🏰 EP 74: DREDGING A CASTLE MOAT : - Chateau Life

We're trying to dredge the Moat!
Chateau du Bailleul is surrounded by a water filled moat and it hasn't been looked after properly for over 60 years so it is nearing the end of its life without serious maintenance; with the digger we've borrowed we're seeing if we can change that

    Do you know that money you get from the patron account if it only goes to restoration and upkeep of the chateaux and grounds can be tax free? Get an accountant if you haven't already. Stephanie found this out and realized she didn't have to lay 49% tax on patron no money.

    Not sure if it’s available in France, but in the US we can hire a vacuum-truck service essentially a truck with a huge canister on back that suctions out the silt, filters and returns the water to the source… might be worth some research…

    When transferring plants, rose bushes in this case, you need to cut back most of the foliage to reduce the strain/shock to the plant and encourage root growth. Weeds will still grow from seed in the mulch put over barrier.

    In the US lots of people use barley straw in bundles, floating in their ponds, to clean the water. It lets off enzymes that suppress the algae. Look it up - it's effective and cheap.

    Putting the, "weed barrier", down with the wood chips covering the bed will Not.prevent weeds. The seeds of weeds germinate under the chips because of the darkness and moisture. Their micro roots permeates the barrier, thus making it harder to pull them out. I had this exact problem. I put the barrier down on several meters, and the seeds came up with a vengance. Learned the hard way.

    Both elements need doing but I do think the dredging is key to improving the water quality / visibility. I have a large koi pond and aeration is crucial in the warmer months but not really required during the cooler more wetter months. Clearing leaves etc out is the only way to keep a more balanced PH level and better levels of visibility at this time of year. If you wait a few months to get the funds for the aeration system the summer will be coming to an end so I would look to do the dredging after all the leaves have fallen this autumn and then install the aeration system in late Feb / early March ready for when the blanketweed etc starts to grow as the water temperature begins to rise.

  • @ChateauLife

    @ChateauLife

    The issue is the cost of the dredging may well mean it isn't done anytime soon so the aeration system is necessary in the meantime to save the wildlife

  • @ChateauLife

    @ChateauLife

    @@ChateauLife actually the soil build up is very minimal and takes many years to be a quarter inch and it does create the best soil for the plant roots. Hi Phil and Angelina. Great to see a start on the dredging of the moat. I would consider that attempt a win as it gave you the opportunity to gauge the size of the task ahead. One thing I am not aware that you have considered is what to do with the huge amount of soil which is going to come out of the moat. Do you have a low area that you can fill, with consideration for allowing the water to drain back into the moat. The amount of soil / mud will be great in volume. One solution to this could be to ask a neighbouring farmer if he / they want it for their fields as this stuff will be very rich in organic matter and will fertilize their fields at little cost. Just transport. Phil as an out of the Box suggestion have a look and see if you can purchase a second hand Sullage pump, these things are used by councils to suck up muddy areas which machines can not access. If you could find one you could suck up the mud, leaving most of the water in the moat and this system would allow you to dredge smaller areas at a time as you please. You obviously will need to be in the moat and moving the intake nozzle around by hand but it may be possible to drop it into an area and leave it there for a few hours at a time and let it do its` thing. This system would be far more affordable then hiring a 30 tonne excavator with an extended reach arm. The only down side to this system is the length of outlet pipe if you want to shift the mud a long way from the moat, but you may be able to hire the pipe from someone. Anyway, Great effort with the 3 tonner, good luck with completing the task later. Kind Regards. David. Down Under.

  • @ChateauLife

    @ChateauLife

    The area of land where we we're digging from needs raising and it gets water logged and there is an access to it from the fields which needs building up so a large part of the soil that is removed will go to that; also a reasonable size pile to dry out for compost and to backfill behind the retaining walls of the banks which will be rebuilt at the same time. Will definitely look at the pump you mention; thanks so much!

    If you clear the whole moat one year then you're likely to clear out most of the things you like. The dragonflies live in water for two years as a larva. The bloodworms that fish love, need that mix of water and areas of anaerobic decay. You have got a very complex aquatic environment. If you want to clear the water you may need to prune the trees back as they produce a lot of leaves that end up in the water. They also reduce a lot of light which will help oxygenating plants. They would help restore the water quality. You may be advised to seek advice from local concanavalin groups to see if they could offer guidance for a contribution. But if you dredge it like you plan then you are only removing the bulk of the biomass but not addressing the underlying conditions. Another way to remove sludgy mass is to find a local farmer which has a water pump and extension tube which runs off the hydraulics of the tractor. It allows you to pump the debris some distance away also.

  • @ChateauLife

    @ChateauLife

    It wouldn't be the entire moat in one year due to time, cost and of course how that changes the ecosystem we have here. All the trees need cutting back severely and many need removing; we do that as we can with out time and equipment (Very large cherry picker and commercial wood chipper etc) but ultimately undoing what is at least 60 years of things being left to their own devices isn't easy.

    The carp are bottom feeders and will always stir up mud. In Japan they grow the koi carp on in muddy ponds like this and only when selling them on do they move them to clear water so they can be admired. The carp are less stressed in muddy waters. If you have problems with gnats you could look at fish like golden orfe (if Allowed under French law) or fish like Rudd. They will eat insects in the upper water to surface levels and add movement. The Rudd is silver but there are golden variants too. With oxygen lines be aware that fish don't like crossing lines of bubbles. In some areas they are used like fishing nets to allow fish to be concentrated and then collected.
