I'm definitely excited to what I will be able to create with the new tool's. I've been working on five game's so far and all of them will benefit from these new tool's and I can't hardly wait to see how all this will turn out. I'm telling you, love it or hate it, Epic has been the best thing happening to developers and artists this year, straight from their EGS share percentage (dont know whats the actual term) even ignoring a few problematic parts with the store itself, humongous Blender donation, giving away GBs of assets for free every week/month on UE marketplace, donating to Greg Zaal and team (guys behind HDRIHaven, Texturehaven) to now have 3DModelHaven for open source 3D assets and now buying Quixel and making much of their tools free for Unreal Artists and by limited extension, for everyone! I was so distraught by the recent Substance news and immediately wanted an alternative to SP to become a thing and now seeing that Mixer shall be that thing was completely unexpected, I thought it'd be just like Substance Alchemist but seeing that it shall have texture painting as well all for free is kind of an insane thing. It's safe to say I'm super glad Fortnite exists.

If you work with your own pieces from any 3d sofware gl creating a Atlas , Substance Designer is a industry standard for a reason. Mixer is more a softare you would start with if you dont have the time to learn the real deal. If you like drag in in sand texture from a photo instead of create your own alpha go ahead.

Does this also mean we will not be able to upload 3 asets to Maya for exemple, modify it and then export it to unreal? It doesn't really make sens to me and I am a little bit confused. Because Adobe made everyone mad by buying Substance and then making it a subscription-only and not including it in the Adobe CC sub, this is a nice stab at them to try and rub it in their face by taking the users and giving them these tools for free. I know they aren't nearly as good as Substance, but with Epic funding it now, they probably could be. It's also a fairly enticing way to try and sway people from Unity by offering the MegaScans for free.

    @Mea Ansel having a hard time putting my thoughts into words, but I'll give it a shot. I was thinking more of saturation of the market. In the same way that all the free assets Epic puts out monthly show up in projects everywhere now, we will see more games using these scans and materials. We'll see less hand crafted stylized stuff. We'll see more unoptimized games that will try to match the style of the free content they got. We'll have a lot more games that look good sure, but it's getting harder and harder to tell from a trailer now what will be a good game and what will be a junk and a cash grab. Asset flips are going to have an easier time blending in I suppose. That and now the artist market will be expected to know how to use these tools and every dude hiring out indies will expect AAA quality for a budget which really is a steal and unfair to those indies. IDK I see a lot of potential downswing to this awesome free content just as much as there is an upswing. All in all though I am excited to see that having quixel, blender, UE4, and some of these awesome other free applications and plugins, really does give dedicated indies the opportunity to go head to head with these stagnating and bullshit AAA companies. We'll be able to let more fresh blood into this system. We may lose some of the uniqueness of projects along the way though.

    @@lifeartstudios6207 ok i understand what you want to explain and i have to say that it quite worries me too. There are already a bunch of bad optimized copy-paste assets game on the market, and it is unquestionable that UE4 and the rise of blender have had a role in that (just look at the one-man "indie software house" that plague steam). Altough on the other hand the power of real indie software houses does not resides in graphics but in artistry, themes and the liberty of not having to please anyone but themeselves and their customers (which is why is a lot less stagnant than AAA company). With those assets i hope (and i'm sure) there will be some small company able to attract even more player with the goods of an indie's game and an higher graphic quality. It will be an hard and slow step by step work of refinement but in the end i'm sure there will be some beautifull gems. Just looking at games like Hellblade, i'm sure Ninja Theory would have been very happy Furthermore i don't know if it is appropriate to consider those assets as AAA standard because i see a lot of big company claiming their "magnificent graphic quality" with just little improvment of their old title. To this day the only graphics that really make me fell astonished is Death Stranding, a lot of the other AAA games seems just like copycat of one another. They have a feeling of standard AAA rather than AAA standards, i hope i expressed myself clearly, i am not very fluent in english In conclusion, there surely will be a LOT of junk, but i think it will be a good evil for all the indies that will benefit from a quicker and easier way to produce high quality graphics

    I'm trying to get my head around how to handle the logistics of this if using both engines. If I log in with my epic account everything is free (but I assume I can only use the content in unreal). If I log in with my paid subscription, for using assets in unity, then how does the quixel bridge downloader know which assets are which?

  • @123TheCloop

    @123TheCloop

    4 жыл бұрын

    I suspect it will be all down to UE4 asset packs. for instance, in UE4 all assets within the engine folder are just .ueassets so maybe they have the megascans content in this DRM protected asset 'mode' and ofc will only work inside of UE4 but if you have the subscription model from Quixel then I assume you would just download it like you currently would (to the PC) and import yourself. speculation on my part, but they must have separate asset 'designations' so they can know which is which.

    So here's the official 'workaround' for dealing with both engines. It's pretty much as I expected: "Megascans access is licensed for use only with Unreal Engine"..."If the end product is not in UE4, you will need an active subscription." "When you have 2 accounts, utilizing two accounts means that you will have to change file paths in Bridge when swapping between projects to facilitate the Terms and Conditions of each plan. Yes, you would have to re-download assets twice and I do recommend you keep your assets in 2 separate folders to avoid any issues"
