Episode 69. Safety at Sea for Lennie and Me (US Sailing)

Фильм және анимация

Hi Everyone, Lennie and I decided to take some formal safety training and we learned a lot while having a great time at SUNY maritime college in New York City. This US Sailing class includes a hands on field day along with an online course that was really fascinating. Seems amazing we cruised 12000 miles without taking this course and believe me we were probably not as well prepared as we thought for safety. I think the biggest takeaway was all the radio comm info along with life jacket training. It's hard to explain just how much info is packed into this course and I encourage anyone who boats to take it. Oh yeah....we also had some of the usual Randy and Lennie fun in New York 😁

Everything you do - is a notch or two - above all the other sailing vlogs. You're properly laying the bricks - and you two are going to take thousands of people on a wonderful trip that we can't go on ourselves. I can't wait to see your special perspective on the world.

Great for you to give exposure to this program. Many think it’s just for racers, but all boatowners and anyone spending a lot of time on the water will benefit from it. Cruisers are people too!

My sailing classes and safety classes were in 1959. I was 12 i sailed till I was 45, and sold my Morgan, I am living vicariously no joke, in my 70's. First big race was crew on a Newport to Bermuda. I miss the water. You both were stellar in your classes.

I did my sea safety course in the UK. There was a wave machine in the pool and the instructors enjoyed hosing our faces with water. Some sea cadets where also supplied to act as scared and disobedient crew. It was no fun being in a full six man life raft in even 3 foot seas. Thank goodness I had taken some anti-sea sickness pills beforehand. the experience reinforced the saying "only ever step up into a life raft" :-)

Hi Lotophagi, Wow that sounds like it was a serious course. All our training was in benign conditions and I can only imagine what it would be like in a gale. It reinforced for me that we need to keep the boat safe and not fall off to avoid having to use these skills. We will continue to train on our gear on our own boat. Thanks Randy

Great vid again guys. Good to see that you’re doing the survival safety training. If they had done the mob drills with an 80kg dummy it would have given everyone a better idea of how difficult it can be to recover a mob that is injured or unconscious, it’s not easy. Positioning the boat is the easy part 😊. Looking forward to seeing the boat outfitting completed and you guys out on the water 👍🍻

Hi doomoncharlie, The hood is proven to prevent drowning from waves breaking over a persons head while in the water in rough conditions. It has saved lives. Great question! Randy

The Classes, the Drills, the Training is GREAT. Where it falls OFF, is WHEN Peps GET back oN they're SHip, and STOP Practiceing and Training and allow complacency to set in; Untill an emergency may happen theb........ Oh, I've seen some things about the emergency hatches sometimes having seal problems, or in some cases giving way. Have you investigated having a blank off plate made to place OVER those hatches in a case where they give way? not a frequent occurance, buuuuut....... F.W.F.S.

As a fellow South Floridian, I agree that this class as well as the Coast Guard Marine Rules should be required to operate a water craft...my dad and I love watching those who have the money but no skills operate, launch and recover all manner of pleasure craft... sometimes it’s hilarious...other times we just make bets for how long they have before a disaster... Can’t wait for your ARC videos and the break in of the new Leopard...it’s quite a dream..safe travels...
