5 years ago you said in this comment section you only got 1 bloom on a 30 y/o epithelium. Did you find out why in the meantime as i suspect it needs re-potting to a larger pot with new soil. Re-potting is usually every two-three years. Only other option is trimming the roots & then placing new soil in. Blooms are effectively fruit. If you want more you need to feed the plant i.e fertilizer, without it you'll get few if any. Epiph's also like lots of water & plenty of sun

I've just found your channel and I am absolutely amazed, you are growing all of these desert plants so well, which is shocking here in ireland, I've been looking to grow some cacti and succulents and am having relative success so far, I have lost a couple of cacti, but I have also taken several cuttings from an echeveria and they have all rooted and begun growing baby little plants which is very exciting for me. Anyway great job on all of those beautiful plants and best of luck in the future, you're very talented.

I'm checking my epiphyllum as I listen to your You Tube. I saw a suspicious area and cut it off - and found a little green worm. I almost lost my epiphyllum after a few years to virus, insects & don't know what, so I cut off all the bad spots and left all the good bits in a pot with cactus soil and after about 6 months, have lots of healthy looking growth. Still some virused areas as I mentioned, but at least the little green worm was stopped before it did much damage. Thanks for a great video.

my Reed Stem Epidendrum also has a tendency to 'spot' about 3 spots per leaf - it's annoying but plant is growing and doing well

A little panicky...just received several cuttings..need your advice as to best way to root..do I use a grow light..dome over top..do u have a video on propagating these cactus...your awesome advice appreciated..

Thank you for your videos. I live on Vancouver island where the climate is somewhat similar to Ireland, with little sun and cold rainy winters. I grow mainly cacti and succulents on my balcony and move them indoors in winter where they survive in a cool, east facing window. I started an epiphyllum from a very small cutting and it started to put out a very healthy leaf. I noticed some withering on its tip and thought I would trim it off . Now there is another healthy shoot, but the same thing is happening again. The rest of the plant is very healthy and little shoots are sprouting from the cutting. What could possibly be wrong?

Thanks for this information Lyn, i do not have this on my Epiphyllums but i do have it on a Hylocereus undatus, but it doesn t seem to be bothered by it, it grows a LOT faster than this virus does.

Thanks for the information. I have a wheelbarrow full of epiphyllums they were damaged by hail and immediately started to die back. I cut them right back as far as possible and I think because it was drought here and we had water restrictions I was more aware and gave them heaps of water. They grew back like crazy and have flowered all through summer. I think apart from virus when the leaves get damaged some way they naturally do this dieback.

Thank you for another great video! My favorite orchid cactus has developed this. Was fine but started with small black spots and seems to have gotten worse. Not positive it isn’t scales but I am thinking it’s getting to much humidity (from the humidifier) at night when the lights are off so I might have to adjust my timer.

So happy you enjoyed the video, yes this can be common with Epiphyllums, and the higher humidity can definitely trigger these brown spots and markings, this happened a lot to mine when I had them in our high humid greenhouse, but now we have a dehumidifier in there over the Winter the spotting has stopped and the new growth has returned healthy, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and have a fantastic plant powered Monday XXXX

Yeah mine has that. I haven’t cut the parts out. I’m considering getting rid of it because of how it looks and it doesn’t bloom very often. But when it does bloom it makes me excited. But the blooms only last a day. The plant has yet to die though. But it just doesn’t bring me joy. It’s got white / yellow flowers.

So sorry to hear that your plant has this too, what you could do is to take a cutting of any of the growth that looks healthy. they propagate very well from cuttings, the flowers are very short lived on Epiphyllums which is a shame as they are incredible flowers, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, and wishing you a fantastic plant powered Tuesday XXXX

Interesting to know this is due to virus. One of my epiphyllum gets dried up areas that I just attributed to possibly underwatering. It doesn't seem to harm the plant though. None of mine flower though. Do you use the tomato feed on these plants also? Thank you!

