It's bad enough some toilets can be seen from the kitchen but at least some of THOSE have glass and walls between the toilet and the kitchen. This is certainly not a place to have visitors in. I would NOT want to have my visitors using the toilet in my kitchen. The ONLY plus (or negative) would be that you would know if your visitors washed their hands. Or not 🤢🥵😵‍💫

HAHA. This makes the last one look good. You get a curtain for your glass door in the shower, but nothing for the toilet!. Not even a partial dividing wall. Having a bed, with under storage, would make this workable. Folding table and using the bed as a seat. Sheet of wood, plastic, cardboard, something for a barrier between toilet and kitchen.

A big giant no for this apartment, but now we all want a Spiderman tape measure.

My single requirement of a small space is for the toilet to be separate from the other rooms in some shape, way, or form. Wet toilets, where the shower is just on top, aren't ideal but would be preferral to this.

That toilet is giving me second-hand embarrassment.

LOL ! 😂 Usui San look at the bright side, you don’t need a chair and table. If you cover the sink with a large wooden cutting board it becomes a table. Then you can sit on the toilet to do your work too ! Two in one ! 🤭😅 I think you current apartment is perfect. If you were to replace your current bed with a bunk bed you’ll free the space in front of the kitchenette.

They could install a painted MDF (wood) or plaster divider. One idea would be a "table" that you can fit on top of when you're not using it to disguise haha

as a european, i find it very difficult to imagine living in such a small space. my hobby room alone is as big as some of the apartments shown here. my respect to all those who can do that.

Oh no! That's a huge no from me. Unless I was fearing imminent homelessness and had a very thick curtain to close the toilet off from the rest of the room. Or use the toilet as an office chair? "Please take off your street shoes and put on these slippers while I poop next to where I cook". Usui-san you always find some interesting homes.

Yikes! Usui-san! This one is -I don’t even have words! The only thing that makes it slightly better than episode 3, is that the toilet isn’t the first thing you see! It’s very pretty, nice floors and plenty of light; absolutely no storage though. Also, there’s no where to sit. Perhaps you could get a very small desk on wheels to move it in front of the toilet to sit there when you work. 😂😅 Thank you for another great showing though!

Its actually concerning that whoever designed this layout actually thought this could be a living option. I mean i wish they would just add a wall to divide and cover the toilet at least! But well. I mean worst comes to worst i would still not consider this as a living space but well if we actually talk about making it work then i suppose the renter could add some sort of dividing space not just for privacy but to stop spreading of germs into your food!!

Nope, no way. The toilet placement is too much for me. Thank you so much Usui-san for showing us the length and width of the room. It gives a better idea about furniture placement, if any furniture could be placed at all. Great video, funny too❤❤❤

Yikes! This apartment gets a no from me. It was an interesting design choice to put the toilet in the open next to the kitchenette. 😅 It would not have taken much to enclose it and add a bi-fold door. I agree with the choice of a bed with under-bed storage for this room, or otherwise a loft-bed so a desk and storage could be added underneath would be another option to make the most of the space. Thank you for sharing your journey, Usui-San. These videos are enjoyable. Even my 9 year old child loves seeing all the rooms and what Spidey might do. 😃

Yes, take Spiderman and run! Compared to living on the street or with people that are not nice, this apartement is better, but otherwise.... 🙀 Pity they didn't combine the shower and the toilet into a small closed "unit": to get the toilet away from the main room would have made a big difference!

This is definitely a no for me. I want to know who thought it was ok to put the toilet right by the entrance. No privacy at all. I would have turned right around and left. This is too narrow. I still like the Spiderman tape measure! 😊

I have a question for Usui-san: Please tell us your criteria for a micro apartment. How big is a micro? Also, what details are most important to you in your search? It would be interesting if you made a video about this. Actually, ever since lockdown, I have had a little habit of looking at Japanese apartments and houses. It's quite interesting. I've watched videos of some very nice 1K (one room with kitchen) apartments in the Tokyo area; some of these are reasonably priced but the buildings may be slightly older (10 or 20 years) than the ones you show us. Is a 1K is not a micro? Are you only interested in new builds?

I wouldn’t pay $39.00 for that apartment let alone $390.00! 😳

Another crazy way to prioritice space... but one plus - there are place for toiletpaper... in the bath :D Who will have a toilet in a room where you make food, live and sleeps?

Please don't Usui! That toilet is just wrong! But if you are faced with a similar living space you can get a drop-down table/desk that mounts on the wall from IKEA (Norberg is one) and sit on the bed if you need to. Take care! Thank you for sharing your life with us! ❤

TBH I really like this place! Just get a small fridge and put a microwave on top, kitchen is sorted. A mattress on the floor is comfy bed. That clothes line for drying clothes makes a perfect wardrobe too. It will probably be best to have a laptop instead of a PC, just to save space. All in all, very cozy. Maybe don't have friends come to visit unless you are very comfortable with each other.

