EP-61 | India’s Rising Soft Power with leading American Sociologist Professor Salvatore Babones

Professor Salvatore Babones is an American sociologist, academician and higher education commentator who is currently an associate professor at the University of Sydney and an adjunct scholar at the Centre for Independent Studies. He has authored over a dozen books and academic articles and writes about Asia’s role in the global political economy with special focus on China and India. Babones criticized democracy indices for downgrading India’s ranking under the Modi government in 2022, which won him followers among Indian conservatives, while liberals grew suspicious of him. Babones is also a social media buff and has a huge fan following in India. In this edition of Podcast with Smita Prakash shot in February 2023, Babones talks about western biases against India and how a handful of intellectuals vilify India on the global stage in connivance with western media outlets. He also talks about Islamophobia in Indian politics, the RSS, and New India.

He is 100% right when he says that a handful of Indian intellectuals are responsible for India's poor reputation in the west. It is about time the Lutyens Delhi crowd is challenged by unbiased indian intellectuals who can tell the world the truth.

But will Western media give platform for our Indic voices? That Mr.Babones will conveniently not talk about. Remember NYT gave an ad for recruitment of Indians who have Anti India stand for their news paper. They are that much thick skinned to give out such recruitment criteria openly and no one will call out their biases. This man also is good at turning Indians against Indians and he try to say that the Western media outlets are innocent.

@@vaniganapathi830 Thanks to Prof. Babones, many Indian or Indian origin media personalities, like Fareed Zakaria and Western media outlets are writing slightly positive articles about India, these days. The shift is negligible, but it is there. And I am sorry to say that I expect Indian intellectuals and opinion - makers, especially, JNU professors and others who are paid by the Indian taxpayers, to not peddle blatant lies and run India down at home and abroad, just because it suits their personal agendas.

@@vaniganapathi830 The leftist anti-Indian crowd have diligently worked on their English language skills for long. So they get hired more easily by western media agencies. Barring a few in South India, expressing views in the English language to cater to an international audience was never a priority for Indian nationalists. However, that is changing really fast. Hopefully, we will see better and more articulate speakers and thinkers writing the unbiased truth about India in the times to come.

(One is Right, whereas the other is Far Right) For example, people like : Arnab Goswami of Republic Channel V/s Pramod Muthalik chief of the Rashtriya Hindu Sena, the parent organisation of the Sri Ram Sene. Raithas like Goswamy supports the LGBTQ rights in India whereas, Traditionalists like Muthalik disowns and sharply objects to the rights of the LGBTQ community in India.

He is most likely a CIA agent from what I have studied him. 1) when he 1st came to India when Sardesai asked him something related to politics he said he din care much about politics and was a statistician who stumbled upon faults on Indias data on the indexes but a month later he is tweeting on kejriwal AAP, Rahul Gandhi. He started speaking on nuisances in Indian politics like any local would as if he's been studying Indian politics from a long time. 2) he's been a guest professor in China and Russia. His assignments seem to be extremely inclined with the countries America is interested in. The USA has a doctrine they always influence both sides like the left and the right. So that they control the narrative on both sides according to what they seek at a particular time. He could be a guy put in to infiltrate and shape the Indian right wing according to the US's needs. People need to keep a watch on him for any clues on this.

Dr. Babones is right when he says, Congress has neglected the growth of India, for decades. The BJP has developed that growth in the last ten years only and that tells alot about a party that wants to move forward. J. Michael, who are you fooling? No matter how much we may now criticize Nehru's policy of big dams based on the USA's Tennessee Valley Corporation, or the unwanted fallout of the US-led Green Revolution of the 60s, we have to acknowledge that Nehru's foresight helped India stop importing foodgrains, even as his good relations with USSR helped India build its state-run steel industry, hydel power, and nuclear power plants. And it was a Congress government at the Center that pushed thru the 73rd and 74th Amendments that created a third tier of governance at village, block and district levels. An earlier Congress government made participative district level planning a core strategy of its Planning Commission - which led to the Commission itself being abolished by the Modi government. This good professor should see some films that have been made on India's "Final Solution" to its "Muslim problem." Indoctrination by the RSS has helped communal Hindu formations run bloody pogroms against Muslims where the police stand by and do nothing. Christian churches and their priests and nuns have also been targeted for abuse and often torture, but tend to keep quiet about incidents as they work in remote areas with the most underprivileged former 'Outcaste' communities. But he must remember the case of Graham Staines, leprosy doctor serving remote tribal villages who was burnt to death along with his two small sons as they slept at night in their jeep. The right wing local political activist who incited this act was promptly made a minister of the BJP.