Thanks for this information Lyn. My epi’s seem to have similar markings. I have pruned them and taken out some of those leaves. I have been told it was scale but I have tried to erase it with no success! I am just assuming it maybe a virus. Glad to hear they are common. Some of my leaves are thin and don’t seem to have that nice rubbery feel to them. Is it over watering or under. Help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi there

Hey, Lyn, have you ever considered trying to breed virus-resistant Epiphyllums? I don't know much about their growth cycle or how long it takes for their seeds to grow and mature, but if they're prone to viruses, it might just be a case of someone needing to take evolution into their hands for a bit. And if your plant is really really old, it might be a good place to start because it's had years to build up immunities and transfer those immunities to its seeds. A few generations of breeding might make you a super Epiphyllum.

Hi :-D the very skinny leaves may be 'support cane leaves that the plant puts out for supporting the plant, its common for Epiphyllums to do this and its nothing to worry about, if your plant is growing in plenty of light and otherwise looks healthy this is most likely what the leaves are :-D thanks so much for watching and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from the Emerald Isle for a wonderful week XXXXX

I have this on my second hand Selenicereus chrysocardium and variegated dischidia. I always understood at it being caused by over watering after dry months which has lead to EDEMA/OEDEMA. Cold and sun damage could also cause those dry patches. I haven't found any info about a potential virus though. :/

I’ve searched and searched for an answer on what’s happening with my epiphyllum and your helpful video is the closest I’ve come. However the symptom my plant presents is a bit different in that it has tiny raised hard black bumps that don’t come off. Is this also an indicative of a fungal issue?

Hi Colleen :-D so happy you fund the video helpful, yes hard raised black bumps can also be a fungal issue, I have encountered this with some of my Epiphyllums in the past, if the raised black bumps dont come off it does sound like it could be either fungal or bacterial or environmental, sometimes heat and cold stress can also cause these bumps, its best to treat the whole plant with a systemic fungicide spray to be on the safe side, but in my experience it nearly always doesn't seem to affect the others in the collection, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Tuesday XXXXX

Had a virus on my hookerie. Tried alcohol and it spread quickly down to the root and across the entire plant the following week and then went up another 2 segments in only 2 days so I cut it off to the clean area threw away the diseased part, threw away the soil too and am starting it over. It only had 3 segments of clean hookerie left. Hope it will grow.

I've never speculated that it was a virus, more the plant reacting as plants do and have never noticed worms or detrimental effects from the crispy effect, I just use my finger and thumbnail and break that crispy off and there's fresh flesh underneath, have never seen it bring a plant down, have been propagating these in water quite successfully lately. Do you see perfect ones that shows or nurseries that don't have the specs or crisping?

What happened with your new plant that you had in isolation? My 10 year old queen of the night which is quite large and has always done very well is looking a lot like that. I'm hoping I don't have to discard it!

I notice it on my toothpick cactus and it's getting worse, I'll try cinnamon is there anything else I can do?

Hi Nathalie, you can also use a systemic fungicide spray that is copper based, the systemic fungicide will work its way through the plant and should stop the virus from spreading, its not always a guarantee it will work but it can definitely help to stop it from spreading, you can also use Horticultural Neem oil as this is a natural based fungicide, but if the virus is spreading its best to use a Systemic fungicide ideally a copper based one, good luck with your Toothpick cactus and thanks so much for watching XXXX

Thank you for your video- My Christmas cactus is losing leaves, and has brown and yellow patches that look like yours, but there are also tiny black grains on it- like tiny caterpillar poop. Is it am the same fungus? I thought it might be thrip but grains don’t move

