EP7 Hardcore History On Fire

Ойын-сауық

Dan and History on Fire host Danielle Bolelli do a crosscast together about Nazis, political spectrums, U.S. Presidents they want back and some other stuff. Basically it's a typical phone call between these two guys that an audience gets to hear for once.

Had a discussion with a friend, and it took me so long to realize that he was arguing from a fundamentally different world view than I. Basically, I hold the belief that your time is predetermined, but your actions are your own, and that you have to make that time count. His belief was that you are responsible for the time that you have in life, and so you have to reduce the threats to your existence in order to live as long as you can. I told him this, he told me to stop analyzing him, and we don't talk anymore.

We always have a few people who want to have a swing at folks and will argue that. So where do you draw the line of what is acceptable? Anything from a vague "Those people are rats to be exterminated" to "I'm going to buy a gun, go to this address and shoot people inside. Anyone who wants can come help." It's not a lot of people but their presence forces the rest of us to react to them. Right now it's a void. It's really hard for a smaller nation to get facebook or some other platform to do something. Facebook didn't even have local-language offices that could cooperate when someone collected funds for a terrorist movement.

I regurgitate his (and others') anecdotes, quoting him in debate class. All of the series("s)(?)(I.e. Genghis Khan, Death Throes of the Repubulic,) all of his Addendums, every thought-spew he records is pure gold. As a fellow Scorpio, Dan Carlin sets an example to follow. Thorough investigation, connection of subtle personas and events as only one who knows every other stereotypical personage COULD, mixed with reviews for obscure books that give unique perspectives on current and historical events, on subjects of interest to the discerning warlord or sage? SOLD. He should charge more; Probably the most under-rated podcast today. Also the most informative. You would do well to meditate on his words. Kustan

As an addendum to my original statement I wanted to point out that "trollish behavior" rather than thinking of certain individuals as being trolls might help some people to see this behavior (in themselves as well) when they are attempting to sabotage ideas presented in a place they should be welcome. There are so many different occasions that one might make a comment thinking they made a witty, funny or otherwise sharp response but did not concern themselves with wether it serves the discussion or not.

I have heard the "Nazi's were socialists" from some right wing types (being right of center I listen to a wide range of R commentators) and I think the reason it seems more popular recently has to do with the widespread use of the word Nazi as a means of discrediting someone. Something like a way to say "see, I'm the opposite of a Nazi because Nazi's are left". The word is such a put down that any way of avoiding association with it is very appealing, especially if it puts the negative connotation onto the opponent. It also might be a response to the seeming increase of socialists in American politics like Bernie and AOC, another means of showing how "extreme" these policies and politicians are to younger Americans who may not have an as biased view towards socialist policies. Niether of these are real researched points, I'm just spitballing here. I would love to hear what others think.

The way you're discussing the political spectrum seems designed in and of itself to reinforce certain political ideas that you would call centrist and automatically discredit everything else, an argument to "moderation" which conveniently is where people who argue for it sit, which people are combating by dissecting and redefining the terms. I do hope you can see how that is in and of itself a problematic form of redefinition that should be avoided

  • @farmerboy916

Moreover, places like the soviet union were not exactly for a minimum living wage and workers rights or non state controlled labor unions, and was also not exactly welcoming of what we today would consider progressive ideas. Do you see how that criticism is entirely arbitrary as you're not applying it evenly, and by saying "well nazi germany had all these traits and was clearly 'right wing'" that is disingenuous? As well, those big corporations under the height of nazi rule were effectively government controlled, as were markets. These traditional talking points are clearly irrelevant and nonsensical

The problem is they're trying to hold onto how it was defined in their youth for...clarity? The problem with that is the politics of their youth literally do not exist anymore. Everything has changed. Should the hard right still be monarchists now that there are almost no powerful monarchies (aside from a few places that would better be called theocracies)? I think Dan Carlin having this conversation he agrees with created an echo chamber where the two did not say anything particularly poignant. People group the two ideologies together because they were a lot closer than these two were letting on. The difference is that fascism is a second derivative of Marxism and Socialism is a first derivative. Let's say you lump a society like Imperialist Japan on the right... they are by far the furthest thing from the other two as it was just a shadow of expansionist Monarchism of earlier centuries with more powerful weapons. People are redefining the terms in a way that our generation understands. We use the political compass where right wing is more economic freedom and left wing is government intervention in the markets, with authoritarianism being north and libertarianism being south. We could use east and west, I suppose, but it's not really our fault people of Dan Carlin's generation are clinging on to a god awful way of defining ideologies that should have never been used past the ultimate fall of monarchism. Also, it's weird how they mention that we should look at the friends they keep for Hitler... yeah, he was sort of (half assed) allied to Japan (it was very cutthroat). He had the same kind of alliance with Stalin. And the biggest thorn in his side was Winston Churchill who is further right than any politician out there today. So looking at the company they keep does not mean anything at all. tldr; Dan Carlin is getting old and hates that language is evolving