@@joyaroy8532 Yes, I understand, those early days and how Congress helped to build up India's infra structures in those early days. It's a stepping stone to all that is being developed in India today. India is a multi facet religious country with every conceivable ideology one can think of, so, religious turmoil will always be there, mostly among the illiterate masses that can be brainwashed to suit the politicians accordingly. Hindu/Muslim riots have been there, even before independance. (That's how the partition of India took place). Pakistan is not a country, it was created on a religious divide, but many Muslims, still choose to remain behind which was a mistake. They should have all been forced to leave. Hinduism is based on Ahimsa, which means, Non Violence. This was mercifully exploited by the Muslims. Islam is a forceful ideology and want all the world to be converted by any means. Christianity uses soft power and money. Hindus feel threatened and marginalized, so, fighting back, is quite normal. Islam and Christianity are the most violent of all other ideologies. Religions have killed and slaughtered more people, throughout history, than all the wars put together. Since, we are not programmed to think alike, we, get groups that force their beliefs on others, no matter how it's done. But, I will not condemn everyone, it's the hard core fanatics that go after the others and vis a vis. I need to be fair, because, I am human first. What I believe in, is personal. It's between me and God. I am not interested in what you believe in. Let God do the judging in the after life, that's His duty, not mine to judge my fellow men. Live and let live I know, it's a tall order, but hopefully, we will go on to the next level of wisdom and peace will reign among me. But, it will take more time, much more time. Meanwhile, the killings on every side, will carry on, in the name of all the gods.

We educated Indians have now become smarter and as rightly said by the learned professor, we have to solve our own problems and must keep working collectively on building a new world superpower within next 25 years. BJP government is doing a great job in this direction and we all as true nationalists must support our elected government in achieving that Indian dream of regaining our lost glory and honour in this world. All public opinion and a 360 degree analysis may well be done on this cast. Let there be a brutally honest objective assessment of his expositions. Once we do that , the spin put up by the global wokes that the Professor's views are biased will be exposed as vacuous. It is time we put our national counter narrative based on empirical bases and fought this engineered India bashing and Hinduphobia.

First time in my life I see India is heading in the right direction as a nation, its searching for its roots and trying to hold a tight grip to its soil, Hindus are realizing about the political traps and tricks played with them to keep them divided, separated from others, the depth of Muslim appeasement in the name of secularism. Modi is successfully able to turn wheels in the right direction and give it a momentum that it will drive itself. One more term of Modi which is bound to happen will change the scenario completely. And he has done it completely in the framework of the Indian constitution, law, processes, procedures, practices and conventions. He has never deviated or bypassed anything and hence none of his decisions which were challenged in the Supreme Court has gone against him, CAG also was not able to sight any irregularities during the audits. We are proud of our prime Minister Modi, finance minister Nirmalaji, EAM S Jaishankar, HM Amitji, Railway minister Ashwiniji, highway minister Nitinji, energy minister Piyushji. We are proud of all those who are manufacturing high-speed railways, satellites, vaccines, medicines, missiles. I am proud of being Indian, from a land of rich culture, knowledge, research, spiritual attainments, a land who is mother of music, vocal, dance, performing arts, plays, literature, sculptures, amazing architectures and civil engineering, amazing textiles and arts and crafts. This is a large, uphill battle and the diaspora must start getting involved to start changing these misperceptions of India. The good news is that many are now waking up to the gravity of the situation and are beginning to make their voices heard. As a result, I hope to see an more accurate coverage in American media in the coming years.

