@@esperborzoi LOL! I remember sitting in class years ago, when one of my classmates noticed that there was no separation between the hair on my chest and my beard. Sadly true! Some of us are just covered in hair, and there's not much we can do about it, except to shave in order to look normal(ish). The interesting thing to know is this: what does that Teddy Bear on your chest transform into when you stop shaving? Does it become an Afghan Hound, bounding out of your shirt and across your face?

Ours were very much hyper and bouncing off the walls untill about age 3, then nap time was 23 hours of the day. They don't want to be up before 7am. You sit down on the sofa and you will have a dog next to you inside 3 minutes despite them being asleep in the other room. Terrible separation anxiety. Of our three whippets, two are less brave than chickens, the third is an outlier and actually has a protective streak and will also guard.

I have owned 14 Deerhounds to date . The boys are more loyal . The girls tend to be more aloof although there are always exceptions. They have no nastiness in them and welcome everyone. Even a burglar I suspect. Love running and walking for miles but equally happy in front of the fire. I find them to have a humour that other dogs don't seem to have. And that far away gaze they have in their eyes reaches your soul. Magical and mystical. I adore them

Wow! Where did your greyhounds race? I’ve adopted retired racers direct from the racetrack here in Birmingham, Alabama for the last 20 years and all came to us incredibly healthy and well cared for. We volunteered with the adoption center and got to know several of the kennel staff. We actually board our hounds at the track adoption center when we can’t travel with them. Due to the racing closures in Florida and COVID, our track has closed live racing. Our local group went from placing over 900 hounds a year in homes as far as Canada (99.5% adoption rate) to having no hounds available to adopt. I found your video while looking into other sighthound breeds and do appreciate the breakdown on your experience with the sighthound breeds. You are right that the smaller they are equals more high energy. We have friends with IGs and whippets and our Greys find them to be way too high energy.

Wow, this really shows how different individuals there are! Though I live in Scandinavia, maybe there's differences in the breeds just between the dogs here and there... But anyway, my whippets were really really cuddly, and they're a lot less aloof than my other sight hounds have been. Many people here say that whippets are more ''dog-like'' than sighthounds in general, more excited to meet people and other dogs, more eager to train. I've had only one greyhound so it's more about an individual with her... But she wasn't a rescue, racing in Scandinavia is just a fun hobby here, the dogs that aren't fast or run well and the dogs that win all their races live average companion dog lives when they're not racing. They will run in races during summer until they're about five, rest of their lives and inbetween races they sleep on the couch and go for walks just like any other dog. It always shocks me how racing dogs are treated around the world, here it's just a hobby for a dog and their owner to enjoy, just like agility etc. But anyway, mine isn't a rescue, I got her from a breeder as a puppy and she's been a companion dog her whole life. She's very energetic for a greyhound, even if she's getting old she will easily walk for 10km and ask for more. When she was younger she'd easily run for two hours when off leash in the countryside, these days she will run a few spurts and that's it. My friends greyhounds that attend a couple races per year are lot lazier. They love racing and get very excited about a lure, but in everyday life they don't need long walks and will only run a few spurts and then they're done. Here greyhounds are considered to be one of the sighthounds easiest to let off leash. Maybe for ex-racing rescues it's different. As for deerhounds, my two friends have a couple each and they'd let a robber walk right in and wouldn't move a muscle. On the other hand my borzoi male guards his territory fiercely and would absolutely murder a robber. I've heard of other borzois with a guarding instinct but not as strong as his, on the other hand I've also heard of guarding deerhounds. Once again individual differences step forward. Commonly though, most borzois make poor guard dogs and based on what my friends say, so do most scotties.

