Episode 78. The MIG-31. A flight to the near space

Ғылым және технология

In this episode of Combat Approved, the viewers of Zvezda TV will learn more about the capabilities of the MiG-31. And they are impressive. After all, it holds several world records, which no other fighter in the world has been able to break yet. MiG-31 can climb to a height of 12-15 miles. This is near space, where tears do not even freeze - they boil. There is almost no air, the temperature and pressure are unsuitable for humans. But this is insignificant for the Russian fighter jet. Moreover, it can accelerate up to 1860 miles per hour up there. That's three times faster than sound. But after all, the MiG-31 is a military vehicle. This means the fighter is able to do all these things with full ammunition allowance on board. In this episode of Combat Approved, we'll send the Russian fighter jet to the borders of near space, where our Earth takes the form of a sphere. And we will show what the pilots feel in these moments.

You clearly have no idea about fighter design, the mig 31 is made from steel while all other modern fighters are made from aluminium, steel is 3 times as heavy as aluminium which means the mig 31 takes a massive hit to performance, it can only carry 4 R33 and 4 R60 short range missiles which gives it a payload if just over 2000kg, its combat radius is only 750km which is almost the same as the scud D missile and its agility is twice as worst as an F15 due to it being under powered, however if it was built from aluminium it would melt so it has to be built from steel because steel can withstand the high temperatures which aluminium would melt at, the us has built an interceptor version of the SR71 with internally carried missiles called the YF12 but it didn’t go into production because it was made from titanium which though was lighter was much more expensive, all the jobs the mig 31 dose, the west uses long range and short range missiles for, like avenger and SM-3

Russian weapon especially rockets are high precision and they don't aim at non military objects and civilians, that is also why it takes so long to complete objectives of special military operation in ukraine, Russians are avoiding civilian casualties as much as possible Ukrainians don't and never did ,they even use people as a shield , they also murderer families trying to escape ukraine .

Best comment, for me. As you will know, the 31 was a Mach 3+ platform, but it could not cruise at M3+ like the SR71's. Any longer than a few minutes at high Mach and the pilot had to back-off the thhrottles or destroy the powerplants. The 31 is still a very capable fast interceptor, and a legend within it's own sphere. Iadmire them for the beasts they undoubtably are. Stay safe, and God bless Russia and her peoples.

In 1985, a “stock” F-15 Eagle tested a new 2700 lb. Anti-satellite missile by firing it at an obsolete research satellite and literally “blowing it out of the sky …” .. we were all already so proud of the F-15, but when this hit the news, I remember thinking “If our Air Force has a fighter that can take out a target in SPACE, then any outstanding questions remaining about just how bad our asses are have now been answered, and maybe now the Soviet Union can wake up and smell the coffee, and stop causing problems. I was 26 in 1985, and never knew of any reality other than one overshadowed by the 24/7/365 threat of “the ‘Russians dropping the big one”. Remember, in 1985, the USSR was a sinking ship, but the Berlin Wall was still very much intact. News about us developing a weapon like this was music to our ears.

They did. It was the SR-71 Blackbird, and although it flew faster and higher, it was not armed with missiles and instead carried electronic surveillance and camera equipment. But this is the old Lockheed, and it was a different time. You are right in that as of today, no-one in the West could do something like this again. At the same time, the MiG-31 comes from the Soviet era and there is nothing in the near future that will replace it. At least not until the 2030s. And there are questions as to whether the merger of Mikoyan and Sukhoi could even produce a MiG-31 successor. The United Aircraft Corporation has so much of a backlog that it can only make 1 Su-57 per year because most of its resources are tied up in modernising Su-3x aircraft. Meanwhile the MiG-35 has yet to see high rate production and it was supposed to enter service 3 years ago. There are way too many competing projects with too few people and not enough labour and money to do them all.

This was the jet designed to intercept the sr71 it's not a dog fighter its a high altitude intercepter. Even tho there's war going on between nations I still love aviation and the migs. The fact they don't need a crew to seat you in and the pilot can do it himself is a great thing. By the time your strapped in their already in the air and coming for ya.

the difference is that the mig 31 can outmaneuver the straight flying sr71 which also cannot carry anything other than pilots.

You would find out that Russian planes are merely fluff and US technology is far more advanced and reliable..... Just look at what's happening to Russia's so called advanced fighter in Ukraine. Just like when the MIG-25 landed in Japan, they are finding out that Russian planes are not to be feared.
