Loving your videos and seen a few of them now. I've been looking at a lot of "boaty vids" during lockdown, ranging from billionaires "ships" to luxury sail boats that need a crew to sail the thing....but your little boat is my favourite! You are proof you don't need to spend crazy money to sail the Atlantic or even around the world. You keep everything simple and able to do your own running repairs when needed. I also like your calm style of presentation. Keep on roving with Wave Rover!

I have a lot of experience doing sail repairs, on windsurf and catamaran sails. It looks like your sail, only needed to be re stitched. I can tell, the sail is in good condition. Use the existing holes, where the thread has come out. You should use, UV thread. I never heard of using contact cement, it should probably get hard, so shouldn't adhere for long, especially if you first didn't clean the sail. You should use special sail tape, if you want, tho isn't necessary.

Just found your channel and subscribed. Very nicely done. Great repair on the jib. Having used contact adhesive all my working life, including gluing 'mohire' rubstrips on aircraft parts exposed to the slipstream, I'm sure it will give you good service at least on the repaired section. (even repair my clothes with it). As a solo sailor would it not be worth upgrading to a furled genoa. A lot safer than being out front fighting with a gib in bad weather

Excellent comments. I went with hanked on foresails for their simplicity and for budget reasons. I now have 3 different head sails. A light weather drifter, a reefable jib, and a storm jib. This gives me terrific flexibility. I'm very cautious going forward and always tie off.

Just a Q not a criticism...Why not an automatic electric bulge pump that turns on in the presence of water? I understand it’s a drain on batteries/fuel but it’s a safety feature that can alert you to a problem while sleeping, save your boat while you’re away on shore as well as make your life easier. Thanks for the video. I enjoy your channel very much.

  • @tartansailor

For the jib to get damaged aloft, it may be because the fairleads are to far aft, you may want to bring it forward to tighten the leech. My experience is that you did most of the bad weather areas on the north Atlantic. The rest of your trip should be calmer. For that reason a 110% genoa may be a better option than a new jib. Also, if you could get a whisker pole for the trade winds sailing, it would help you quite a bit.

Martin Schulman Most with hank on sails carry a smaller jib (me included). But that creates a situation where one may be attempting to change a head sail in not the best conditions. That said, it is possible to have a sail maker add reef points to a jib much like a mainsail, effectively lessening the size of the jib.

You have the high end sailmakers who work for top sailors, events and expensive racing boars or sailing yachts and … you have all the others who don't know the trade. I'm talking of experience : several times several sail makers were totally unable to make repairs on a perfect working sail for my sailing cruiser… even after I explicitly told them wha t I expected and drawing the design of the repair expected (something which would have been an insult 30 years ago !).
