Ep166: Bakersfield Temple Spire Causes Ire: LDS Members Told to Send Emails In Support
****Clarification: When we received these emails there was no date. We were able to clarify with the senders of the emails that these had originally gone out on March 17. This means that the LDS email campaign asking members to write letters and specifically mention the steeple height, has been in force for several months.
On this temple update Rebecca and Landon discuss new information about the Bakersfield, CA proposed temple.
The last news article we read about this temple included the statement that the church had tabled the plans to mollify neighbors. This does not seem to be the case based on new information.

I'm so sick and tired of the MFMC trying to muscle its way into communities. All they're doing is ticking the residents off, creating a divide, lying about the "significance" of the steeple, and the "email writing campaign-so ridiculous!. 😠🤬 I'm so proud of NEMO for flying to Texas and speaking the truth. Thank you for your dedicated coverage of this and the support you are giving the residents of the affected neighborhoods! You guys rock! 😊😊 BTW I drive by the Redlands temple everyday on the way to work and its certainly does not add anything to the neighborhood or the city of Redlands. Ridiculous! 😆😆

Ironic that many homeless live in the shadows of CA’s largest temple- LA, yet its parking lot is completely empty of cars practically everyday of the week, except Sat?! No appts even available weekdays. $1 Trillion Mormon cult led by Q15 con men can’t get or don’t want any members to do temple work there. Pictures taken daily of the homeless & empty LA parking lot for YEARS Now!

Did you know that the church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints made a college education available to anybody on the earth who wants one, for pennies on the dollar? Has any of the organizations that you’ve joined since you left the church done that? Oh wait you haven’t probably joined any other organizations because what you are now is called a NotSomething.

When your leaders are asking you to lie in order to get what they want, that should tell you all you need to know about your church. Anyone who claims to be the true "Prophet" of God would never push you to lie and bully your neighbours. The real irony in all of this is that one of the questions a member is asked during their temple recommend interview is "are you honest in your dealings with your fellow man" or at least it was when I was a member. The hypocrisy of even asking that question to receive a temple recommend when the members are being asked to lie in order to get the temple built. I have absolutely no respect whatsoever for the current leadership but I do have the utmost respect for those members who have the ethics that their leaders lack by having the courage to speak up and tell the truth.

You two are tireless in your commitment to exposing the duplicitous nature of temple building. Thank you both! The church needs to wake up and smell the coffee. It is doing itself no favors by pushing these outlandish claims of size matters. I feel so badly for the residents that have to be saddled with the “great and spacious building”. Even if I were still Mormon I certainly would not want that monstrosity built in my backyard! Yuck! Have to add the LIGHTING! Ugh! I have neighbors that have really bright spotlights on at night. It’s ridiculous. It will never be night again for those poor residents if that behemoth is built.
I’m grateful to you both for exposing these outrageous scenarios. The LDS Church should be ashamed of themselves. 🤬
Why can’t the LDS church just follow the law and zoning codes? Anybody remember the 12th article of faith?

Not only can most residents not enter, their community will not receive any supporting Tax Revenue from the Property.
And don’t forget about the possibility of 2 years of construction noise and chaos in your neighborhood before completion of the monster sized building that you can only visit once before it opens and never again 😱
36 stakes assigned to CAs largest Mormon temple, LA temple district. Yet, it’s parking lot is empty every weekday, Sundays too. Sat & some evenings is the only time it seems to be in use. WTH?! Homeless live outside its walls & in its shadows. Jesus weeps!

Sorry...you misread it. She said parking lot is empty during the week and Sundays too. Only cars on Saturday and some during the week...implying that its open on Sundays...and so there are no cars there on Sunday because it is closed on Sunday. She's trying to imply nobody is going to the temple...however you have to make reservations weeks in advance to attend a session most times...so....
Following with much interest! I am in the Cincinnati temple district and I predict this will happen here. I've already looked at the zoning laws.
Working around the clock to share the news! Thanks guys!
This is SO tower of Babel, if we considered the tower as more glorious than the heaven it was pointing to.
Why not play by the same rules of engagement that kirton and McConkie adhere to? If every person who “like” these temple videos writes an email and identifies themselves “As a member of the community I oppose the height and lighting of the temple as currently proposed.” We are, after all members of the Mormonism podcast community! 😀
Compare what happened in Tooele, Utah. The church did relocate the temple due to infighting among the members. Maybe that is the secret to getting changes from the temple dept... dissension in the ranks.
This whole thing INFURIATES ME. And I’m so heartbroken. I thought even the church I LEFT was better than this.
There was a person that said they choose residential areas for the peace and serenity that they want around the temple….. yet there is the Taylorsville? Temple is pushed right up to the I-215 highway. Now when I go to see patients in their homes there I am in traffic jams trying to get off the highway due to members using crosswalks , weddings taking pictures and massive numbers of people during the week walking around in Sunday clothing dominating the roads and looking for parking . It is a mess.
I would love to see larger, national news sources cover this as well but I feel like they are afraid of the wrath of the church sometimes 😵💫. Thank you Landon and Rebecca for bringing all this to light!!
Take all those empty stake centers, erect a cinder block wall in the middle, build a beautiful endowment & sealing room, and place a temple recommend guard at the door. Dedicate it, and call it good. Baptisms in the existing font.
Thank you for plans to play the entire Fairview city council meeting! I could not find it on their website. I'm looking forward to hearing the entire meeting and your commentary.
Thank you Rebecca and Landin for your voices You are loved and appreciated :) for all the hard work you do Some day I would love to chat about my story . Your podcasts bring sunshine into my soul 🌻😊💛🌻😊💛
Lol….you may have gotten the name of one town wrong but you and Landon are bringing important information into the light. Following ALL the temple updates from far northern Maine
Bakersfield broils in the sun, so I giggled at the objection that the temple height would block the sun for part of the day. That feature would make me say Yay, Put it right here next to me! lol But of course I stand with Bakersfield and their right to have their building codes respected. And the light pollution would be maddening. I get bitter over immediate neighbors keeping even a porch light on at night. I understand, and even agree with, their desire to deter varmints, but I'm still resentful at having to wear a sleep mask in my own home. And the poor birds....
"I love to see the phallus, it's one hundred plus feet tall...." (sung to the tune of "I love to see the temple")
The crazy thing is that Kirton McConkie are the ones who can't give an inch. The law firm is the only one who is going to suffer from compromise, good-will and neighborlyness.
Maybe they are secretly planning for space shuttles in each spire for a future trip to the expanse.