Watching these videos makes me wonder: how do you have friends over to visit? What is the price difference between micro apartments and something normal? Is privacy not important any more or personal dignity? To be honest, an open toilet like this I find insulting on the part of the Landlord

Let’s look at the positives: two windows for more light. Given that there’s only one sink, it makes sense to put it near the toilet, although everyone has commented on the weird juxtaposition. Well, you could always put a screen btw the toilet and the ‘kitchen.’ It does fit the criteria for a micro apartment, however . Btw Usui, we love the camelias and your strolls through Tokyo. More, please!

I agree. They didn't have to install a toilet with a sink attached because there's a sink right next to the toilet. I don't see how this can be legal.

There is an apartment for everyone surely there is. This one with a few tweaks would be excellent For a walker/wheelchair person with IBS, or perhaps fear of pollution from outside sources. So walked in the door begin your clean routine. No problem with the stupid walls and doors to the toilet get that part finished ✅ hand washing hand washing. Switch the electric cooktop for gas because it’s prettier. And of course you have everything else in the apartment already turned on and fully functioning because it’s completely computerized with back up back ups and perfectly sterilized and clean and the artificial walking system can be put to the side before the step and the system you now have installed can take over you don’t need much room on the other side of the step because everything is completely planned and function smoothly/mechanically. And it’s a very quiet apartment due to the extremely thick walls. You’re lucky you don’t have to pay extra for those extremely thick walls!🎉

I like see through umbrella’s can see more, but I have a fabric umbrella, one with many colours and one in white with teal polkadots. I use the white one when I know I walk out in the dark so cars can see me easier. No, not the toilet next to kitchen! I don’t doubt people do their best to keep it clean but at least have a separate space with a door. Or thick curtain as a door (still separate space!) for minimum. I don’t want to live here. Also shower goes to genkan area. So you shower and then you dry … you step with your just cleaned feet into the genkan. I mean I know and am sure people clean the genkan with soapy water from time to time, but still… Bad house, I mean it is still better than living on the street probably, warm and dry, but setup is so bad. I think for lack of better options I would place a bonus shower curtain on a rod that holds between the walls so the toilet splash doesn’t get into the sink / kitchen. Still this is far from ideal. It is annoying too that the AC is over the toilet…

This apartment should be kept available for someone with intestinal troubles. The ability to have a hot drink. To have more room, sunlight, watch a bigger screen than a laptop.... Perfect for someone who would love that. In fact it is a gem because most places do have a door on the toilet area. See? You are altruistic to leave it for someone who needs it. (This is part a joke, and part the truth.)

This is the first place that doesn't really seem liveable. Never mind the toilet placement; it's just too small with no storage for anything!

Well... the toilet really sours the deal here. There's a reason we call it the outhouse. It needs walls and ventilation 😅 Would not rent this for more than 200€ a month if I was forced to live in the area during the week because of work.

That should be illegal, that's crazy. I hope no one rents this. That's a cell.

Oh boy... I don't know where to start, but it would also end right there... No seperate room for the toilet and shower is not justifiable. Almost no space and this high rent... That is not ideal.

After watching all of your videos, I have an idea for you. I think you should have a small contest for your viewers where they chooses one of the spaces you have shared and redesign it into a space they think you would like to live. You share each space’s dimensions with us and show us the layout, so I think we have enough information. You might want to have some design rules or could let people’s imagination run wild. It could be as simple as a detailed list, a photo of a drawing done by hand on graph paper or something more complex, as long as it can be sent to you in an email. I would be interested in what people would suggest because the comments are so interesting to read. I like looking at the spaces and envisioning what they would look like with better designs.

I feel like they could at least have put up a perspex divider screen between the sink and the toilet to make it a little more discreet. maybe 1.7 meters to provide a visual barrier but not affect the air flow from the heating unit especially as that area has it's own light. I do like that it has lots of windows so you can get some air and also on a less rainy day some natural light.

You can use the toilet as a kitchen stool to eat on. Or sit on the floor and eat on the toilet lid.

The price is pretty high for this apt, however there's rust line in the shower's curtain hooks. By the way, cool measurement tape key chain w/ spiderman.

The rent is pushing it, but if you get a plastic cup and sit on the toilet while drinking tap water you can make an infinite circuit. You can also pull the fire alarm and smack people coming down the stairs since your front door opens outwards into their stairs. The entire room feels like a prank, but it's doable if you slept in front of the kitchen sink with your feet by the toilet and had a work desk where you put the bed. Definitely not an ideal apartment, however.

*One little earthquake and and toilet rolls would land in wet sink. *Dark night return, the step up is a triping hazzard. *Toilet in open next kitchen is horrible and unsanitary. *No frigerator unsafe food storage. *No real clothes storage. No good apartment. Keeping looking Usui. I will keeping watching your videos. Hello Spiderman...

It really feels like whoever designed this wasn't even trying. Honestly the shower next to the kitchen would have been better and put the toilet in the little room.
