The following 5 plugins are ones that Ariel uses on almost every single mix, and that he has the most fun shaping sounds with.
1. Waves F6
This is a plugin that Ariel discovered recently, and has quickly become one of his favorite of all time. The reason for this is because of the versatility and how easy it is to choose the side chain source for individual bands.
2. Waves Vitamin Sonic Enhancer
The Waves Vitamin is a plugin that Ariel feels gets overlooked a lot, but that he has a lot of fun with. It is essentially adding harmonics to different frequency bands, so you can really shape the tone of an instrument. It adds harmonics that weren't there and helps you to beef up your sound without using EQ or compression.
3. Plugin Alliance Maag EQ4
This plugin is a secret weapon of many top mixers (although it may not be a secret anymore). The hardware version of this plugin had an Air Band, which is also available on the plugin version, which was used to bring a lot of clarity to individual tracks, as well as subgroups or entire mixes, and it colors the sound in a really unique way.
This is a plugin that you really have to put your ears on. You can't just "set it and forget it", you have to really listen to what it is doing, because it can easily become harsh. However, when it is done right, you can add a bit of edge or really just open up the sound.
4. Soundtoys Decapitator
This is basically a saturation tool that adds harmonics and distortion. It emulates a lot of outboard gear, their characteristics, and the tone and the way it shapes the sound. Ariel says this is a great shaping tool for when you beed a little more grit, distortion, or character.
This plugin contains five different saturation sounds, as well as a "Punish" knob, so there is a lot you can do to shape the sound. It is great for adding a professional feel to a lot of your productions and mixes, in a way that adds color and tone. A secret weapon of a lot of the top guys is how you color sounds to make them really jump out of the speakers, and this plugin helps you do that.
5. UAD Pultec EQP-1A
This plugin is featured in both of Ariel's courses with Pro Mix Academy, and he talks about it extensively. One of the great things about this plugin is its ability to tighten the low end, while also boosting the low end. This sounds like an oxymoron, but this plugin is amazing for helping you get fantastic top end and low end. Ariel says that if he had to pick an EQ to mix with for the rest of his life, this would be it!

Use that with bass drops or transitions sidechained to bass elements. So your transitions have impact without fighting for low end with the bass. Also useful to get the bass out of the way of the kick very quickly. SUPER creative to use it on reverb though, putting that in my back pocket. Fabfilter Pro-Q 3 has the same feature, to use the sidechain only on specific bands.

Ef Nerva I haven’t used it in a little while, does it force all the bands’ dynamics sections to follow the sidechain? That kind of sucks. Either way, Yeah, if that’s what you’re using the dynamics in the plugin for, it works great. I used to use it for that exact purpose.

Out of curiosity, what genres do you normally mix where all of these plugins come into play together? I love the PCM native reverb bundle(using it like a lexicon 224) but if I didnt swear by it, Id probably be using that Valhalla & another vintage verb). Your fav plugins list needs more saturation lol...those compressors are nice though & that Slate rack Im guessing is your "go to" saturation. I wish people could put me on to some great saturation plugins outside of the basic vintage compressor list.

I haven't compared it to the uad version, but I think it's pretty good, and it has a 4x oversampling option in the update. And it's free. Decapitator isn't a high-quality saturator. It has no oversampling and there are tons of aliasing artifacts. Take a high pitch sine wave and pitch bend it and watch the aliasing fold back below 20khz. Try the same with IK multimedia neve emulations, UAD channels strips/pres, Kazrog True Iron, Kush Audio transformer emulations, Black Rooster VPR-73, Fabfilter Saturn, etc. Much better, way less aliasing artifacts.

I use them all, except the Decapitator, but in place I use a Vertigo VSM-3, which was also analog hardware. The decapitator is on sale right now, maybe I buy that one as well.

My favorites are Waves (All of them). I also love SoundToys Echoboy and a really old plugin called Timeworks 4080L Reverb. BTW, I hate plugins and prefer to use outboard equipment when possible.

Spent years being frustrated with Waves... Glad the pricing is a little better, but haven't needed to pull the trigger. I got too much good stuff in my DAW! +10 points for maag EQ though

I have wanted that EQ4 for YEEEEARS, but I never seem to catch it on sale! 😖😫😩 I've yet to see anything else that gets up into that 40k psychoacoustic/perception frequency range, and it's... frustrating lol/smh On the bright side, I *LOVE* that the sample track for this video is this good! lol Always nice when the music itself makes you actually want to listen to music, analytically and otherwise 😉😄