Really fun walk through the breeds and your dogs look so cool! Fell in love with sighthounds as a kid when my aunt adopted a Borzoi with a Russian tattoo she found running on the beach in Trinidad, CA and was believed to have bolted from a Russian trawler. Great dog who loved her and all her other dogs and cats. I had a wonderful and loyal whippet as my first and only sighthound so far- sweet, sensitive, and snuggly, such a different personality than my big, herding Aussie that I have now. I've wanted a Borzoi and a deerhound for forever now, and they may have be might next dogs. My wife and our cats will adjust eventually...

My whippet did not need the leash. And, he was the absolutely most friendly dog. We would walk down the street, and if I saw some people approaching us who seemed interested (which was almost always because he was so gorgeous), I would lean over and whisper, "Go say hello!" He would bound over to them, and it was always a delight.

I've had a borzoi and an Afghan Hound. For the moment I've a tiny Italian Greyhound and an adopted race-grey. In the making is a Deerhound. My Grey is a do-not-challenge-me-on-speed guy. But once point proven, he doesn't want to move again for the rest of the day. Interesting as you describe at least 2 of your deers as guarddogs. Will see what happens. And yes: we have the ultimate master of guard dogs in the hous too : A Schnauzer. She trains our Grey now. Or at least she puts a lot of effort in it. Hope she will train our deer too. He should be the gentle giant, but at least warn if something strange happens in the house. You should try once an Afghan hound. They really have a special character. Was also an excellent guard dog.

I also wanted to add that when I add yogurt to his 'rancho'/Dry food, (once or twice a week), I ask if he want's the Borzoi food. His skin is so dry that we need a flea-collar rather than the usual topical treatment. Sheds alot plus yogurt once or twice a week= healthy coat. Not our first rescue but getting the neglected/lost/abandoned Hunting Dog to stop chewing rock's,was one of the heart-breaking moments, grew up with no direction in a cage.... No chip, only let out to hunt.

My Whippet is pretty much as described. She is 1 y.o. as of now, if we go running on out morning walk for like 45-60mins she most likely will sleep untill noon, if morning walk was like 30mins, she'll sleep quite a bit, but not untill noon (if it's less than 30min, she'll just try to play with us, destory the house or bark randomly). Lots of energy, not sure if it is because she's still only 1 y.o. (probably will have less energy after she's like 1.5-2 y.o.).

I have experience of being owned by longhaired Dachshunds (I feel the more feline of the Daxies, cats with velvet beaks :) ). I have been caught up in looking at Salukis, Borzoi and Deerhounds for a few years. I like non yappy, when adult : calm Indoors, fairly self contained but good with being gently cuddled or touched without me being bitten. As a teenager my family had a tibetan spaniel that loved us while awake! But She would snap at us if we placed a hand on her while she was resting on the sofa. She was definitely uber Oriental in temperament. It has made me cautious of Salukis, breeders have told me Saluki value personal space greatly, including the sofa. So perhaps Borzoi.......thank you for being the only YY video discussing experience of several sighthounds in the home.

It's a shame I can't run him,but there are just too many bad scenarios. What will he bring back if the hunt kicks in,What state will he be in? I'm curious: at 4:30 you mention sighthounds being so independent that they can't be off leash. I don't have the long history with sighthounds that you do, and I wonder if mine are mutants? I have a Staghound and a Scottish Deerhound. Neither of them ever sees a leash, partly, at least, because we live way out in the boondocks. Despite being bred to hunt deer, both of them obeyed me and stopped chasing deer the first time I called them back. Now they live happily with the deer that occupy our property. Neither dog has made any effort to chase a deer since the first time each one got called back. Oddly, the deer seem to sense that the dogs are not a threat, and they just graze contentedly while we are out in the barnyard with the dogs. I'm guessing that's not normal behavior for sighthounds?

