Conversation from Epiphone product development. "Hey Marty, what do you want to do with all of these spare parts we have in the warehouse?" "I don't know. Put them together and make a bass, and we can sell it as a limited edition." And thus - a bass (boat anchor) is born.

Meh, Seymour Duncan makes aftermarket Ripper pickups, rotary switches are dirt cheap and a pickguard blank isn't that expensive either. Only thing that's way of and not easily swappable us the bridge. I'd say a badass bridge would be a more "vintage correct" option, since they were a popular replacement back in the 70's and 80's Sure, as a reissue it's an embarrassment, but as a mod platform it's great!

I've got a 74 Gibson Grabber and that makes a lot more sense than this, I'm not sure what Epiphone were trying to achieve with this barring the silhouette really. If you can find a nice Grabber, grab one as they're a nice player and have a really interesting sound. Plus, who doesn't like a sliding Bill Lawrence Humbucker on a bass?

Man this takes me back, my first "quality" bass was a limited 2009 Ripper II that I got for a steal of a deal. And let me tell ya, that thing was also a very very weird instrument. Unlike the originals, it had a 5-way switch instead of a 4-way and what I'm assuming was a way chunkier neck. It sounded awesome and was unique yet versatile, handled effects incredibly well, but it was easily the most unwieldy tree of a bass that I've had.

Pawn shop find for $250. Talked them down because the pickups had been swapped for a single basslines split p bass. I absolutely love mine. The maple with the brass nut/saddles has a lot of snap and warmth without being super bright. Weight is okay, body is big but I love that as a big guy. Most modern basses are tee tiny to me. I also love the Peavey T40 though, I most definitely have a type.

I owned a Gibson Ripper years ago. I liked the bass very much at the time I had it, but I eventually sold it to buy a Leo Fender Music Man Sting Ray as shown in my photo. The Leo Fender Music Man probably has the best neck out of the basses I've owned. I still have an American Fender Precision Deluxe, a Rickenbacker 4003 and the Music Man Sting Ray. They are all keepers and usually show up in the top 5 basses of those pros who review these instruments. There is no shortage of great instruments out there these days.

My first bass - back in the late 70s - was a Gibson The Ripper. I did like its looks and I did like the sound of the pickups. Plus, it had a rotary knob for different (maybe 6) pickup configurations. However, it was way too heavy though and I really disliked the bridge. Several years later I bought a Fender Jazz bass.

Did Lobster rate this zero claws? When the Gibson Ripper first came out in the 70's, I clipped a coupon from a music magazine and they sent me a flimsy small record describing the bass and playing the sounds that it made on different tone combinations. You kids have life so easy seeing all this stuff on You Tube. Thanks for another great video, Lobster,

This might be an awesome platform for building a G3 Rip(per)-Off! 3 single-coils (maybe there are some J-style pickups which come close to the G3 ones) on a self-cut pickguard. I wonder if they routed the whole middle section already or if you would have to do some milling.

Maybe due to covid alot more ppl are collecting to pass time!. Always curious how the inner electronics are different or “better” given the Japanese were quite good at copy n improve during those days; at one point is was some form of collaboration too but I am uncertain…. Maybe it will be good material for a 2 part story to you. Be glad they didn't go with the original Ripper bridge - the three point! It is an interesting beast. That body is so huge. Are you sure you want to move it on? In addition to home defense, it could come in handy for a zombie apocalypse. It's a combination battle axe and shield. So weird how deep the neck is set in the body and how far from the body end the bridge is. It's almost like Epiphone's take on a Vintage Modified. It's what someone might have done to a Ripper back in the day.

Gotta say, based on the pickup placement, that J in the bridge has more than a little Rickenbacker tone to it! Coming from the Rick, and now getting used to a J sound (I ended up putting some Fralins in my 70s CV Squier), I definitely like what this Ripper is doing there! Agreed about the rest, though; the front pickup is super odd sounding, and no way I'd wanna hang that boat anchor off my shoulder for a whole night!