What exactly do you think these so called Indians think about India? I have multiple friends who are in usa, Canada, uk, one of them is doing mtech in Stanford and trust me, they are more anti Indian than some Pakistanis. They hate india, they openly told me they think India is a poor loser third world filthy country. Do you honestly believe they will work to make our image better in foreign nations??? 😂 If anything they do the opposite, they are most likely chatting with white people telling them what a sh*thole country it is, and they are so thankful they managed to escape it.

Dr, India and African countries are totally different in science and philosophy not only just because of IITs, rail roads or infra, but also because of the Hindu way of life that has shaped their thinking. They wish to live in content, of course it’s changing due to the influence of the foreign and Indian media with foreign agenda. India was a very developed country and unlike many other third world country, India’s wealth majorly concentrated around Hindu temples were plundered for centuries together by all the invaders including the English, annihilated its skill propagation, ridiculed its non materialistic, eco friendly way of agriculture and life in total. And using Nationalistic term in the western sense is not correct as Hinduism which believes in universal freedom for practice of religions and allowed all the religions under the sky to be practiced in India, peacefully and the Hinduism has called the entire world one family. Now that the foreign religions started creating serious harm to India, in all the ways, Hindus are just uniting and that too only to safeguard themselves, and not offend and form a govt which will protect the national identity of Hinduism and peaceful co existence. India is unlike America or Australia, where the invaders oppressed the aboriginal identity and claim to be democratic countries, where even now the natives are suffering in one form or the other, and the economies or social setup of those countries cannot be even compared as it is like robbers going into a house and start comparing them with other houses.

What an illuminating discussion. Good to see some vindication of my position from someone who has the merit to give it the necessary credence. I am a South Indian Christian also, like another person commenting here, and I have never experienced any discrimination worth speaking about. On the contrary, I am delighted that a party has inspired such a large majority in India to feel pride in their country and their roots. This pride and self worth are the fundamental building blocks for a productive, non corruptible, and socially conscious citizen. The harm our so called intellectuals are doing to vilify BJP is truly self destructive. As minorities, we have a duty to join hands with the benevolent majority and not portray ourselves to be the enemies of that majority. There is fabulous accommodation of minorities in India...no doubt about it in my mind. Let our legitimate opposition in India be free of identity politics! Let's examine and expose the policies and efficacy of our government based on policy failures.

These news portals and indexes are overwhelmingly negative and act as pressure institution and are direct threat bcs of massive softpower the western societies enjoy. Indian society having insecurity is not paranoia, nobody in india had cared if these indexes were from Congo( less impactful than us), indian insecurity comes from experience with massive waves of colonisation that society has suffered and these institutions are form of neo colonialism.

Having said that, let's not be so slavish as to think every word coming out of a Gori chamdi is wisdom. In this present context itself, mr. Babones constantly harps on how it's the Indian intellectuals who are responsible for the western narrative on India. He should be asked why is it that rana ayyub was invited for unesco event? Particularly, since she has shown herself to be imbalanced and called out by another panelist. How is it that the western media constantly finds only persons with a particular ideological leanings within India? Are we to truly belive that such huge media corporates don't have knowledgeable people who actually bother to go and learn about a nation's politics as hugely impactful as India? That they'd bother to read up on the political spectrum on India and provide a fair representation? Babones wants you to believe that and you are sucker if you are falling for it. Just imagine how prima facie dishonest he is being!!

@@MaTara01BTW It (the 10rs note bit) wasn't entertainig as much as patronising and what really set of ranga sir, as i said earlier. But this isn't the focus of the point I was making which is that west isn't duped like a naive kid as babones seems to be suggesting. They have a particular agenda which pushes those narratives which serve their geo-political interests and the bjp government is not.

He is right, we should hire Ivy League (NRI or international) professors to deliver correctly analyzed, unbiased and the actual scenarios/situations about India… Along with it, a few bashings by our EAM Dr.Jai Shankar … Sone pe suhaga or icing on the cake…