I own a Scottish Deerhound and they are cold weather dogs. I live in Minnesota and during the winter my dog will run all day if it is below 45 degrees and cloudy. She loves running in 20 degree weather single digit temps do not bother her. During the warmer months, she will run for 5 minutes at a time and rest in the shade. Their coats are grey to grey-black and they heat up quickly in the sun. They are not hot weather dogs. I owned 2 black Giant Schnauzers and they would run all day in cold weather. During the spring and summer, 5 minutes of running and they were done. Same for my Italian Greyhound. She loved the heat but prefered to run on early spring or early fall weather. I am surprised that 2 of your Deerhounds were protective because they are not supposed to be. They are supposed to be one of the more friendly sighthounds. Mine loves everyone she meets.

In a city setting, I would never ever ever - cars take too many sighthounds lives. Just as you described your own dog's growing up, same breeds but night and day behaviors and personalities. Take them with a grain of salt. I love you pup on the couch, she seems so sweet. Love when she walks under the tree-- my current male mutt loves to go put off his way to brush along our big indoor tree as well 😁

Would really depend on what you want to train them for, they are all a little different.

@@reptilesgamers00 I have trained both my borzois to do those things, and as long as I am in the wilderness (or a fairly wide territory) I allow them to walk off leash. It does take patience and extreme consistency, but it's doable- and you have to be ready to grab your pup if they decide to chase something and you have must have a consistent recall. Also, some individual dogs are better than others (Esper is glued to my hip when we walk Ora, still a puppy, is a little tougher but still doing great). Growing up we had scottish deerhounds, whippets, borzois and Greyhounds - we lived in a remote area and almost never had them on leash - we never had any run away (though they went to the neighbor to get food sometimes).

I've had an Afghan and a Silken windsprite. I can definitely say that the Silken is easier to train. I can even let it run off leash. This never ended well with the Afghan. 🤪

I love these vids but I gotta disagree on one point. when my sister was 19 she had a rescue greyhound, Cubby. one evening she was walking Cubby and she cut down the alley a few blocks from her house, and a guy started following her, acting like a jerk. well, he got closer and Cubs started growling, but he persisted. he tried to grab my sister's arm and Cubby nailed him. tackled him, knocked him down on his back and bit up his arms and face and throat. my sis bolted and called the cops and made a report, and the guy was a felon with former assault charges. he got picked up the next day. the cops said when they took him to the hospital he needed over 100 stitches to his arms and face. he'd tried supergluing the wounds shut 😐 sighthounds ADORE you. they're strong and fast and they WILL attack someone who's scaring or assaulting you. she probably saved my sister's life. I wouldn't get one specifically as a guard dog. but they will watch out for the people they love. dogs. truly the best friends we've ever had. ❤

the thing with a deerhound is the size. mine liked to sleep on the porch. he drove off the pesky jehovahs witnesses from the whole block, not just my stairs.they would start up, he would stand up, they would flee. he was just curious oh a visitor. the same was true of someone i knew in ny city. she walked them. robberies in the bldg stopped because they did not know in which apt the dog was and didn't want to find out. but doubt he would have attacked anyone.

I had a silken for 9 years - they originally come from Borzoi. From my experience they are a little more sporty (sighthound sprinters) in the size but have the elegance and nobility of borzoi in the look. I’ve been around a lot of them and even raised puppies with my breeder. Some breeders do not breed for temperament (only for look, or speed , for example). I have met more outgoing ones, but never as hyper as whippets. If you are a low energy person who just wants to take brisk walks with them, or let them run at a park, they are very low maintenance. They def will bond to you and want to be near you /cuddling, but mine would never chase balls or fetch, some do. I found in general that males are more outgoing and females more laid back. Hope this helps ! I absolutely love Borzoi- but because of size and lifespan they weren’t great for me. Silkens can live up to 15/ 16 yrs, mine passed at 13. Both breeds are incredible if you ask me.

i had 2 whippets as neighbors. they liked to jump into your arms and you'd go eee but they weighted nothing. ran down the block leaning into each other. would sometimes get out and be blocks away. disadvantage..people would stop and accuse the owners of starving their dogs. no even pregnant rose was skinny looking. with a deerhound. what kind of dog is that
