Love the Koufax. Absolutely love it. I was the only person who bid on that card. I was stunned when I won it. Sigh, Ken McMullen. I'm actually glad the Rose is on that card now. Back then when I bought it, I was pissed! LOL! Thanks for watching, Mark!

It's an elegant coincidence that the last card in the set, Johnny Temple, is also Johnny's last Topps card as an active major leaguer. I agree with you that often, a raw card of a superstar will sell for more than a mid-grade version, based on hope and speculation, on the part of both buyer and seller. Some Mets fans may also be buying 537 for Al Weis. Stargell played for so long that his nickname morphed from "Kid" to "Pops."

Yeah, there is always some strange card that no one can ever find. I remember 1973 was a Cardinals player was a guy named Bob Fenwick. He was a major issue to find. Damn, Mets fans are also buying the Rose? That for me was the one major issue of building team sets. The infamous RC of some other guy!

Hi Rick! Congratulations on completing the 1963 Topps set! It was great to share in part of your journey as you assembled such a beautiful set. It looks amazing in the binder with all those vibrant colors on display. I do wonder whether Topps should have used team logos instead of the second black-and-white image. While I think I prefer the logos, the dual photos are a nice touch and were a first since Topps adopted the standard card format. I hadn't seen the '63 Topps Dean Chance before. I really like the photo choice, and the rookie trophy makes it stand out. The '63 Koufax is my favorite card of his, and it might have been the first one I picked up when I got back into collecting as an adult. Do you find the set extra special since the Dodgers won the World Series that year? I tend to think about what was happening at the time when I look at my sets. You got a great deal on the Clemente to finish the set. I don't think that’s settling at all. By the way, you were close about the store near me-it's Dave and Adam's Card World.

Thanks Terry! 1963 is a great set. I like the logos on the card, but I also like the photos. I kinda wish the smaller images had been nicer so I know where you're coming from on using the logos instead. IMO 1963 set is the second nicest design of the 60s after 1965. Dean Chance was roomed on the road with Bo Belinksky as they were unseperable in the early days of the Angels. Angel management felt if they were roomed together, they'd one have one "problem room" as opposed to two. hahaha. The guy was a very good pitcher early in his career. Regarding the Dodgers being special, The Koufax is my favorite of his is my favorite for the reasons you mentioned. NL MVP, Cy Young Award, WS MVP, Set the strikeout record for one WS game. Love the Drysdale and Alston cards. Love the WS cards for the 1964 set. The Dodger cards were special back then for me. Dave and Adam's, I looked them up after we spoke and realized I had bookmarked them ages ago. I found the card but took too long thinking about it. At least I know now that I can look them up for other cards. They don't charge sales tax. So happy the 63 set is done. On to 1968! Have a good week, Terry!

HI Rick Awesome set! Congratulations on finishing this and you have inspired me to finish the one i am working on. I am 15 cards away, but these will probably cost me a lot more than the other 561 have yikes! Anyway, they are absolute beautiful!

Man those last 15 can be costly, but when you're done it'll look amazing. Do you have the Rose RC? I was lucky and bought that several years ago or else it would've taken a lot longer to complete. Thanks for watching!

63 is a great looking set indeed. The set took me 10 months to complete. I did have the Dodgers team set, Pete Rose RC and about 30 other cards for several years. Would have taken longer but I had the Rose and Koufax. Thanks for watching!

I appreciate you noting the series by the actual printing numbers rather than the phantom checklist groupings for which Topps was so notorious in those days. I have an idea why they did that, but that's a subject for a separate discussion. I always associate 1963 with that magnificent Dodgers blanking of the Yanks in the Series. I agree with you about the appeal of combo cards such as Series Foes, and I also feel Topps should have run more with that. Of course, the first one in that vein -- 1958 with Aaron and Mantle -- is a hobby avatar. That Big Three card brings to mind how many teams went with essentially three-man rotations back then. The conventional hobby wisdom used to be that the semi-highs were scarcer than the highs, but I believe that's evened out in later years, with each series being equally scarce.

I am still extremely confused by the entire series number situation. In 1961, the high numbers are 523-589, but series 7 is 507-589. Shouldn't that make 507-522 high numbers? It's never acknowledged in card land. Combo cards are so cool. Even if they're players I don't know, I still enjoy them. The one thing I failed to mention was that it wasn't really an issue buying the highs or semi high's. It not like 1961, 66 or 67 which are famous for being expensive. Thanks for watching!

From 1958-1966, Topps' checklist series rarely aligned with their printing series. (I'm not sure about the later 1960s.) I've only read one really incisive article about this. My own opinion is this: Except for the high series, each series was released with the checklist for the next series also included. But only a portion of the cards in that succeeding series were actually available the way Topps printed the sheets. This most likely whetted the kids' appetites for what was coming up and kept them buying.

Gosh, Rick, I read it way back, and I can't remember. I think it was Net 54 or Blowout. You might try to play around with a search for "checklists" on one of them.
