Love how the female zebras stand in a line like unimpressed teenage girls, as if they’re saying, “Who’s this guy? He’s walking our way.” Then after the fight: “Oooh, he looks hunky.” 😂

That's the nasty arithmetic of sexual reproduction. Females make a huge reproductive investment, so they have to be very picky. A male can conceivably impregnate many females at once, with little expenditure of time or energy. So, oversimplifying greatly, you end up with one of two possible systems. In one, the females mate with the best mate available. The males invest all their time and energy in demonstrating their dominance and competing with each other. A few males get most of the mating opportunities; the rest get few or none. In pair-bonding, the female mates exclusively with a single male, who redirects his energy away from dominating other males and towards child-rearing instead. This works for males if they can establish that the offspring are really theirs (only the absolute fittest lose out). For the female, she has to settle for a less desirable mate but gets a huge amount of help in exchange. In shows like this, you'll see lots of species where the winner-take-all rule is in play. That means most males won't win a mate. Showing the competition for mates makes for good TV, but people like a winner, so you actually see more successful males in TV than in real life. (BTW as I said these are gross generalizations. There are wrinkles. Even some pair-bonded species have cheating. Many species have a harem system where few or one very fit males monopolize a large group of females, with the lesser males policed or driven out. It's a complicated planet. But the math is what it is and you tend to see the same patterns appear in lots of different cases.)

Being a human is the cushiest possible way to live on this planet, what the hell are you talking about? That zebra fought and survived and waited for months, almost got his head bashed in first by the girl and then by several contestants, and when the ladies still found his charms lacking they abondoned him after a little fun. No man who puts in that much dedication into his body and career has to complain about lack of interest, and we humans even have help for those whose personality is a problem. Have you ever seen a zebra at a therapist or read a self-help book? Me neither. Don’t ever complain about human problems, having to live out there sucks infinite times worse

Zebra are grouped into harems where there is one dominant male with as many as 6 females and their foals in the group. All younger males with no harem would form bachelor herds and wait until they are big enough to start their own harem. Zebra stallions will fight with each other for females and will even go as far as stealing females from one another. If the female which is stolen is pregnant, the new male will rape her until such time as she has aborted the pregnancy. Abortion would be done by releasing hormones that would cause her body to reabsorb the fetus or miscarry or if she gave birth to a live foal it would be kicked to death by the male. This seems extreme but it ensures that the strongest genetics survive and the killing of another males young is not uncommon practice in the animal kingdom and is called infanticide.

I know this is 3 years old lol, but I also wanted to add that Zebra’s are one of the only equines to commit infanticide. Horses and donkeys will usually accept a foal with a different father if its healthy, only kicking out males when they mature. Donkey’s are slightly more aggressive however, similar to their closer Zebra relatives.

Not Grevy’s Zebra, which are featured in this video. They do not form harems of any sort. Their herd structure consists of mares and their foals, which are occasionally trailed by young bachelors.

@@wiseguy240Winston Educate yourself, there exist 2 main types of reproduction styles: those who form couples like many birds, mormosets, and others, and the one where the male doesn't contribute to raising the offsprings such as gorillas, zebras, cats, etc. At the moment humans tend to form stable couples, because raising a human kids takes 20 years and it's very hard for a female to do it alone. Therefore, talking about alpha males in the human population in nonsense.