We should all write letters to the redacted names to let them know we don't like spiritual bullies.
I agree that a whole lot of good could come out of this debate, instead of which the whole area, who are non Mormons will begin to loath the church because of the bullying tactics it is using. The church is using underhanded and unsavoury methods to get it's way. Thanks for all the work you put into your pod casts.. it's always enlightening.

Totally agree. I would go on further to say that many current members who live by their ethics and disagree with these tactics will consider leaving the church. I really don't know what they think they will achieve by this behaviour but I believe it will completely backfire in the long run.
I just don't understand why they (LDS church) just don't buy property in a location that is properly zoned. Nobody, for the most part anyway, is against a temple being in their town. Why not build these temples in city center areas that would benefit the city much more than out in a residential neighborhood.

An LDS member at the Fairview town council meeting That they purposely place their temples in quiet residential areas because of their peace and tranquility. They also mentioned that the height of the steeple will be 173 feet and will be lit with millions of lumens at night. They are literally robbing our quiet neighborhood of its current peace and tranquility.
"We will continue the dialog until you see things our way"
Is it Pres. Nelson’s ego that is determining the height of the steeples?!?!
Rebecca and Landon, maybe you, or someone else, can create a temple resistance packet to help future communities with problamatic temple sites or construction. It could contain relevent information about steeple height, or lack thereof. Emails sent to residents of other towns as examples of manipulation and tactics. Of course any videos of leaders speaking about the non importance of the physical and architectural design of the temple in relation to spiritual practice. I'm sure there's more. But obviously the church intends to keep employing this tactic at every temple site. Maybe a way to help is an easier way inform, at least in a basic way, any community experienceing this.

I just finished sending an email to the Planning Commissioner and Ward members of Bakersfield, as a non-resident like the LDS is asking its non-resident members to do. No one has mentioned that the steeple is a falic symbol for the old men who haven't seen theirs in many many years.
Commenting to help.
Homeowners need to do a class action against the monstrosity, for loss of property value and demand compensation.
The Bakersfield area just experienced a 4.3 earthquake this past April. I can’t imagine living right next to that temple and seeing it start to crumble on my home during an earthquake.

When we moved from Bakersfield to Tehachapi as a kid it was a tiny town with one stop light. I couldn't believe how much bigger it is now when I took my kids a few years ago. Still have the square ice cream though!
The Mormon show ward radio did an episode about the temples and making fun of people that didn’t want it in their town. It seems each side is isolated in their echo chambers. In the comments, they claim to have reached out to “anti-Mormon” podcasts and were ignored. You should do a collaborative episode with them and talk about details and where to find common agreement. That would definitely be an episode worth watching!
I think the temple spires are like Pinocchio's nose. The bigger the lie, the higher the spire!
What happened with the Fairview Temple, any decision yet? This is getting ridiculous.
The bottom line I’m seeing here is the church lies. Give us two months to address your concerns… oh, no, wait… that’s not exactly what we’re planning to do.
And why does Bakersfield have an issue with tall buildings??? They have several highrises, one even makes the list of tallest skyscrapers in the US at 176 ft.
@Capecurl
11 күн бұрын
FYI - 176 ft is not even close to being one of the tallest skyscrapers in the United States - the shortest of the top 10 skyscrapers in the US is 1,200 feet tall. Yes, Bakersfield has some tall buildings in certain areas where zoning allows for it. The current location of the proposed temple is zoned for maximum height of 60 ft. If the church would like their temple to be over 60 ft, then move it to the part of town that allows for that height.

This Temple is going into a residential area, where family homes are. It's not in zoned areas for tall buildings.
The tall spires are for the second coming of Christ. Jesus needs to be able to see the temples from space.

It is important to think like they do. The leadership, not the rank and file members, have a totally different philosophy. It is called "Do what thou wilt", and comes from the esoteric and occult belief system called Thelema, which was started officially in the West in the early 1900s by Aleister Crowley. The original belief system is actually much older and is from ancient pagan practices. The Mormon church is only an overlay of Christianity, with paganism at the core. Even the raising of the arm to the square at baptisms and in the temple circle is pointing to and honoring the ancient sun god.
