EP 7: Want to start a farm sanctuary?
Is it your dream to rescue and care for farm animals?!?! As Hogs & Kisses has just opened this year, we know all about what it takes to start a farm sanctuary from the ground up! We interviewed three amazing people who are incredible influences in the farm sanctuary world.
Jill Tedeschi from Healthy Herd Consulting - Jill carries nearly a decade of farmed animal sanctuary experience, including eight years in shelter leadership.Spanning these years, Jill has been directly involved in the care decisions of more than 2,000+ individuals. She consults rescues and sanctuaries with all their needs. Visit her at healthyherdconsulting.com and she offers some free online training too.
Lenore Braford from Piedmont Farm Animal Refuge - Lenore Braford is the Founder, interim Executive Director, and Animal Care Director at the Refuge. Her drive to advocate for populations in need began in middle school when she began working with children with disabilities. That work continues today, but her circle of compassion was widened to include farm animals when she began to question how our society views and treats them. Support The Refuge at piedmontrefuge.org/ and they provide loads of information on veganism and community events in Pittsboro, NC.
Justin Van Kleeck from Microsanctuary Resource Center - Justin spends most of their time working at the Triangle Chicken Advocates sanctuary, which they and partner, Roz, founded in 2014, and which inspired them to start The Microsanctuary Movement together later that year. Though the microsanctuary model in many ways focuses on typically farmed species, any vegan home can be a microsanctuary when caring for animals who aren’t usually seen as “companions.” You can find their resources at microsanctuary.org.
Also we repeatedly mention an amazing resource called, The Open Sanctuary Project found at opensanctuary.org, throughout this episode that is a treasure trove of information for anyone wanting to start a sanctuary and those already dedicated to rescue or sanctuary efforts.

Support from Serbia! I am the only vegan in my village of 6,000 inhabitants. We had a vegetarian in the village, but he changed his mind after ten days. :) In twenty years I have saved over 1000 animals and only my money has been invested in them. I hope that civilization in the true sense of the word will one day hit my country as well. To be completely honest, my hope is currently encouraged by your video, so I can't guarantee that I will feel the same tomorrow when reality hits me in the head. I'm kidding, optimism is what gives animal lovers the strength to fight for a better world. :)

@@hogskissesfarmsanctuary133 We accept absolutely all types of animals, and we mostly forward carnivores to other shelters. My mother and sister are not vegans and currently care for 12 cats and 11 dogs. I prepare food only for those animals that do not eat meat, but I love all animals equally. I used to have a lot of animals from the farm, and now I am dedicated to domestic and wild injured birds and cubs that have fallen out of their nests. We have a magpie that has been with us for 12 years and that behaves like a domestic cat. We have a 15-year-old sheep, a 14-year-old pig and a 32-year-old parrot. I am most proud of the longevity of our animals. A few days ago, someone tied up an old sick goat in our garden, so we take care of it. Animals like hamsters and aquarium fish are just an incidental obligation. :)

I'm a vegan and proud to be one. I don't care what anyone says or thinks about my being vegan, if more people actually look at how animals are treated for meat...they would join us in the Fight AGAINST CRUELTY. I love these sanctuaries and try to do all I can to support them and any PRO ANIMAL LIFE organizations.

Just watching videos of animals being hurt takes a huge stress toll on all of us who care. So having all of those responsibilities on top of all of the other stress must be huge. Congrats to these lovely ladies.

Thank you all SO much! I'm preparing to hopefully open an animal sanctuary and trying to be practical and gather as much information as I can to understand what I'm getting into and be responsible. This video was so thoughtful, helpful, and encouraging but realistic. Well done and congrats on your new sanctuary and beloved animal friends! You two should do a video on how you met and how this all came to fruition if you haven't already. Cheers! XOXO

I hate how Crabs and Lobsters are killed. I think it's horrible and I have never wanted to eat them. I want them saved and allowed to do what they were made for...CLEANING THE BOTTOM OF THE OCEAN. THEY ARE SCAVENGERS. I can't see eating them at all.

@@sharonandrews6985t’s sick and disgusting how people keep them alive in restaurants then cut, boil, and broil them alive. Fish and animals like octopuses, lobsters, and crabs feel an agonizing amount of pain when being butchered alive. I’m working to start a farm sanctuary to take in as many slaughterhouse survivors as possible. From chickens to ducks to sheep and cows and horses. Any farm animal that you can think of that is used and mistreated for milk, feathers, meat or anything else. I do not have the space to take in rescue fish 😢 but if some rescue lobsters, a handful of fish, or something like an octopus would make its way over to me, I wouldn’t have the heart to turn it away and I’d find space and supplies for it. People need to stop hurting animals. It’s so sad 😭 I will never understand how some people KNOW what goes on in the kitchen of seafood restaurants, and STILL eagerly eat an animal that was brutally murdered less then ten minutes ago

So glad I found this video. I've been vegan now for 20 years vegetarian 10 years before that. I guess I have a micro sanctuary. We all dream of the dream of the giant Sanctuary on hundreds of acres but it's not realistic I didn't realize what it was called until today. I live in the middle of a small unopened Western ranch Town I'm the only vegan probably for probably 100s if miles. I totally set my whole entire yard up front and back to accommodate my animals which I call the spoiled rotten animal refuge. They all have been rescued from hoarding situations or farms for " food'. I feel like I've been losing my mind for the last couple years trying to keep it together while living around all these type of people and the only ones trying to save animals. I don't have the funds or the property to go massive. But I do have three turkeys two chickens a goat two desert tortoises and two pot belly pigs and it is a full-time job and itself just to take care and spoil the ones I have. Everybody eats gourmet salads in the morning and in the evening and free feed throughout the day. I was volunteering at my local food bank on Fridays just to get all the leftover food at the end of the day which was helping. Well I'm glad there's other people out there that are like me I don't feel so madd anymore. Thanks for vid.
