Honey Chauhan It takes a month in my experience from a spec of a bud to a full soccer ball size blossom ... they bloom around the full moon every warm month. A cutting from a leaf can take up to seven years to produce blossoms. A cutting from a stem, especially the thicker brown stems can take only three years. I never let the soil dry out for more than a few days as seems to stress the plant and then the leaves don’t recover easily, so I say keep the plant moist but not wet... I soak it one day then let it slowly get to almost dry... the timing of which depends on the humidity around it. If you build a strong arbor like structure for the stems to climb high, especially in a tall south facing or bay window a short distance away from the window, the leaves will produce flowers that hang down over your head when they bloom. You can know they are going to open when the blossom curves up in a J, and their petal tips loosen in the morning. And you can practically see them opening between seven and ten pm. By four to nine in the morning they softly close their massive firework like display and relax the whole flower down. My first plant is 20 years old and has now two very large “daughter plants”. Together they have produced twenty to forty blossoms opening over three nights. That is an experience of joy and amazement to the senses for sure! In the morning after they bloom, they look like soft pink white Christmas ornaments and only slowly dry out over a week, so they still bring beauty. The only blossom that comes close to the smell of the Queen of the Night is a lovely delicate white striped gladioli.

@@makosuganthb In my plants too there have always been some buds which only begin and then drop off. I noticed that it is only until a bud is about 2-3 cm long when this happens, not after. I also noticed that the ones that do. mot stay green, but begin to yellow, are the ones that drop off. I do not know why. I do know that the buds will not flower well or at all if during their flowering time they don’t have enough water. I think also that the plant needs a good amount of nutrition to grow many healthy flowers. I do let the pot dry out for a couple of days between watering, but no more than that without risking hurting the whole plant. If anyone else knows why some buds don’t survive, I would also be interested.

@@louisegogel7973 oh yess mine too after 2-3 cm of it's growth it happens. But it doesn't turn yellow it just darkens and then ultimately falls off. I think the soil in my pot is well nourished but the soil base has a lot of coco pit which isn't ideal but I had made the mistake a few months back withing knowing what is the right soil, even though it hasn't cased much harm as I have been watering once in 5-6 days as the top layer gets dried up but the lower portion are wet enough. I still don't know why one or two buds dry off though, wish someone would help me. And thank you very much for your reply :)

Epiphyllum oxypetalum is not Brahma Kamal although it resembles Brahma Kamala and is great for aesthetics and comes under least concerned plants, Uttarakhand's state flower is Saussurea obvallata which is the actual Brahma Kamal and it is and endangered species also its flower has an unpleasant smell contrary to the claim of fragrance. I have tried so many times to find the original plant but couldn't get it. Gr8 video though👍

My Epiphyllum oxypetalum have divinely wonderful smells... so lovely, we have sometimes camped out in the living room under the plant to be able to enjoy it all night long while we sleep. Someone else commented that she mentions Brahma Kamala, perhaps that is the plant smell you are speaking of then. I don’t know that plant, and that person also says, as you do, that this is not the same plant as Brahma Kamala. In my research, I agree, it is Epiphyllum oxypetalum, not Brahma Kamala. Where in the world do you live? If in the USA, i could get you a stem piece from one of my plants.

Firstly the plant should be old enough atleast 2 years old for it to bloom. Secondly do not place them in direct sunlight or in a dark location as it will not bloom. Another way to encourage blooming is make sure not to use a large pot. They do like to be root bound. The potassium,phosphorus and calcium present in dried banana peels will break down more quickly than any other organic fertilizer. Hope this info was helpful.

Megha Ranjani mine bloom every summer and live in my large south facing sunny bay window and love it there. I noticed one plant living near a flat west facing window did not bloom where there was less light!

Akshat Bahadur Singh you can place the plant in indirect sunlight atleast 6hrs a day during summers. Do not keep it in direct sunlight or the leaves will get burnt.

These plants do very well in a cactus mix soil...you can find it already in bags. They like well draining soil.

How old is the plant? It takes three to five years from a cutting depending on how old the cutting is. Is it in sunlight, rich soil, moist enough? I use a slow release pellet fertilizer made from chicken manure.

Mine are indoors because I am in Vermont in the USA where it would die with the first frosts of winter.

These plants do well in a regular cactus mix soil....you can find that in bags ready to go. They like well draining soil.

Megha Ranjani They usually grow up tree trunks under the canopy but get lots of sunlight too. Direct very hot sun burns their leaves for sure. They do well in warmth not cold. I am not sure how much heat they stand, but they thrive in the homes in Florida that I know of. If you put them outdoors after being inside, be sure they are away from direct light for two weeks, as with all house plants, or they get sunburned badly. The two weeks with a little morning and evening sun is best to acclimate them to direct sunlight... but keep them from full all day sun in my experience.

G Parikh fungal disease might be an indication for dark spots on the leaves. This usually occurs if water stays on the leaf surfaces for more than 6hrs. Fungal disease thrives more in low light, high humidity conditions. Make sure the soil dries out before watering again.

From my experience it needs sunlight: The parts of the plant that never get a touch of direct sunlight never bloomed and are more scraggly, less robust than those that get some direct sunlight.

Flowers bloom for one night only. In my experience, they come out once a month with the full moon and warm enough weather. I only get them four months of the year in New England USA, but someone in Florida who took a cutting from my plant has flowers coming for more months.

@@gaypapyrus How big is the plant? It takes about three years from a cutting of an older stem and about five years for a cutting of a leaf to establish itself and produce flowers if you also have enough sunlight, moisture, good soil, and some fertilizer.

Every summer now I have flowers once a month, three to four times... at first there were only one or two, but as the plant grew, there were more and more, and after I made a second and then third plant from broken stems, I sometimes have gotten 30 blossoms in one night during the full moon. If it is from a leaf cutting four years ago, it may be another three years before it can produce flowers. The stronger and brown der the stalk, the more the flowers it can produce.

Aggeliki Sirma the fact that the leaves are turning red could be an indication that your plant is getting “sunburnt”. It’s best if you place your plant under some shade during the hottest part of the day. This plant grows well in indirect sunlight. Hope this info was helpful for you😊
