I paddle both Skis and K1 and in my experience, there is very little in it when paddling flat water. I do find the K1 more enjoyable to paddle, and they do generally provide a nicer wash to ride on. I will add, the ski is a more novice friendly, but the K1 is worth the effort.

I agree, the K1 is better from an ergonomic perspective, but demands more skill to race at high level than a ski.

Would be interesting to see comparison between your ICF boat and a V14 with small rudder. I'm 75 years old, and my top speed with a Nelo 560 surfski (2018, not the new one) and my V14 with 4" rudder was the same (8.1mph or 13kph) on deep flat water lake with no wind or current. My take is that I'm not powerful enough to overcome the increased wetted surface of the V14 to push it to it's full potential. I found the Nelo to be slightly more stable than the V14.

Ive found my friends V14 to run really well on flat water but it’s significantly more unstable. I haven’t compared my K1 at the same time as the V14 but just for stability alone I prefer my K1 for getting power down.

Great vid on the Gen 3 V12. I currently have a Gen 2 V12, and this was neat to see. Say, what is the soundtrack to your video? Would you be awesome to hear your jams! Thanks

Do you reckon if the conditions picked up a little (as they were ideal in this situation) as they might in more open waters where you intend to use it, then the ski could edge out the k1?

I raced this K1 against some top level ski paddlers near this section of the river earlier this year. I kept pace with them and at one point got ahead when I was able to cut across a shallow sand bank. They got away from me when a large pleasure cruiser went past and they were able to use the cruisers wake to get ahead while the same SL wake turned me sideways. But yes, in windy choppy weather skis do start to have the advantage hence why I wanted to see how the V12 went for the flat water races we do in open sections of river/estuary here.

Its actually an app called dashware.

The Gen 3 V12 is 6.2 m long and 43 cm wide. The K1 should be be only 5.2 m long. How wide was it? You should probably also share your weight as the added length of the V12 should provide more of an advantage for heavier paddlers, and less so if any for lighter ones.

I have an epic legacy K1 and an epic v10 gen 3, faster atm in the V10 due to not being 100% capable in the k1 yet. However my heart rate and stroke rate is higher in the V10 for any given speed. ergo this would indicate to me that the k1 is a faster boat, but i'm not faster in it yet..!.. Thats my goal to reach the point where the k1 is my fastest flat water boat. What I am learning in the K1 is making me much better in the ski, so the goal post keeps moving. k1's are excellent at developing hip rotation How are you finding the different ergonomics of the ski bucket over the open cockpit of a k1? Ski hump get in the way? Though newer skis tend to have lower humps than older models

You are spot on. Paddling a K1 will always develop better technique that can assist in being a better ski paddler, not so the other way. I started a ski paddler, took up K1 about 7 years ago and now do 95% of my training in a K1. On flat water Skis tend to feel very stable if you are spending most of your time in a K1.

What paddle did you use? It looks like my Epic mid wing paddle.

Yeah, but the K1 is designed to go very fast a straight line relying only on the paddler to get it on a plane.

Not sure whether you are being quite fair to the K1. From the very little I can see of the K1 it looks like a NELO Vanquish which is a K1 I absolutely love, but is quite long in the tooth. If true then it was like comparing the stats of a lovable 15 year old Mustang to a new Mustang. Also, the K1 is designed for a straight run and turns like a barge, and not so with the ski