Hi Casey, yes the tiny black grains are due to Thrips poo, Thrips leave very tiny black and hard grains on the leaves, they look almost like ground pepper sprinkles, and this is often the only sign I see of these little 'Beasties' as the thrips themselves are hard to see if at all, these thrips cause the leaves to go brown and yellow and blotchy and the leaves drop off, I would recommend hosing down the leaves with water to clean the leaves and the best product I have found for Thrips that works is Provanto ultimate bug killer, it works very fast for killing Thrips, I also love to use Horticultural Neem oil mixed with horticultural soap but you have to re apply the Neem mixture every 3 days for about two weeks to completely get rid of all the Thrips, if you can't get the Provanto brand you may be able to get a similar insecticide especially for Thrips, thanks so much Casey for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Tuesday today XXXX

I have those exact markings on a large cactus plant. I treated it for armored scale because I thought that’s what it is. All I know is it’s spreading on my plants fast so I burned my cactus. I was able to cut part of it and hope it roots. The armored scale was on top of the light brown patches

hello dear, recently I got some epiphyllum from ebay one of them start some brown spot right on the middle of the leaf.and it looks like drying but also spreading.now if it was on top of the leaf I would cut the brown part off but it started from 2 or 3 inch from the vase of the leaf.do you think you can give me any advice on it..if you want to see the plant I can make a video.

Thats fantastic news that you have got some Epiphyllum from ebay :-D I think the brown spots are harmless and this sometimes happens when plants have been moved due to stress but they should recover once they settle into their new homes and the brown spots will fade to silver brown and will recover over time, and sometimes brown spots can occur if there was damage during mailing, but to be on the safe side it may be a good idea to spray your Epiphyllum with a fungicide such as Horticutural Neem oil or a Horticultural Fungicidal spray, although if it is caused from a virus this may not work, but fingers crossed it is harmless and your epiphyllum should make a good recovery

I have bought 2 Easter cactus this year, and they BOTH are infected with something. It's NOT bugs, I've tried several times to treat it, but to no avail!! It's been a few months, it's most definitely losing leaf's, and has also dropped full arms!! Idk what to do for it at this point!! Like yours it started ast the base and infected my plant all the way to the baby leaves!!

Thank you for putting out this info Lyn, I've got this problem on my fishbone epiphyllum but I didn't know what was causing it. I just thought my growing conditions were not quite to its liking. Now I can take some action, if I take some cuttings from the healthy leaves this year will they still get the problem?

Thanks for your reply Lyn, I did a bit of research today and unfortunately after what you have confirmed as well I think the best course of action would be to start with a new healthy plant. Aparently the virus is mostly spread by insect damage and unsterilised cutting tools when plants are propagated. Fortunately any seed the plants produce are free from the virus which is good to know. Have a great bank holiday weekend!

Hi Lyn, One of young epiphyllum plants has come down with some sort leaf virus. The centre of the leaf and the side of base has turned soft (like pulp). Those areas are also thinning and becoming transparent. Is it possible to send you a picture?

Hi there :-D it can depend on many things, most of the time the spots may be environmental and harmless and do not spread to the other plants, but sometimes it can be viral, you can prune off any of the leaves that have the dark spots on to be on the safe side and spray the whole plant with a fungicidal spay of horticultural Neem oil or a systemic fungicide spray

Hi Amber :-D the good news is this is normal as these Epiphytic plants produce aerial roots as they are epiphytic and like to have higher moisture in the air, they produce these roots to anchor themselves around trees and to take additional moisture from the air, some people cut them off but you can leave them on the plant too, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER and Happy Holidays to you XXXXX

@@desertplantsofavalon Seems like you have it under control.. its actually a little bit of a mystery to me too lol. Mine seems to be doing the same thing.. New growth is great but older leaves show signs of spots and blotches. Puzzles me a bit, but I don't think it's anything too serious. Glad we can try to fix it together lol.. let me know how it's going if you have time to give an update. I'd love to know your remedies. Your methods are always fantastic and work most importantly. I'm using cold pressed neem oil, do you think that's good enough, if it is a virus of some sort? Just curious as to what fungicide you use to combat mystery issues lol 😊

