Ep166: Bakersfield Temple Spire Causes Ire: LDS Members Told to Send Emails In Support

****Clarification: When we received these emails there was no date. We were able to clarify with the senders of the emails that these had originally gone out on March 17. This means that the LDS email campaign asking members to write letters and specifically mention the steeple height, has been in force for several months.
On this temple update Rebecca and Landon discuss new information about the Bakersfield, CA proposed temple.
The last news article we read about this temple included the statement that the church had tabled the plans to mollify neighbors. This does not seem to be the case based on new information.

I'm so sick and tired of the MFMC trying to muscle its way into communities. All they're doing is ticking the residents off, creating a divide, lying about the "significance" of the steeple, and the "email writing campaign-so ridiculous!. 😠🤬 I'm so proud of NEMO for flying to Texas and speaking the truth. Thank you for your dedicated coverage of this and the support you are giving the residents of the affected neighborhoods! You guys rock! 😊😊 BTW I drive by the Redlands temple everyday on the way to work and its certainly does not add anything to the neighborhood or the city of Redlands. Ridiculous! 😆😆

When your leaders are asking you to lie in order to get what they want, that should tell you all you need to know about your church. Anyone who claims to be the true "Prophet" of God would never push you to lie and bully your neighbours. The real irony in all of this is that one of the questions a member is asked during their temple recommend interview is "are you honest in your dealings with your fellow man" or at least it was when I was a member. The hypocrisy of even asking that question to receive a temple recommend when the members are being asked to lie in order to get the temple built. I have absolutely no respect whatsoever for the current leadership but I do have the utmost respect for those members who have the ethics that their leaders lack by having the courage to speak up and tell the truth.

You two are tireless in your commitment to exposing the duplicitous nature of temple building. Thank you both! The church needs to wake up and smell the coffee. It is doing itself no favors by pushing these outlandish claims of size matters. I feel so badly for the residents that have to be saddled with the “great and spacious building”. Even if I were still Mormon I certainly would not want that monstrosity built in my backyard! Yuck! Have to add the LIGHTING! Ugh! I have neighbors that have really bright spotlights on at night. Temple is pushed right up to the I-215 highway. Now when I go to see patients in their homes there I am in traffic jams trying to get off the highway due to members using crosswalks , weddings taking pictures and massive numbers of people during the week walking around in Sunday clothing dominating the roads and looking for parking . It is a mess.

Bakersfield broils in the sun, so I giggled at the objection that the temple height would block the sun for part of the day. That feature would make me say Yay, Put it right here next to me! lol But of course I stand with Bakersfield and their right to have their building codes respected. And the light pollution would be maddening. I get bitter over immediate neighbors keeping even a porch light on at night. I understand, and even agree with, their desire to deter varmints, but I'm still resentful at having to wear a sleep mask in my own home. And the poor birds....

I just don't understand why they (LDS church) just don't buy property in a location that is properly zoned. Nobody, for the most part anyway, is against a temple being in their town. Why not build these temples in city center areas that would benefit the city much more than out in a residential neighborhood.

Rebecca and Landon, maybe you, or someone else, can create a temple resistance packet to help future communities with problamatic temple sites or construction. It could contain relevent information about steeple height, or lack thereof. Emails sent to residents of other towns as examples of manipulation and tactics. Of course any videos of leaders speaking about the non importance of the physical and architectural design of the temple in relation to spiritual practice. I'm sure there's more. But obviously the church intends to keep employing this tactic at every temple site. Maybe a way to help is an easier way inform, at least in a basic way, any community experienceing this.

FYI - 176 ft is not even close to being one of the tallest skyscrapers in the United States - the shortest of the top 10 skyscrapers in the US is 1,200 feet tall. Yes, Bakersfield has some tall buildings in certain areas where zoning allows for it. The current location of the proposed temple is zoned for maximum height of 60 ft. If the church would like their temple to be over 60 ft, then move it to the part of town that allows for that height.

It is important to think like they do. The leadership, not the rank and file members, have a totally different philosophy. It is called "Do what thou wilt", and comes from the esoteric and occult belief system called Thelema, which was started officially in the West in the early 1900s by Aleister Crowley. The original belief system is actually much older and is from ancient pagan practices. The Mormon church is only an overlay of Christianity, with paganism at the core. Even the raising of the arm to the square at baptisms and in the temple circle is pointing to and honoring the ancient sun god.
