ABOUT US
Welcome to Grand Adventure, a KZread channel that focuses on RV-centric outdoor activities including not only of course camping, but also mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, skiing and more, always filmed in stunning 4K.
We're based in Salt Lake City, Utah during the winter months, and invite you to come along as we travel all around the U.S. My wife Patricia and I, and dog Zoe are avid boondockers, so while you'll occasionally find us in RV parks or even dry campgrounds, we're usually camped in some of the most remote and beautiful spots that you could ever pull a travel trailer into. We've now transitioned from "long-timing" for six months a year, to living and traveling in our RV full-time.
We'll provide beautiful travel videos, as well as some tips and insight on trip planning, and equipping and maintaining your RV to make your next adventure a grand one indeed! So, subscribe to make sure that you catch every episode, and remember...life is nothing but a Grand Adventure!

Great Basin is by far my favorite national park. Not a lot of people and the campsites are a good distance away from each other. A lot more elbow room. Plus, the best campground is above 10,000 feet. That means temps of 60 - 80 degrees during the day. A great escape from the 110+ degrees in Las Vegas.

That's a great spot, Jim. Homie and I drove up Route 6 to check out the Ward Mountain Campground. We continued on up onto a shoulder of Ward Mountain, negotiating a white-knuckle Jeep trail to top out for that view of Ely seen in the video. What you didn't see was my unsuccessful attempt to get back into the truck and close the door in the 70 mph winds we encountered up there. I actually had to go around to the other side, get back in via the back door and climb over the center console to get into the driver's seat. 😅 Homie filmed that, it'll probably end up in some blooper reel someday.

Me and a friend drove from Las Vegas to wheeler peak in the 70's. It was not a national park at that time .We camped there and the next day toured the caves. We were the only ones on the tour and it cost us 50 cents each . Times sure have changed.

This was really cool! I was this close to being able to ride one of these trains in Silverton, CO and ultimately did not do it so to have first front row view is pretty darn cool. Just from this video I think Nevada has a New Mexico sort of vibe in terms of climate and flora. Hmm you mentioned Kennekot. Aren't they that giant mine just south of Provo somewhere? Looks like they have been operating in business for a long long time.

We've ridden and filmed the Durango & Silverton Railroad, too, back in 2019: kzread.info/dash/bejne/h6tkmpmslbnXj9I.html Nevada and New Mexico are quite different, actually, at least from our perspective. For one thing, New Mexico has that Spanish flavor that Nevada doesn't. For another, the climate in Nevada seems to be more diverse, perhaps due to a little greater elevation range, but also because northern Nevada has a much higher latitude than New Mexico reaches. The unique Basin & Range ecosystem encompasses nearly all of Nevada, whereas southern New Mexico is actually part of the Chihuahuan Desert - which itself has its own look. Kennecott's operations that you refer to encompass the entire Oquirrh Mountain range that marks the western boundary of the Salt Lake Valley, separating it from the Tooele Valley. So it's actually not south of Provo but almost assuredly the mine that you're referring to, one of the largest open-pit copper mines in the world, where they've been extracting copper and other precious minerals since 1898. Kennecott Utah Copper moved into Ely in the 1970s, although Ely's first copper boom began in 1902. So yes, those two mining operations are roughly the same age.

If you think Cave lake has water, you better call ahead first. The state was rebuilding the dam at the lake and it was drained for construction when we camped there in 2022-2023 with lots of construction equipment sounds to spoil the peace.

Great presentation, Marc. This is perhaps one of the most historic areas you have presented to date, given the size and number of preserved and functioning remnants. The railroad ride was fabulous. I doubt anything has significantly changed over the past two hundred years. And no doubt many the bristle cone pines still exist as they did 200 years ago. These remote areas in Nevada are like stepping back in time. I can see why you wanted to visit this area. What's the deal with forest fires this year? Last year is was a problem as you headed west. If you get a chance - check out the utility trailer build I finished a while back that has 1,400 watts of solar, a 272 amp, 48 volt lithium battery I built & a lift bed. The mini split really helps to reduce my energy usage and the Chinese diesel heater is great in the cooler weather. Thanks again for your great channel. youtube.com/@coachgym
