Selma, your vest is gorgeous! I am a Louise Penny fan, have read all her books and didn't think I would enjoy the Three Pines series but, I did. The casting is much improved from the CBC version from several years ago. One of the books does address the topic of missing and murdered indigenous women but I like how it is a consistent storyline in this series. I have just today ordered some suri alpaca to hold together with fingering yarn to attempt my first Ranunculus - probably sometime in March. I don't set a word of the year but for the last couple of years I have been working hard on developing my resilience - both physical and mental . As I am in my 60s, this means recognizing the limits of my energy, both physical and mental, and respecting them. I am also working on recognizing what fuels my energy tank, such as knitting, and ensuring I make time for those things. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful projects and nature walks. Stay well!

Thank you, Selma, for your insightful look at the word of the year. Yes, I try to choose a word for personal growth. This year I have chosen "completion". I will be completing a 32 year teaching career and need to focus on finishing the myriad of projects that I have started. I think this will help me transition from the world of work to creating a balanced life of craft, exercise and strengthening relationships with friends and family. You look gorgeous in your pink vest.

The hot pink slip over is fabulous, as is the white one, but oh that bright pink, just makes a person smile. Lovely knits and lovely gifts and acquisitions. How wonderful to have people know enough about knitting to gift you such lovely yarn and books and such (the tatting is lovely). I don’t make resolutions, as I am too rebellious and then end up not following through, but themes I do gravitate towards. Gratitude is an ongoing theme- as a clinical Counsellor I explored the research and just thinking of things you might be grateful for increases serotonin and dopamine- how about that- generate your own “medication”! 🤗 I am now in my seventies and when I think back there were so many years when strength and perseverance and stamina were the mainstay of my days, that I just want to spend my time in gentle ways and enjoy the beauty of each day now and knitting is still part of what saves me and sustains me- thankfully- may my hands and eyes never give way. I am just binge watching Three Pines and so enjoying it. I will listen to some of Louise Penny’s books, as I like her way of writing. Thanks for the recommendations. May 2023 be an easier one for you, Selma. I would not have described myself as a strong person, but must say I have surprised myself along the way, and I am sure you will surprise yourself too. I certainly see a strong person shining through.

A bit late with this, I’m catching up with knitting podcasts. I have to tell you, my husband bought me the first 5 Gamache books for Christmas . Now I’ve been an avid reader all my life but 2020 pandemic - I stopped reading! Totally! Me that could crack r novels on a week! Anyway, we steamed through the 5, bought the next 5 and have just bought numbers 10-15. We love them! As well as being cracking books we’ve learned lots about Quebec too. And I have to say, Selma, that while reading, I have YOU in mind when I m reading about Reine-Marie! I know she is older than you but her calmness and kindness seem to be epitomised on the you I’ve come to know through the podcast. I think we have 2 more books to go…but hey, I’m back reading again! Thank you `Louise Penny! As for the Three Pines series, well, , I thought the casting was quite good and I understand the purist standpoint but hey it was a bit of fun. In other news - love that vest! I think there may be one in my future! Thanks for a lovely podcast!

Selma, I agree with you that the Shibui mohair is probably the softest and most "flooffy" I have ever used but I have recently knit a swatch with Rowan Kid Silk Haze and that is fabulous and their colours too. My word for the year is simplicity. I'm looking to simplify my sewing and knitting as well as other routines in my life. Also simplifying steps (eliminating some) from other things I do whether they be in camping or in the gym. I have listened to all Inspector Gamache stories and love them. Sometime this winter I'll watch the season as many others have recommended it too.

In fact, I felt weak! That's why the words I'm clinging to this year are BRAVERY and STRENGTH, as I face some medical challenges. Hey Selma! Vest is fabulous. I love your word of the year! I to hear ya on weird and trying year. I had so many bizarre ailments including teeth and a bubble in my eye- I’ve lost count…. I just try to be happy day by day and take one day at a time. But some focus on strength would be good. Speaking of strength get the book Endurance out of the library by Ernest Shackleton. It’s his first hand account of his team’s to make it to the South Pole. It becomes an epic survival story. To his credit he didn’t lose a single man and the final navigation leg is the finest example of navigation ever undertaken that we know about!