@@StaceyHerewegrowagain It really is a mystery with this virus, but the Neem oil seems to really help, I use the Neem about once a month on the leaves in Spring and Summer, but the fungicide I use is one by a brand called 'Rose Clear' called Rose Clear Ultra, its a systemic fungicide and insecticide but the systemic action works all through the plants leaves, its one that is designed for black spot on Roses but its safe to use on the Epiphyllums, I use it just the just the once when I see any signs of these blotchy spots and it seems to stop the virus in its tracks, and I will film an update video about the virus and what I have found has helped in the next couple of weeks, thanks so much Stacey for your wonderful support and comments and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Florida for a fantastic Thursday XXXX

I also get this on my Epiphythms , I changed my soil last year to A Hoya. orchid bark mix I make my own. But Since I Changed media to a more Chunky bark mix. I do not have these issues with spotting on my leaves

Hi. I have childhood memories of my mum growing epiphyllum and cacti and I have continued her passion for many years. I have grown an epiphyllum from a cutting and it's now a large, healthy plant except that recently it has developed what looks like a light brown mark on the lower stems, coming from the compost, running upwards. Could it be to do with hard water which we suffer from in the south east and if so is there an alternative?

Thanks for the video 🙂 my German Empress has something going on. I cannot find your "about section" that you mention that you can read about how to treat the virus? I am not sure my issue is same as your video. There's lots of bumps inside literally all of the leaves and some brown spots to a lesser degree. We just had a severe heatwave 4 days of 40 degrees plus c and I am sure I overwatered. But unsure if it is something else. So keen to read more if you can point me in right direction to find it please? Thanks 🙂👍

So sorry to hear about your German Empress, it sounds like the excess heat may have caused the bumps especially if they are inside the leaves instead of on the outside of the leaves, i sometimes have this happen to some of my Epiphyllums when have them outside for the Summer months and we get a lot of rain and sun, I notice little bumps inside the leaves, they seem to heal up themselves, but its best to treat the plant just in case, unfortunately the article I wrote about treating the virus was on my old website that no longer works, but I use Neem oil mixed with horticultural soap as a fungicide and to help treat any virus and spray it onto the leaves, you can also use a systemic fungicide spray too, but the horticultural neem oil mixed with horticultural soap seems to work best at stopping the virus, but I am pretty sure the bumps are harmless and caused from the heat and the cactus taking in water fast into the cells causing the tiny bumps inside the leaves, if the bumps are raised bumps and brown or clear brown there is a possibility it could be scale insect, and the best way to get rid of scale is by using rubbing alcohol/isopropyl alcohol on a cloth and wipe over the leaves, the alcohol kills and dissolves the scale insect on contact, Happy growing and thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and good luck with your German Empress I am sure it will recover well, XXXX

I posted some pics and a lady who specialises in the Epis, says it looks like a fungal condition called 'Botryosphaeroides', says extremely common in the German Empress. It's still so hot, we have days of 40 scheduled again 😩 I feel I should wait a bit till cooler and see it the over watering damage resolves. Then I will treat it soon, and probably repot, feed etc. I have 2 and they are massive. It's hard to see them change and would be devastated to lose them. Thanks so much 😊

im picking up the parent plants of the cuttings i took in spring, the owner is downsizing and giving me a 20 year old dragon fruit, and 5 enormous epiphyllum and a dozen or so large snake plants, i cant wait. im taking cuttings from a bunch of her other cactus and succulents too

some of the leaves are 4 feet long, i trimmed them a bit, they need some attention, ill put a few pics up before and after the repotting. i already trimmed 2 feet off the dragon fruit, ill repot that later too, its sort of growing sideways out of a basket

Hi Elizabeth :-D the good news is the long 'spears' are normal and these Epiphyllums produce them as support as in their natural habitats they grow these long spears to use to anchor themselves onto nearby vegetation and trees, you can either leave them on the plant or prune them off, but you dont need to worry about them at all, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend XXXX