We have a number of people who would like to take a swing at other humans, and talk about it on the internet. What kind of limit should there be on them? Anything from vagueness like "These people are rats" to "I'm going to this address with a gun, anyone who wants can join me." Not a lot of people, but they force the rest of us to consider them. Right now it's been pretty hard to stand up to facebook as a smaller nation. What are you going to do if you're someone like Madagascar or Java. You want the aid of the company on something, and they don't even have a local-language office.

Politicians today regularly say they are against freedom. It doesn't matter if they're selectively against freedom, no one is against the freedom they utilize and value. A violation of one right is a violation of the foundation of rights, which is self ownership and so a violation of all rights.

I think Steven Kotkin does a very good job of showing that Stalin was a through and through communist. I think the "Stalin wasn't a real communist" line of thinking is just people having trouble coming to terms with their personal beliefs. Stalin wasn't the only example cut from the communist cloth who came out that way...

Not even other communists like Stalin. There's moments pretty shortly after his death when they start to denounce the personality cult around him. Partly a way for the remaining leadership to clear their own names, you can argue.

I'm 24 minutes in and I'm confused. I don't think I've really ever heard anyone try to claim that radical leftists are Nazis, but I've definitely heard that radical rightists are. Maybe I'm just not exposed to as many of those kinds of discussions as Dan and Danielle? I've heard the horseshoe left-right thing before, but that's just a bad metaphor to try to hang on to a really flawed model. I like the "8 Values" approach much better.

"....We think in binary opposites that very rarely actually match reality." Bears repeating. I know very few people, no matter how staunchly they may proclaim that they are "progressive" or "conservative" that are truly ideologically consistent on this position if you put the partisan labels aside and actually just discuss specific issues. When you get down to it, people's political beliefs are generally far more complex and nuanced than what our current political system (and dialog) allow for. The attempt to shoehorn everyone into either "Box A" or "Box B" is certainly convenient from the POV of our two political parties and most media, but it just doesn't reflect what is really out there. Then again, there are plenty of people who are perfectly willing to put aside a fair bit of what they believe in order to feel the comforting identity of one tribe or the other. And in this way, politics becomes a sort of religion, in which reality is an inconvenience to be ignored and/or rationalized to fit the paradigm.

"Bears repeating. Bingo. There's also the fact that some positions to change things are viewed as "Conservative" (voter ID laws) while efforts to keep even several decades-old things alive are viewed as "Progressive" (Roe v. Wade). That really shows how bad these labels actually are as the main method of dividing people up politically.

For some reason we are failing in teaching history, even geology. My uncle stated 40 years ago that the rigour of the education system is weakening. I to scratch my head when I talk to kids today about historical figures and happenings and geography, they don’t know nothing??? It is all about basic reading and basic sums. No logical reasoning, of investigative thinking. Are we deliberately dumbing down? so we become only emotional reactive sheepeople? Sheepeole need dogs to be told what to do and where we go. Is that what we want? Or is that what we are now? Good show!

I think a big issue with the right left redefinition are the alternative terms like conservative. If you are in 1920s Germany, conservatively returning to a militaristic dictatorship is a possible line. If you look at the US and try to get as close to the roots as you can, you have things like have no standing army and lack of government at all. That makes seeing the Nazis as conservative a little hard.

  • @SusCalvin

There are conservative movements in 1930's Europe. People who could think the aristocratic ideals are best, that some people are just of better class than others. Or that it was a mistake to remove the kaiser. Or just people who think the strong nation-state is nice, and should provide a measure of welfare to its citizens. The christian democrats are a pretty interesting lot. I'm not sure they have any equivalent in the USA.

I'd love to hear Dan and someone else read and analyze general Sherman and General Hoods correspondence running up to the burning of Atlanta. Dan could read the letters from one perspective (Sherman PLEASE) and someone else from Hoods and then talk about the backstory concepts of Honor and chivalry, respect between warriors and how that juxtaposes the savagery of war. Talk about how each side tries to justify itself through manipulation of facts and public opinion. I'm asking a lot.
