations...

Good demo, incredible enjoying song. I was hoping they stoped doing this kind of songs and sounds in the other side of the century but surely the didn't.
Hello Dave. I just cannot speak more highly of your videos. Thank you so very much for the fine quality "how to's" you produce. From the instant they begin, you get right to business with no 20 second ear deafening graphic intro to prove to us how "cool you are". So many of us appreciate your no-nonsense professional approach. That said, let me get to my question. I have been experimenting with the "Waves f6 floating-band dynamic EQ" you are demonstrating in your video. Functionally, I have no problem with it. Visually, however, I have a big beef with it. I can't see the dammed (oops, I mean "darned") thing. To begin, Waves uses dark gray lettering against a black background, then they make the fonts so small, my (more than) 50 year old eyes cannot see them. Even when I use a large external monitor, I just can't see the text. Unfortunately (as far as I can see) there is no way to grab the edge of the EQ window and stretch it larger. There also (as far as I can tell) is no way to custom set the foreground and background colors for something more "visually friendly". Something as simple as changing the font color to white would be unbelievably helpful. The visibility of the plug-in really awful and more than just a little frustrating. It's so frustrating, in fact, that I'll most likely need to go to another EQ product simply because of the horrible "un-eye-friendly" size/color of the interface and its fonts. So my question to you is this? Am I missing something? Can a user increase the size of the window and/or fonts... and also set the color scheme? (I notice you too are "mature"... Do you have trouble seeing what's being displayed on the interface?) Keep up the great work, sir.

Hi again Dave. Since I made the original post (above) I did hear back from Waves support. They were quick to point out the F6 Dynamic EQ has not been approved for use with Studio One 5 ... The analyst's "solution" was for me to go back to Studio One 4 and test the F6 EQ there.... He added (and I quote) "I don't hold any ETA on a fix" (regarding compatibility with Studio One 5). That's simply not going to happen. I'm not going to roll back my DAW to a previous version (especially since Studio One 5 has so many great new features now that I would not want to live without.) So just a heads up to others out there... If you are having problems using Waves F6 EQ with Studio One 5, you will be told by waves that you are simply out of luck. It's time to shop around for another EQ plugin, I think. 😡
Thank you
very2 useful thank u sir
This plugin sounds great and I use it all the time. Any reason for not including a spectrum analyser?
I almost always set my vocal sidechain to 1.6khz as well haha. Made me giggle.
Amazing I love waves please do one on Abbey Road plates and Abbey road vinyl
Thank you VERY MUCH! Is it possible to use a band compressing at, let's say, 115Hz as a trigger of a different band frequency to upward compression?
THANK YOU SIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
nice what kind of microphone and preamp have you used on this vocal
I think I've never been this excited to spend 30 bucks on anything before

I just bought and downloaded this. What is the difference between the mono, mono RTA and stereo, stereo RTA?
Love this plugin I just wish it could add colour EQ just
finally an actual mixer giving tips - not some nerd face instagram - you tubers with weird haircuts and assertive voices blabbering.....

Important note: at 1:05 he says “the we’ll set the Threshold...” but notice that he also sets the Range (to -4.6). Range tells the F6 HOW MUCH you want it to attenuate the frequency. It also works to boost if needed. Talks a bit about it at 2:34, and again at 5:44 This drove me nuts until I figured out the Range setting, because otherwise it won’t do anything !! Tadaaaaaaaaa

What's the brand of the big speaker behind screen ?
Does the sidechain feature work in Reason 10?
how it works from laptop to your vocal waves f6 dynamics eq n thanks you so much
So whats the difference between this and the C6? distortion on the crossovers has been fixed?
Does anyone know if the F6 can view multiple tracks at the same time? The Pro Q3 does this and it seems like that would be an awesome way to compare kick and bass for example.
would this help with backing tracks in a live performance? I have some tracks with too much bass and some I would like to add punch
THANK YOU SIR . bLESS bLESS

Hi! Thank you very much for the video. I gotta question: How to set the ratio? We have threshold, attack, release, but I could not see the ratio. And writing the question, another one just popped out: What about a lowering band that can make an upward compression? I mean, I set 2K 2dB lower but at the time the program hit the threshold it do not attenuate this frequency, but boost it... Is that possible to do using F6 ?
@virgilhughes7837

Can anyone explain why for the pink high shelf curve the Q is all the way up to 2.2?
I never thought to use bus compression sidechained to the vocal like that. I'm just not sure if it makes sense that there is more gain reduction when she sings louder

Anybody else notice that the high pass seems difficult to get it to engage. Click, double click, click again, keep trying and finally it lights up. I’ve heard that from a few people. Anyone else?
I have this plugin but for some reason I've never found a way to make my eq bands dynamic. I turn the various knobs for the threshold, attack etc but it just doesn't react. The white line remains flat. The only trick I've found is to actually use one of the presets, and customize it to taste. Surely there's something I'm not doing right.

I think is the crossovers the difference. The C6 & C4 tends to distord in the crossovers points. Weird side effects almost not audible but a little problematic when dealing with bass frequencies. Waiting for Waves to answer my question above to make sure.

hey! in case you are still wondering. had the same problem and came up with a solution. lets say you want the f6 on your bassline and side chained by the kick: insert the f6 on the bassline track, dublicate the kick track and change the output from 'master' (or where ever you had it to) to the bassline. another little box underneath the output (still on the dublicated kick track) should appear with the option to send it to the f6 on the bassline. Also make sure that you your dublicated kick isnt sending to any send/returns... took me a day to realize the kick sound wasnt coming out of the bassline track...