Hey! Been awhile! I have a question for you about a disease my dad's Euphorbia Leuconeura caught that seriously spreads worse and faster than anything I've ever witnessed. He had me come over to help him treat it and we're getting there but I can't find out exactly what disease it is. He told me to wash my hands thoroughly after touching the plant so I didn't spread it onto mine at home and stupidly I figured I'd be okay. Well now it's on my Euphorbia Leuconeura's and on many plants. It starts with brown and red spots on foliage and then the leaves die and yellow. I've been trying bonides plant fungicide fungal treatment over and over and as it seems to at least keep the plant alive it's not a cure. Any ideas on what that disease could be?

Hi Sarah :-D so sorry to hear about your plants, it sounds like you have done the best thing with using the fungicide, and hopefully this should stop the disease from getting any worse, sometimes it can be due to a bacterial infection that can spread onto the other plants, and if its not fungal the fungicide may not help, but hopefully the fungicide should prevent it from getting worse, I am not sure of what it could be, but its best to keep all the plants that have been affected isolated from any of the rest of your collection, sometimes cold damage can show up like this too, but it definitely sounds like it is most likely due to a virus or fungal, you could also use Horticultural Neem oil mixed with horticultural soap as an extra treatment, I hope your plants make a full recovery and keep me updated on how they recover, thanks so much Sarah for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Tuesday XXXX

I don't like neem oil personally due to the smell, the oily residue, and I lost a couple from neem oil as well. I tried Bonide's neem/fungicide and wasn't a fan, if you have any other suggestions I'm open ears. Thank you so much for your prompt replies and wisdom ❤️

@@sarahjohnston4782 Hi Sarah :-D argh yes Neem oil can smell awful I agree, I always find its not too bad at first but the next day it gives off a horrid stale onion like smell haha, 3% Hydrogen peroxide can also be used mixed with water, this works really well for some types of fungus issues on plants but is not as effective as a systemic fungicide, a mix of 5ml of 3% hydrogen peroxide mixed with 250ml of water in a water spray can work well too, thoroughly spray the whole of the plant and under the leaves, and then re apply after about 5 days, I like to use RoseClear Ultra systemic fungicide, it is really effective for all types of both indoor and outdoor plants, I am not sure if its available outside of U.K though, keep me updated on how your plants recover XXXXX

My zig zag has a leaf with dark blood red marks and they go into the leaf making rough…is this sunburn?…I cut it off as it was spreading,can not find any examples to compare with so thought I would ask you!?..

Spider mites? Do you use rubbing alcohol in those. I inherited mine it’s probably 15 years old and is finally thriving just want to make sure it’s in prime health condition. One day I’ll see her bloom!

Hi Anthony, unfortunately these cacti love much higher humidity, but if you mist them daily with water and keep a saucer of water close to them this will help to add more humidity to the air, but its best to avoid growing them close to air conditioning as it will dry the leaves out too much, thanks so much for watching and have a wonderful Monday XXXXX

Hi Ved :-D I make my own potting mix of loam, ( John innes number 2 Loam soil ) horticultural sand and perlite, and I use it a ratio of Loam John innes 60% and sand 10% and Perlite 30% but you can also use a houseplant commercial soil and add extra perlite at a ratio of 50% houseplant soil and 50% perlite, but I am planning on making a video on How I make my own Epiphyllum soil very soon, thanks so much for watching and for your wonderful comment and have a fantastic Sunday today XXXX

My aloe plants have these dark spots all over their stems, it's stems are worst looking than yours. one got root rot which I cleaned and replanted. It's still alive but I had to cuz a big junk of the rizone. The other aloes are still growing its not bugs, my other plants aren't infected.

mardel3 My aloe vera had some black spots over the winter only on the lower leaves. I moved it to some better light and it stopped spreading. Then I cut off the bad leaves and repotted it and since spring came, it is doing better back in the old window since there is more light now.
