Daniele Bolelli the fabulous host of “History on Fire” and I fanboy out over archaeology. We had some inexplicable audio problems at times with the recording, so hopefully that doesn't detract from the greatness of the guest.

Wow, catching a Dan Carlin video less than an hour after release? It's a good day!
The amount of KZread ads that interrupt this episode is exhausting...

I loved the last cross-cast with Daniele; keen to get my teeth into this!
As always great topic, just your intro got my brain clicking on all 8. I never thought about the people from 1000's of years past and what they must have thought about there history!
Always amazing content please keep in mind a lot of us listen on mobile devices with finite volume capacity

Always carefully choosing the name of the topic to line a conversation crossing alot of topics ❤
Thank you Dan
Could you do a video on the history of primary sources? Like the history of these different historians end like those Roman historians that have been used as sources? And then talk about how different memoirs and documents and archaeological things have been interpreted and reinterpreted, and given more or less value over the years? Just the history of history? Like how Wilson's history books or other important people who had written books, which are used as sources about them as people, and less so about the events written about inside the books anymore. The use and reinterpreting of history sources by politicians, governments, and people.. Would also be really cool to have a video about why we should not be getting rid of statues, or stop teaching history about general Lee and the American civil war. As a Northerner myself, the way I see it, is general Lee was the face of the confederacy. Had he wanted to, he could have told his men to fight a long drawn out guerilla war/Vietnam style, conflict .. Instead? He not only had his men surrender and put down their weapons, but he had not done any sort of stirring of hornet's nest and went off to Retire as a professor at a college . I think that his decision to surrender there is very understated and how valuable it was to the country, and it's something that a lot of other men wouldn't do...in his position. Look at what is happening in Ukraine! Similar of how the story of Cincinnatus was seen as a myth, until Washington did the same thing.. So I think we need to as a country recognize aunt honor generally and that decision of his.. So if there's ever conflict your issues in the future his example would be one that people look to. Similar to how Washington had read the Greek and Roman classics, he had heard the story at Cincinnati's, and likely wanted to emulate that kind of role model.
First, thank you so much Dan I’ve been on a serious binge
What a treat!
Google recommends this pod weekly. Ive listened to it 5x times. Here goes 6x....
Thanks Dan. This'll be good.

@@jakethibault2890 I suppose, but speaking as a non American: the Civil War seems to me to be a small part of a much larger story that in itself didn't have much impact on the rest of the world. It's interesting as an episode in the history of the abolition movement, or slavery, but for just that I'd say it's somewhat overexposed already. I don't see why it's time to talk about it, when there's still so many other subjects on the table.

Love this conversation. As someone who works in archaeology present (CRM archaeology in Ontario, Canada), it's best described as "damage control," prior to infrastructure development. In Canada we have a long history of removing indigenous peoples from their traditional lands, and actively removed them from their cultures through residential school systems, or outlawed practices, like the potlatch completely. The sooner archaeology can be put into the hands of indigenous peoples for the process of reconciliation the better; provinces, municipalities, developers and land owners don't understand the importance of the work that needs to be done because it puts a hold on their infrastructure development (whether public or private) and financial gains. Archaeology, like many things in Western society, needs to distance itself from capitalist and colonial ideals.

If anybody wants to read an encyclopedia article about Gonazlo, I suggest using the Spanish version of Wikipedia. The English one did not do it justice and for some reason people love to gut all the good information out of articles because CiTaTiOn nEeDeD despite there being plenty of available sources. It frustrates me to no end when I find a French or Spanish wikipedia article that has all kinds of cool information while the English version paints a very different picture. Another example of this would be the Forces Occultes article on French Wikipedia.
on the topic of “lets wait until we have the tech” to explore certain things it reminds me that we are that middle layer that the archeologists of the distant future will either barrel through or peel back with care
Can't make out what Danieli is saying. Very muffled

Dan I love you to bits my man but you have to do something about the atrocious audio quality of these podcasts. The microphone on your phones isn't good enough, especially your guest here.