I do understand your need of knitting. I am in the same way, even if I don’t generate so many FO, I do knit every day. During my lunch break, after dinner, but my favorite time is in the morning. I wake up every day at 4:45, I get ready, I make my coffee cup and I knit in the silence of the house with myself! I also prioritize things in my life. And knitting clears my mind and helps me cope with all we have to handle. Do I have dust on the shelves? Probably yes, but does it bother me? Not too much! Once every 2-3 weeks I invite people over “on purpose” so I am force to clean…. And then back to my needles! I hope I will be able soon to make more sweater I love ….

Hi Selma, regarding mohair yarns, the two luxury ones I would recommend are Miss Click Clack Casterton Kid Silk (50 gm skeins) from Australia and Nurturing Fibres KidSilk (50gm balls) from South Africa. The most economical all rounder for me is Drops Kid Silk.

I believe that a lot of my physical and mental health is directly related to how much I move my body. I invested recently in an at- home gym. I wish that I had done so long ago! It’s so wonderful! I put a TV on a mount on the wall directly in front of my elliptical and I watch knitting podcasts (including yours!) while I work out. I can swing the tv around so that I can still watch while on the fitness trainer (universal). This has made a huge difference in my life. A good workout makes me feel like a different person. - Thought that I would share. ~

I think we had similar 2022s. I also felt like it was too much to handle, just so so hard. But we made it through! May 2023 be a smoother ride 🙏🏿 My word for 2023, which I hadn't chosen yet, will be ease. I'd like life to be much easier this year and however I can accomplish that will take priority 🙏🏿 So lots of nature and knitting! On a lighter note, I adore that bright pink combo! Such an unexpected and beautiful color for a vest! I'm planning a black Cargill with brushed suri alpaca but the swatch seemed to show the stitch well enough. We'll see if I regret it 🤣 I also really want to make that blanket you showed, and the Sark(sp?) book looks like something I must pick up! So many things to add to my queue!! And Eddie Vedder was my high school crush. He just didn't know it 🙃 Finally, thank you so much for shouting me out! I appreciate the warm welcome ☺️

I also learned you can do much more than you think you can do…anyway love the pink vest..I am thinking of the same color but it does make you look great! Your knits are always beautiful. I always look forward to see what you are knitting and what new beautiful yarns you have found. You inspire me. I love the patterns you choose because they are mostly very elegant and you let the yarn shine instead of the pattern. You talked about being overwhelmed last year. I have been on that road. Sometimes you need to let go. By that I mean, turn off the tv and radio. Turn off the media and do something that lets your body relax and heal. Knitting is one, but reading is another that has helped me. Nothing that makes me have to think, but books that bring me joy. I love mysteries. I can remember, as a child, (I'm 70 now), how even when my parents were worried about what ever, I was busy in my little world creating something by coloring, or writing, or just going outside and doing flips in the yard. That is where us as adults have lost that ability to just be. As adults we can't walk away from life and what it throws at us. But we can throw back, and we can still be kids. I still color. I have color crayons, and colored pencils and markers and color books and sometimes I spend the whole day coloring. When I do that, my mind just blanks out and mind is busy thinking of what color will go well with the other. It really is meditative. I hope 2023 is a joyous one for you and I look forward to seeing all your podcasts.

Beautiful vest. Appreciated your opening up about yourself and your challenges near the end, can relate, especially as we get a bit older (health, energy). When you said what words pop into your head for a word-of-the-year, the one that immediately came up was "gentle", which at first surprised me, but it makes so much sense, as I often have too high expectations and am too hard on myself. Wishing you health and joy in abundance this year, thanks for taking the time to share with us. Loved the song at the end and share your joy of appreciating Canadian winters. (Calgary).

Holstgarn supersoft is my favorite wool for knitting. I especially like it paired with Titicaca, although I've made several sweaters with it single (which are really comfy, warm and light wieght) and am in the process of knitting my huisband a traditiponal norwegian lice sweater out of it held double. Can't wait to finish and full that one!. While it is superr rustic feeling while knitting, it fulls beautifully!

But your vest has def inspired me to get out of my comfort zone of moody purples and grays and go for that bright pop of color! Beautiful pattern picks as always!!! In order to clear my plate for projects, currently I am working on turning WIPs into FOs and spending some time mending and darning those items which need repair.
